Joanna Lumley on hair and other things

I love it when JL tells us she does her own hair most of the time, cutting and home colouring, as I do. Saves a fortune, And whats more she enjoys it .. correcting a colour that goes wrong is part of the fun. Shes older than me so makes me feel I can continue this way for many years to come. I do go to the hairdressers a couple of times a year to correct a faulty fringe when required. At least once a year I decide I can cut a good fringe and whats more I suit it. (I don’t). Takes ages to rectify. You’d think I’d have learnt my lesson by now but something comes over me.. a photo of the late Jane Birkin or her daughters perhaps is a sure fire trigger….
Any thoughts? ..

I have embraced my grey/white hair with pride. Besides, I think one’s complexion changes with age, and hair colour matches it. I would never ever dye it.

I’ll probably get shot down but I always think her hair looks a bit of a mess.

Joanna Lumley has truly awful hair, only surpassed by Camilla’s.

Kandinsky Sat 02-Aug-25 20:46:31

I will never ‘embrace the grey’ - it adds 10+ years on any woman.
I love Joanna Lumley & think she’s still beautiful. ( & she was brilliant in absolutely fabulous )

Camilla's is a darn sight better than Joanna's!
I do like them both, however.

I cut my fringe and DH cut my hair once during lockdown but no, I prefer going to a professional and don't colour it.

I like the fun element of playing with hair colour. Even if it’s only withsubtle choices between shades of mid blonde. light brown whatever there’s still something creative about it all that I enjoy.

Joanna Lumley has a striking face and a striking personality so she can get away with messy hair. I cut my fringe once and it was dreadful; never again. As long as I can afford it I will have my hair cut and coloured (grey with highlights) professionally.

Joanna Lumley is a beautiful woman, she looks after herself, so her hair being a bit wild looks good, as the rest of her is very well groomed. The average woman would look like a bag lady with hair like hers though, so it’s not a look to be embraced I don’t think. I’d never cut my own hair, but I have coloured it myself in the past, I did in lockdown - was I ever glad when hairdressers reopened!

Joanna Lumley in my eyes can do no wrong ,I think she is sophisticated, funny, elegant and just somebody I admire so much.
She could be completely bald, and I would still love the woman
(Or at least be very fond of her 😁)

Kate1949 Sun 03-Aug-25 10:32:52

Well I am completely bald (alopecia). I would give anything for Joanna's hair, or anyone else's for that matter.

I think Camilla’s hair is just fine, feminine but not too silly as befits her status.

Princess Anne’s Hair style is horrendous in my opinion but it is her unique trademark as a Royal born princess.

Not every older female wants to morph into either one of my sixties dollys -as in all curly perm, stiffened with spray, or a Judy Dench.
Not every female actually cares all that much and JL is certainly as photogenic as ever!

Camilla's hair looks like candy floss. The late Queen had such a dignified and classic style. I miss her so much.

I love watching anything with Joanna Lumley in it. Her comedy roles are brilliant and she steals every scene. I also like her travelogues and her fashion style inspires me.
Her hairstyle always suits her fab bone structure.

She can be a bit over gushy but I’ll forgive her that.

Granmarderby10 Sun 03-Aug-25 10:45:21

I disagree that grey hair or in my case majority white hair necessarily ages a woman. I Had very dark brown hair but am very very pale skinned with just a few freckles but now compared to my white hair my face looks more alive or at least less “day old corps” …sorry

A couple of times a year I get the urge to grow my hair long and put it up in one of those whispy arrangements. I must resist it as it makes me look like a horse!

I agree and tho she used to be an attractive woman was never beautiful, few people are in reality.

Has anyone slapped a rosette on your barnet?😁

JaneJudge Sun 03-Aug-25 13:28:52

I don't understand the difference between being beautiful and/or attractive

I remember my family saying tall women couldn't be pretty confused they could be attractive but not pretty, what is the reasoning behind this?

I thought this thread would be about female hair loss btw

merlotgran Sun 03-Aug-25 13:32:37

I thought this thread would be about female hair loss btw

Why? It’s not mentioned in the OP and Joanna Lumley doesn’t appear to suffer from hair loss.

Yes, I agree. that dying your grey hair too dark is equally aging, but a nice warm blonde or chestnut brown ( I personally think ) is less aging.

Because it's something that isn't really talked about and I thought it would be about something deeper when I opened the thread rather than Joanna just styling her own hair. That is all.

Kate1949 Sun 03-Aug-25 13:57:15

I'm glad you think it isn't really talked about Jane. It means you haven't read my several posts whining on about my hair loss and I haven't bored everyone to death!

Esmay Sun 03-Aug-25 14:02:12

Stunningly attractive as Joanna Lumley is - I long to tone down the bleached look and supercondition her hair .

Kate I have read your posts thanks I meant talked about in the wider sense apart from Joan Collins who I think has been quite open about it.
