High Blood Pressure

Saw my optician last week (I have high eye pressure) and she advised me to take my BP regularly.

I had been doing so a couple of years ago after seeing a heart consultant as I have a murmur and lots of ectopics.. but last year I didn't bother taking it at all (I have a chronic pain condition and just didn't want yet another thing to worry about ) ... So .... on the advice of the optician I took it this evening and oh shock horror it is 157/89 ... help !

Please, any tips on how to change my diet and advice on getting this reading down.?

I always take mine two or three times as I have high BP, it usually drops each time I take. Take yours again but repeat once or twice. If you have high BP why aren't you being monitored by your GP or even taking meds?
See your GP if it's still high.

Calm down Sheena it's not that bad. My BP was higher than that at the GP surgery last week and they suggested I keep an eye on it which I will do.

BP readings can vary quite a lot during the day depending on what you are doing and if you have just eaten, all sorts of factors. As Tanith suggested, try leaving it for 10 minutes, sit quietly and do it again. The more worked up you get the more likely it is to be raised. Take it a few more times over the weekend and if you are still worried on Monday, go and see the nurse at your GP surgery.

dont panic ,thats not massively high ,try some breathing exercises and take it again .Dont take it without sitting quietly for a few minutes. As for diet ,cutting out salt is usually what the tell you to do .Try taking it first thing in the morning and before your dinner in the evening for a few days and see if you get a pattern

I'm on a low dose of Candasarten for my BP and it has brought it down from 164/90 to 139/76 with no ill effects, so don't worry Sheena it can be sorted.

Wish my bp reading was that low. I have major high bp problems and am on lots of different meds for it which work for a while and then it goes crazy again .
Try porridge for breakfast but not sweetened with sugar ,try fresh fruit in it , my gp tells me blueberries are good in it. My gp also says the only fruit I should eat plenty of are bananas and apples . Grapes and oranges and the others should be limited.
There is a shed load of info on this on pinterest.
Cut the salt and hidden sugar and salt . Read labels .

That's not too bad. We would advise checking it every month for 3 months and if still higher than normal then see the Practice Nurse.
When checking it in a health centre it is often taken 3 times and the lowest reading recorded as most people are anxious the first time and it goes back to normal 2nd and 3rd times. Even people who think they are not anxious - it is not something you can control yourself. The lower reading is not considered high unless 90 or over.

Last time I went for my repeat prescription my BP was up for the first time in years. My doctor lent me a machine to use at home, to take a reading 3 times . I had to record the readings on a form and take it all back after 3 days.
It was surprising how the readings changed at different times of the day.
As you say,*Elaine*, they look at the lowest reading for the day, and mine was normal, TG
Numbers are given differently here, I don't understand it. Normal is 13/7.

TriciaF Sun 01-Oct-17 11:35:55

ps "3 times a day" not "3 times".

Welshwife Sun 01-Oct-17 15:36:39

130/70 in Uk Numbers!

I see!
Sheena - I take tablets to keep my BP under control, a betablocker and another one which is supposed to make my blood more fluid so easier to pump.
If you're worried definitely see your GP about it.
Has anyone read a story by Damon Runyon called Blood Pressure? He went to his Doc. about a stomach problem and the Doctor said his BP was 'up in the spades'. He must lead a quieter life. But one of his ex criminal acquaintances turns up and makes him go round the dives with him, all night long.
Next day he went back to the Doc. and he said 'Well done - your BP is back to normal now!"
Who knows what pushes it up and down?

Wrap the cuff thingy round your arm and WITHOUT PRESSING THE START BUTTON sit for ten minutes reading a nice book. Then quietly press the button and return to reading. Have the book open in front of you and keep your eyes and mind on it! Don't look up at the screen on the machine until it has finished measuring. If you don't like the result, wait ten minutes and repeat.
Try taking it on the other arm - the readings are often different, and it is encouraging to have it a bit lower.

Good advice from Elegran I always do this, as like many, have white coat syndrome? so the only true readings are my own ones.Meds keep it on track, also a diet moderate in all things and low in alchohol and salt.I try and keep weight down as well.

I take mine at specific times of the day-firstly when I get out of bed, I then take my tablets and then my BP an hour later. 4 hours later before I take the evening dose and one hour later and sometimes randomly throughout the day.

Rightly or wrongly I take food before because otherwise I would not remember to take them.

I only do this 2 weeks before I am going to see my GP re my hypertension.

Telly Sun 01-Oct-17 17:03:23

Charleygirl - so you only take meds before going to see GP??

Charleygirl Sun 01-Oct-17 17:04:57

Very funny

Telly Sun 01-Oct-17 17:07:09

I would go go see your GP if you are worried. Your GP can arrange for you to wear a monitor for 24 hours which would give an accurate reading. Having said that, I find that a Resperate, a device that helps you slow down breathing, does work. I bought mine from an online chemist. Diet - well I guess we all know that reducing salt is useful and exercise.

Welshwife Sun 01-Oct-17 17:30:26

I have been on an almost no salt regime for over 25 years and have been so successful with it that after one blood test my GP rang at about 9-30. pm and said ' put salt on your frites- your sodium levels are too low'. When the results arrived I was off the bottom of the scale.
One of the heart specialists I saw told me to stop eating cheese - he said '.Women love cheese and it is too salty '. He was such a chauvinist I didn't bother to tell him about the blood test as he shut me up when I did try to say.
The GP later checked I could eat cheese (without much reflux problem) as he said women need it for the calcium.

TriciaF Mon 02-Oct-17 12:07:33

I hardly ever use salt. Only add a little to the dough mix when I make bread.
I love cheese but it does give indigestion. and I know what you mean by chauvinistic french men, Welshwife.

Just want to thank you all for your replies and comments... all very helpful .. I have had no internet since last Monday hence this delayed post .. but thank you all . My bp has gone done a fair bit .. so quite why it was so high last week I do not know. flowers

Sheena I'm in the same situation. I don't know why it's quite suddenly gone so high. Sometimes it's fine though. However now I'm having to record it twice a day for the GP I seem to have given myself 'white coat syndrome'! I only have to put the sleeve thingy on and I can feel myself getting stressed. I expect I'll be told to make some 'lifestyle changes' - no more M&S Salted caramel millionaire shortbread for me! Oh well. It's my health. I'll do the needful.

The same thing with BP. No need to panic, otherwise it will definitely rise. I’ll let you in to what helped me to stabilize it a bit.
I lost weight. To do this, I started doing yoga exercises in the morning, along with breathing exercises. I gave up coffee, black and green tea. I tried to stick to a diet, but it was tough smile And you know what relieved my condition? It was when I cleared my body of parasites. I stopped wanting to eat so badly. I drank Dr. Parell Cleanse to clean them out.
And drinking hawthorn is very useful for the heart too, because it stabilises the pressure. Especially if you give up black tea and drink a decoction of hawthorn instead.

Elegran Mon 06-Nov-17 14:47:27

Clean out parasites? An emotive word, evoking images of tapeworms.

Here is a fact - Your body is designed to self-regulate and rid itself of by-products - how do you think homo sapiens managed to survive for millenia without all those cleansing concoctions sold by entrepreneurs to the worried well who think they have to actively scrub the inside of their gut or it will clog up with nasties.
A glass of water first thing in the morning will flush out your kidneys without also flushing out your purse - water is free. And your colon does not harbour a plaque of toxins. The contents are moved on continuously and the walls are self-cleaning

Nothing to do with BP. That is affected by your weight, and your weight is not affected by "toxins".
