Getting a bit worried now, i have lost a stone over the last few months, and whatever i eat cant put any back on,
Also got very thinning hair, mainly on one siode
I have had a very stressfull 18 months, and put it down to that, which it could be, but also wondering if it could be Thyroid related
I am only 5ft tall and my ideal weight is about 6 and a half stone to 9 stone, according to Boots weighing scale
I am now 8st, but had gone up to 9, which i was comfortable with, never been that in my life before
I look verty scraggy now,
I am making a Drs appointment ,but wondered if anyone had Hyperthyroid and does this sound similiar
I know there are other signs to,some of which i have

My sympathies valerieJ43.

I have a similar story to tell, although I am loathe to repeat myself yet again as I have talked about it here on many threads.
I have lost a total of some 4 stone +......after a week in Hospital in Sept 2016 and Jan 2017...... I lost over 3 stone in weight.
I have had continued procedures, tests,Hospital and Surgery visits with various Consultants (I do have a history of health issues) but with no diagnoses as yet.
Certainly no Hyperthyroidism.
Following a further 3 weeks in Hospital in February this year I lost a further 9 pounds, but this could well be attributed to my being very ill and the food was abysmal!

But it amounts to a 4 stone + weight loss in some 19 months...........and I am still losing weight, all be it about a pound per day.

Although initially in 2016 I was certainly overweight and delighted to loose weight, I was not quite so happy when it just continued to roll off me,leaving me with virtually nil breasts,a scrawny face and now ugly loose wrinkly skin all over.
The plus side it has meant a complete new wardrobe from undies up wards.............but deep down of course, it is extremely worrying, especially as it still continues.

Hope that this may be of some help, although sadly I cannot offer any diagnoses or ways to halt the loss.
Wishing you better fortune.

Panache thanks for your reply,i am no stranger to losing weight when stressed and always have difficulty trying to gain, when i went up to 9st,it was a surprise, because i was eating and doing nothing different to now
I do have a little dog i walk for about an hour a day, and im quite active in the house, busy i mean, but i also spend a lot of time on the internet, so sit down a lot too
I think i have been very anxious recently and its got to be a habit,
Possibly live on my nerves, so i was once told
Anyway i am very sorry to read about your weight loss, especially if ongoing, but at least i suppose as long as nothing wrong is found thats a comfort
It the scrawnyness i hate, my body looks ok, just the neck, lol
Do you think you being anxious about it is losing you more weight?
I hope you find a solution

Overactive thyroid?

valeriej43 Fri 11-May-18 13:49:21

OldMeg yes wondered about it,just made an appointment at Drs, cant get in until next week though
Lots of stress at the moment though, just had a phone call son gone to hospital with suspected ministroke, which hes had before, so impossible to try to relax etc

OldMeg Fri 11-May-18 14:07:54

valerie hope he’s going to be OK x

Indeed Valeriej43 as a person whom has coped with stress in abundance over the years I do believe that it has some part to play with weight loss, however not to this extreme.
But life in general has been stressful over many earlier years yet at those times I probably actually gained weight!

Whilst very sorry to hear that you too have such a lot of stress, added to which, of course hearing your son is in Hospital with possibly a mini stroke will be a great burden adding to your previous stress load.
Life certainly has its way of throwing these curved balls when you least them.

Wishing him all the best and hopefully a full and speedy recovery.....same for yourself.

Thank you both, i am hoping its just a panic attack, the first time he had a ti,it was in the same circumstances, so when he felt his legs go numb he assumed it was a stroke again, but panic attacks can cause some weird symptoms
He has had a lot of stress too, and had to leave his job as a baker through medical reasons, and he is not finding it easy not working, he has neve been out of work since leaving school, apart from 3 months when his first jobs works closed down,
Also he is having problems with this flaming Universal credit, had no money for 6 weeks, just a loan which he has to pay back, £158 to last 6 weeks, so trying to get pip is stressing him out too, its a cruel benefit
Hopefully will hear from him, soon, dont know if they have kept him in or not, luckily only lives 10 minutes away from me, so saw him this morning and wasnt feeling too good

valeriej43 Fri 11-May-18 15:43:42

Sorry should have said first time he had a TIA mini stroke

I would ask your GP for a blood test to rule out Hyperthyroidism - my thyroid gland galloped out of control after an accident I had which caused a spinal injury. I lost over 4 stone and ended up seriously ill. If nothing else, it will ease your mind. Take care and I hope your son is home and well soon flowers

Hyperthyroidism makes you feel unwell and you have a very fast pulse and often palpitations. Only a blood test can diagnose it properly.

Barmeyoldbat Sat 12-May-18 10:16:25

Yes sounds like an under active thyroid and a blood test is needed

keffie Sat 12-May-18 10:24:41

I lose weight under stress too! I find it physically impossible to eat anything properly. I have to stick to very light foods such as yogurt and honey and soup which are liquid and soft.

