Pet Peeves

I live near a playing field and small park and it bothers me that so many children seem to scream mindlessly when running around happily. I find myself looking out in case somebody needs help! When I was young, I was taught not to scream when playing in case I was ignored later if I needed help....does this sound old trouty?

Neighbours who insist on putting out their rubbish bags the night before the binmen are due to collect them. The foxes/cats have a really good time in splitting open the bags and scattering the contents all over the pavements etc., Guess who cleans up the mess in the morning.

Alison that reminds me of the fable about crying wolf. I used to think it was only little girls who screamed but was recently told that little boys do it too. Don't think they did when mine were young.

Alison333, I quite agree with you. My children were taught, as I was, not to scream unless they really meant it, and they managed to play perfectly well without screaming!

People pushing proms and pushchairs or holding little ones whilst on their phone. Talk to your child for gods sake! How do you expect them to learn to communicate otherwise.

I'd also like to defend the use of chewing gum. I suffer from tension and I find that chewing gum helps to stop my jaw from freezing up.

I have two, both related to public transport and mobile phones

The first is the person who conducts a very loud and one sided conversation on their phone for the entire journey treating us all to the minutiae of their lives. today we heard what they had for breakfast, the text they had from an acquaintance, the row they had had with someone in the street and so on, and so on. All with colourful language used as punctuation.

The second is the young man sat next to me on the bus. I slowly came to realise that he was flicking through soft porn pictures on his phone. Young ladies in a state of undress and hip damaging poses. When I told my OH later he suggested that I should have leaned across and whispered in the young man's ear, W****R. Such a wag my OH.

Oldandverygrey, unfortunately we have to put out our bags and refuse boxes the night before collection, as the bin men arrive between 6.30 and 6.45 am. We are not up at that time, so, sorry.

It could easily be next Monday before my list ends. Children screaming in gardens (usually girls), people speaking loudly on mobikes in public places and my latest people taking photos/videos capturing my DGD in them without permission. Try telling them it's illegal like you are speaking alien.

That's ok Auntieflo, our bags have to be put out by 6.30am, guess not everyone gets up as early as me!

People that either don’t replace the toilet roll and those that put it on the wrong wayyyy

Dog walkers who use extending leads instead of training their dogs properly. They often seem oblivious to the fact that the dog has just s**t on my drive.

Talking in the cinema whilst I am trying to follow the film.

I have a dry mouth due to a medical condition so I use chewing gum at times to keep my mouth moist. Also we put our bags and bins out the night before because of early collection. Also cycle on the pavement (as I did today down the High Street) as drivers have a habit of stopping and opening their car doors without looking. I have to put up with the dozen of kids on scooters and skateboards on the pavement so they can put up with me. Rant over.

My pet hate, doggy poo left in plastic bags hanging from trees.

My DH who says “could you just...................” and expects me to drop everything and ‘do’............or maybe he assumes I have no life if my own and I’m just waiting for his request!

Squiffy and Aunty Flo I too wondered if it was peeves about pets! There awesome things I know I ought to be peeved about or perhaps more strict about regarding my pets, I mean, they do rather take the advantage of me and do naughty things they know are supposed to be against the rules.... Unfortunately the older I get the softer I get. Pancho gets to do his little sneaky cuddle routine three time every morning now for example which does hold things up a bit.. Maybe that is for another thread! My pet peeves. Oh dear. The older I get the more crabbier I get too!!

jangly things in gardens (Wind chimes? - huh! they don't chime with me)
Booming cars
Roaring motor bikes
people who enter a room and start shouting to all and sundry
people who have every noisy machine invented and whirr them into screaming motion every Saturday and Sunday at about 8 am
People playing their loud "music" (boomy stuff) outdoors and at night.
The loud booming noise of the Father Christmas lorry (which used to play actual beautiful choir-sung carols) belting out pop Christmas ghastly repertoire to collect money round our streets from October onwards.
Loud-talking women on public transport trying to impress
Mobile phone shouters - especially in trains
People rustling newspaper
Chewing loudly
chewing (I can hardly say it) with their mouth yuk yuk open yuk
snoring, the explosion noise type. OK it's medical..
clicking pens
screaming girls. Why do they? We never did. Mine didn't. We'd have been told off and told we sounded like "a common little oik" or words to that effect. My dear Dad would have simply said, "Don't you have any pride in yourself?'

Smells:
Barbie queues (I know - family name) absolute desecration of the beautiful English peaceful Summer evening.
Men's aftershave
The weird smell of men on pillows people don't wash when you visit them.
Cigarrettes - anywhere and on people who have just smoked them
Other types of smoking
Coconut - OK it's the latest health fad but I am allergic to it and it makes me seriously sick even the smell

people who point out that the rest of us are wrong
People who spoil the fun by pointing out every one's mistakes such as that this should be "on the “Moaning" thread"
People who sit smugly on the moral high ground denouncing the fun everyone is having e.g. as we chat amicably about their pet peeves, because being a superior being, they rise above such things. That is, they do not stoop to having pet peeves.
In short my biggest pet peeve is people who upset others, like to hurt them and putting them down or who spoil a bit of harmless and happy fun shared between friends! I grew up with such a "cold water" and "moral high ground" person. She had all the put-downs in the book at the tip of her tongue so that just when I and my playmates (younger than she) were enjoying a game together she could kill our fun with a weighty and superior put-down.. Eugh! Spoilsports!

Forgot to say; regarding chewing gum. I am ambivalent. I do chew. I too have a dry mouth - tablets I'm on cause it. When I was learning the trumpet I was told trumpet players chew to strengthen their jaws! No idea if it is true but I used the excuse. However, I hate seeing people walking about or generally in public chewing. I agree, that gormless cow-like stupid chewing face is simply not polite! So I don't chew in public or at least not when anyone might see.

Neighbours who are too busy to even say Good Morning to you, and avoid you like the plague as they assume because you are old that you will be pestering them BUT the same people expect you to take in all their parcels for them as they know you are home most days. I have delivery drivers nearly kicking down my front door because they have been TOLD to knock at my door.
