Welcome Hippywitch flowers. Sounds like you are a very thoughtful MIL. Plenty to read here on that subject!

Hello all newbies and welcome. Just popping by to say 1) we were all newbies once so don't feel shy about joining in 2) have a look at the panto threads and if you feel mad enough, please join in. The more the merrier!

I have been looking at GN for a while now so I joined. Somebody asked me if I would like to be known as Jessie or JLT. Jessie is fine as JLT makes me feel like a wilted takeaway sandwich grin.

I don't care for politics but I do enjoy a good debate without taking things too seriously.

I have 2 GC who I am lucky enough to see often and I am divorced but still good friends with ex husband who I often share grandparenting with.

I live in Scotland so if I post some colloquial phrases that you don't understand, just ask and I will do my best to interpret.

shysal Thu 29-Sept-16 21:35:51

Hello Jessie, welcome flowers. There are lots of Scottish members on here. They do occasionly have to translate! I am a coward and avoid politics or religion on the threads smile.

Another newbie here, popping over from Mumsnet which is a great place to read up on DIL's bugbears (I've learned a lot!)

In answer to how not to offend future DIL, I reckon being considerate, uncritical, caring and fair, not giving advice unless asked for and following any rules for looking after DGC to the letter, no matter how ridiculous you might think they are, are good starting points. If DIL wants DGC patted exactly 4 times on the back after 3 mouthfuls of puree and then massaged with goose fat for 32 minutes, bite your lip and crack on. And remembering that new parents are vulnerable and often unsure of themselves and might need TLC in the first few months while they get to grips with thing. It's flipping difficult to navigate this whole MIL thing at times I've discovered.

Am looking forward to checking out some of the threads on here.

I think it is time our shysal started calling herself not so shysal anymore. wink

She is making a very good job as our main meeter and greeter.
Welcome to all newcomers.

Thanks Nellie. I only do it because I know how awkward it feels to be ignored when entering a room full of strangers!smile

Gran or Grandad? Tell us about yourself and welcome smile

Maggiebee46 Sat 08-Oct-16 11:20:06

I have 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons and will answer to anything as long as it's polite! Mostly I'm Gran but some have taken to calling me Granny now they are older! Great Gran to the next generation but they may come up with something more imaginative as they get older. One grandson had a Nana and called his great grandmother Sweetie Nana as she always had sweets to share. Whatever you are called makes no difference to the loving relationship you have with your grandchildren.

shysal Sat 08-Oct-16 11:27:53

Welcome Maggiebee46 flowers. I was thinking 46 would be your age and what a young grandmother you would have been. I then realized that it could be the year of your birth, the same as mine. Have you had your 70th birthday yet and how did or will you celebrate?

nanatobe Sat 08-Oct-16 13:14:26

I've been lurking on GN reading all posts with interest and loving the varied views. My DD is due to give birth to my first GC in December and I'm so looking forward to it. I also remarried this year and have a step GS who is almost a year old, I confess to not being as excited at his birth as I am my own daughters (although he is a lovely little chap), lots of family dynamics to manage there! I'm sure I'll need some words of wisdom from all you experts once baby arrives. Hi everyone.

Wobblybits Sat 08-Oct-16 13:51:05

Welcome to all the new Granmas and (hopefully) Granddads. Hope you enjoy Gn, it is fun most of the time.

shysal Sat 08-Oct-16 17:14:43

Hi and welcome nanatobe flowers. Nice that you think we are all wise experts! I wish I was! I just muddled along and went with my instincts. Enjoy your DD's baby, you have lots of fun ahead.

nanatobe Sat 08-Oct-16 18:15:40

Thank you shysal. I'm looking forward to it but already find myself saying 'in my day we didn't do it that way'. I must stop myself doing that ???

thebinlady Tue 11-Oct-16 15:01:45

Hello. I'm a Mumsnet lurker that has just discovered Gransnet. Seeing as how I am a grandmother I've decided to join up here because while Mumsnet is illuminating in sooooo many ways I feel like you lot are more likely to be my people :-)

CardiffJaguar Tue 11-Oct-16 16:40:20

Just joined after checking that as a non-grandparent (and no chance of being one) I was eligible. Only 80, which is the new 60, there is plenty to do. My passion is cars which fortunately my wife enjoys too, and Jaguar leads the field. Apart from that chess has been a major interest and with the internet availability of playing I usually have 20 games ongoing. What with that and a lot of computing my wife is often glad to get me out in the car. But I can be a wild Jaguar at times!

shysal Tue 11-Oct-16 17:18:48

Hello thebinlady, welcome flowers. I don't know how anyone finds the time to read all that goes on in 'the other place'. I waste spend too much time on GN!

Also welcome to CardiffJaguar. New men are especially needed! My father's initials were JAG and he always wanted a car to fit them, which he eventually managed. I have a photo of him beside his Jag parked in the gateway of a stately home! I know almost nothing about cars, but do love to watch 'Car SOS' on TV.

Hello people, good to read about ladies at same stage in life, the sandwich generation, squashed between them that you once were and those you are rapidly turning into!

shysal Wed 12-Oct-16 08:50:34

Hello Menopaws, welcome flowers. Hope you will enjoy Gransnet.

Rigby46 Thu 13-Oct-16 13:46:33

Hello - new member but long time lurks. I live in the South East and have 2 dgc. Will be joining in political threads for sure

Judthepud2 Fri 14-Oct-16 00:13:13

Recommend you wear a helmet and chain mail then Rigby ? The political threads are not for the faint hearted (like me)!!
