A lovely lady I knew took her (ex-naval captain) husband, who had dementia, to USA to visit friends/family for one last time. Before settling down for a sleep on the flight he told her he was just going up to the bridge for a smoke! She used to carry cards with her printed with the message that her husband had dementia and to please excuse his (sometimes) erratic behaviour. For example, if there was difficulty in a shop or restaurant she was able to pass a card to the staff without making a big deal about it

Oh just had another thought ann. Someone else I knew had had to take over all finances but her husband (with dementia) would get agitated if he didn't have his wallet when they went out. She would make sure he had said wallet with only a £5 note in it so he could 'pay' for meals with friends etc. He was happy and she didn't worry if it got lost.

DH has had a fairly good couple of days (quietly optimistic ) Although admittedly he was too slow taking his diuretics this morning and didn't feel he could manage his Philosophy class, but took us out to Brasserie Blanc for a lateish lunch instead
He has not disappeared off to bed at 8 o clock either, let's see if he can keep this up until the next blood test on Thursday!

I am in full house cleaning mode today (well, I was before I came on here!) having spent too long in the garden this week, the place looks like a tip and our friend is coming to lunch tomorrow. We haven't seen her in a while. Today is a bit of a sad day too as the company that DD worked for has closed down, the directors having retired, and she is now having to look for another job. The difficulty is that she has worked for this company since leaving university twenty five years ago (she was, at one stage, a junior director) so she hasn't a lot of other work experience. She loved the job, they made her too comfortable, paid her well and latterly their offices were just down the road from where she lived, so very handy. She has never had an interview, even for her current job, so it's all pretty new in the real world. She has another interview this afternoon, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will go well. Even if she isn't successful, the experience will be invaluable. The only advice I have given her is to eat something before she goes! I interviewed someone once whose stomach was growling all through the session and she was so embarrassed, poor thing. Well, this will not get the bairn a new coat, as they say! I'd better get on. Where's me duster??

soop, don't despair of seeing Bracken again. My DiL's cat vanished and wasn't heard of for five weeks. Then, someone who had seen one of her flyers phoned to say that she thought the cat was in her garden. That was a few years ago and the said cat has kept very close to home ever since!

We will go by train anno a direct service from Stockport to Cleethorpes where our friend will pick us up and take us to their home for lunch and later to the Premier Inn. Good service all the way ?

I am helping on an Alzheimer's Carers Information and Support Programme for the next four weeks and I am always amazed by the way ordinary people cope in these circumstances - that's why I volunteer to do it. One of our sessions is about how looking after the Carer is important to enable them to continue their caring role. I am so chuffed that you are giving yourself a change of scene.

GD, your daughter must be very daunted by this change in circumstances but I'm sure you will be there to offer whatever support she needs.

I'm really excited. I've just had a call to say that my wood carving is arriving tomorrow - yippee!! DH commissioned it for my birthday from our (once a year) gardener. We talked through what I would like but, apart form saying that I fancied something sort of like a tree, we left it up to her. She is quite spiritual and likes to 'find' what is inside the piece of wood she is using. Apparently mine became 'Seeker of Wisdom' - I can't wait!!! Photos will follow.

I might just as well have bought the suite anno I could probably have bought a ( very small decrepit) house for the total cost.

anno Bracken lived in the forest when we first encountered her. She was about six months old. She, together with her sister and mother, were very difficult to capture prior to a trip to the vet in Campbeltown. When she was released back into the forest, the threesome took the familiar path they shared. We have no close neighbours. Her meals were provided for her on a daily basis. She had a close bond with her father, Rory, and would sit on a branch in the woodland and wait for his appearance on the doorstep. They were happy to spend time together. After almost a fortnight, we do fear the worst. It's a sad fact of life.

The garden calls. I am beginning to see the light of day. The hard slog is paying dividends. We've left a message with the local hunk man to contact us regarding the digging of the trench to take the water away before it reaches our fence and swamps our footpath. Funny how much more optimistic I feel. To date, MacS has insisted that we do not need help. The bump on his head has made him see sense.

We certainly are having fun. We're lucky to have found perfect accommodation and the area is truly beautiful.

Don't worry Maw , our little donkey ( called Wonky ... obviously ) will stay in the shelter as he is a therapy donkey in his spare time ! We just get to pay for his carrots !
