A lovely lady I knew took her (ex-naval captain) husband, who had dementia, to USA to visit friends/family for one last time. Before settling down for a sleep on the flight he told her he was just going up to the bridge for a smoke!
She used to carry cards with her printed with the message that her husband had dementia and to please excuse his (sometimes) erratic behaviour. For example, if there was difficulty in a shop or restaurant she was able to pass a card to the staff without making a big deal about it
