Joanna Lumley on hair and other things

I love it when JL tells us she does her own hair most of the time, cutting and home colouring, as I do. Saves a fortune, And whats more she enjoys it .. correcting a colour that goes wrong is part of the fun. Shes older than me so makes me feel I can continue this way for many years to come. I do go to the hairdressers a couple of times a year to correct a faulty fringe when required. At least once a year I decide I can cut a good fringe and whats more I suit it. (I don’t). Takes ages to rectify. You’d think I’d have learnt my lesson by now but something comes over me.. a photo of the late Jane Birkin or her daughters perhaps is a sure fire trigger….
Any thoughts? ..

I must admit I’ve gone off Joanna Lumley a bit as she’s aged (though she’s still a few months behind me). I think the brassy look at her age doesn’t display confidence, but rather the opposite. And my personal bugbear is eyebrows that no longer follow their natural trajectory. Hers look like she’s drawn them on, in the wrong place. With me it’s a case of nice hair, shame about the face (and especially the throat)! But despite pushing 80, at least I still have naturally mid-brown hair, in pretty good nick.

As a yorkshire woman, I dont like waste!! What money I have is to be able to do or go somewhere I want to. My hair is totally white and can stay that way. For me, if you are going to colour your hair or paint y our nails, fine, so long as you dont have chipped nails or hair colour coming through from the roots.
So long as I am clean and get a decent hair cut at some point that will do me .

I cannot imagine Joanna with a professional haircut - she has her own style and oozes confidence.

How on earth do you cut the back of your hair? Or is self "styling" only for those with hair long enough to tip right over head in front of face so it can be seen to whack way at. Not something I would attempt.

The trick with cutting a fringe is to only take off a couple of mms each time and do this often. You need to pick up your fringe between your index and middle fingers and raise it up and snip a tiny smidgeon off.

My hair is just below chin length and when it needs a trim I put it into two bunches, pull these round to the front, slide the bands down to the length I want and snip the little "paint brushes" from the bottom below the band - bingo! - job done!

I have never coloured my hair as it is dark brown - but in the event of me living long enough for it to go grey I have pink in mind .......

Oh, goodness! Mine is stubbornly brown too but I'd quite like purple 😂

I did purple - it had to grow out, it really didn't fade or take ny other colour at all. My hairdresser said it's the most persistent colour.
I quite liked it but I flush easily & purple hair & red cheeks ain't a good look!

Joanna Lumley has truly awful hair, only surpassed by Camilla’s.

Some folks seem to be lucky with older hair. Whatever I do, it looks like a bird's nest or very flat if I use tongs.

Colouring it does help a bit.

Rather my white hair than the repetitive messy business of home dying, which I was good at, but I could see regrowth all too soon. So no more of that blanket colour now.

I would go to a professional now for more subtle colour if I do get fed up with it.
Our local college of beauty have a really fabulous salon and it’s all fully supervised.