Under stress it flares up my stomach and bowel condition also which is bad enough at the best or times.

I recently lost 2 stone in weight over a 6 week period when my husband was seriously ill and passed away. I did need to lose some weight however it is not a way I would recommend nor wanted obviously.

I have suffered from hyperthyroidism and am now on the high side of normal. Unfortunately I didn’t lose weight but was on edge, found it difficult to relax and sleep soundly. I also suffered from feeling very hot all the time which at first I attributed to the menopause. Another side effect is irrritability and I had aches in my shoulders, at one time so bad that each jolt in the car was very painful. It was brought under control by a course of carbimazole. The consultant tried to persuade me to have the treatment where you swallow radioactive liquid which destroys your thyroid. When I researched it you have to subsequently go on to the medication for an under active thyroid for the rest of your life so I resisted it and fortunately it came down to the high side of normal. I didn’t have a fast pulse or palpitations which could be why I didn’t lose weight.

Valeriej48, sounds like hyperthyroid, best thing is get a blood test, I suffer from thyroid started with hyperthyroid lost loads of weight had teatment to balance it back and came off the treatment but found out that mine tends to go up and down slightly so don't have treatment as it is such a fine line to balance but have got so used to it now without teatment know the symptons and just go with it, never feel ill with it either just weight goes either up or down, but stress can accentuate the problem, hope you get sorted and your son gets well soon.

I lost weight last year as wasn't eating properly. After a blood test I was found to be B12 deficient. I now have 3- monthly injections (quick and painless). My weight has gone up slightly and has pretty much stabilised now.

Is there any possibility that you have Late Onset Type 1 Diabetes? Contrary to what most GPS believe, this can happen at any age and in my case my weight fluctuated as my pancreas and liver fought it out. I eventually lost a stone and a half in a matter of months as the pancreas gave up the battle and I was finally ill enough for someone to listen to me. I was 75.

valeriej43 Sun 13-May-18 10:58:08

Thank you all, i think my son had a massive panic attack, because he collapsed and couldnt breathe, with similiar feelings and numbness in his legs like when he had the tia
He came home the same day,, [doesnt live with me, but
only 5 minutes away]
As for me, i do lose weight easily through stress, and have had thyroid tests before, but my hair is thinning,on one side more than the other,[not side i sleep on]
I also have Haemochromatosis, [iron overload for anyone who has never heard of it].and my ferritin is quite low, its not supposed to go over 100, but mine is dropping, so could account for hair loss
I have very regular blood tests, and i am sure its not diabetes, and liver etc are checked every time, as Hemo, causes liver problems, in fact any organ problems if iron builds up
I am in general very healthy, i am not on any meds for anything, and treatment for too much iron is a venesecton.about a pint of blood taken when ferritin gets too high, but can affect me when its too low,it can go to anaemia,
I think it is just stress related really, but also felt more tired recently, but will check with Dr, cant get an appointment until the 24th, which is very unusual for my surgery, but

valeriej43 Sun 13-May-18 11:10:02

Luckyfour i have wondered about B12 deficiency, and bought some B12 capsules, ,already on Vit D from Dr
I am eating well, although not a big eater, and have substanital meals, but not a big meat eater
With the amount of cakes etc that i eat i should be much fatter
I am by the way, just under 5ft tall, so weight is ok for my height, but felt better with just even 7lb more on me,
BMI 21

Minerva Sun 13-May-18 16:06:29

I am glad at least that it isn’t diabetes. Being insulin dependent is no fun. Good luck with working it out.

valeriej43 Sun 13-May-18 18:08:15

My eldest son has just been diagnosed with diabetes, and my 2 youngest are borderline, all from their fathers side, none on my side of the family

Fennel Sun 13-May-18 19:00:52

My weight goes up and down - I started a thread about it last year:
www.gransnet.com/forums/health/1242888-losing-weight-in-old-age
Good advice above, plus ask for a blood test to see if you're anaemic. You mention ferritin?
To put on weight, eat lots of Nutella, on hot toast smile.

TwiceAsNice Sun 13-May-18 23:14:28

IT may be stress or an under active thyroid but I lost a lot of weight a few months before I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I was also tired and extra thirsty in the evenings. Stabilised now and normal weight. Get your GP to do a blood or urine test for that just in case.

valeriej43 Mon 21-May-18 20:12:56

Fennel thanks for the tip, will try Nutella, also re hair loss
i read that Zinc shortage could be a cause
Twice as nice no thirst, i m sure my Dr will run all tests, , i think stress really, was always told i live on my nerves, quite anxious, and dont sleep well.lots of energy, then sudden tiredness

DanniRae Tue 22-May-18 08:45:12

Sorry to hear about your troubles valerie - I have no advice but send you my best wishes and some flowers
