More gas/bloating as we get older?

This is a question my OH suggested I asked Gransnetters. He feels he suffers more from gas/wind and bloating than he did when younger (now 69). I haven't noticed it in myself, except when I eat something like French onion soup.

Have any of you noticed being more "windy" as you age?

Could he have developed a slight food intolerance? I used to get bloating and wind and I’ll swear the amount of air in my body made me pound lighter. It worsened over time to include nausea and eventually sickness and feeling unwell for at least a day.

It took a while but I narrowed it down to garlic. That stuff which is so good for you and which all chefs liberally add to nearly every dish. I used to be fine with it and love garlic bread so assume its something which may develop with an aging gut.

Out of eleven of us on our recent touring holiday there was me and another lady who couldn’t touch the stuff. (She couldn’t eat onions or leaks either so had even bigger problems.)

I think so many of these things are just natural aging progression we are all living much longer than we used to and bits of us get slack
I don’t think we should rush off to the doctors for everything just accept it’s how it is Once you get given tablets for this that and the other you’re on the slippery slope
About 40 years ago I saw the doctor with excess wind I was immediacy diagnosed with IBS which was nonsense as I had no other symptoms 40 years on I still have a lot of gas it’s just how my body works I remember when my grandson was little he was lying on my tummy and said ‘Nanny your tummy is playing a really big tune’ I don’t jump to medical conclusions unless there are other symptoms

He needs a test, gp will send him for one, just to be on the safe side. Don`t mess with anything and that includes pre and pro biotics, he needs to have some things ruled out first and then you can mess with his diet

When I had a very uncomfortable colonoscopy, I was told I had a Tortuous bowel, ie very long, large and loopy! I get lots of trapped wind and it is such a relief when it moves on and out! Good thing I live alone.

At least mine don't pong. That would make it ten times more embarrassing!!!

Like Her Majesty, I had a fartectomy , so I can’t really comment.

Jane10 ?

harrigran Sun 31-Mar-19 10:14:06

Well I thought I had a fartectomy too but it turns out that I have a colostomy that went to music college and loves to contribute at choral concerts and any other musical soiree ?

Simple! Take out you hearing aids at meal times, don't watch "Blazing Saddles" and keep off baked beans and Brussel Sprouts! grin

Thanks again for the helpful replies. I feel onions and garlic could be a factor as well as natural aging. I think he just wanted reassurance than some others get windier with age. It’s only recently that he’s admitted to feeling older at all?

I’m enjoying the amusing posts- keep them coming?

A good laugh here too. So glad that people can accept that it does happen and they can laugh about it.

We should form an orchestra !! I wonder what Gareth would think ? He could accompany us on the piano---------outside the hall !

GabriellaG54 Sun 31-Mar-19 20:22:29

IMO it's moving less and not digesting foods properly.

EllanVannin Sun 31-Mar-19 20:44:37

It has more to do with swallowing air.

EllanVannin Sun 31-Mar-19 20:45:42

Speaking while eating.

Our digestive processes certainly need help as we get older, whether we suffer from gas or not.
The internal bacteria needs renewing and boosting to prevent numerous intestinal and bowel-related ills.
Especially if we've taken anti-biotics or any of the many medications which kill the good bacteria in our gut.

I take acidophilus bifidus capsules or Digestive Enzymes and if all else fails, which it rarely does, Activated Charcoal - which is also recommended if you have 'runny tummy'.

Never a bubble, burp or balloon from me.

NfkDumpling Mon 01-Apr-19 06:58:46

I did hear somewhere - it may have been Woman's Hour - that old people do fart more, but those farts don't smell!

Terry Wogan always used to say that 'It's not the trapped wind you have to worry about its the ones that get away!'

Both DH and I have terrible trouble. I have been cursed with it all my life and I'm glad he has it now because it means I don't have to suppress my wind. ("Better out than in"!) I haven't actually broached the subject but we ought to try leaving various food types out of our diet to see if it is an intolerance to something. In the meantime we continue to trumpet to each other like courting elephants.

If I could have one wish, it would be that I never had to worry about it again, it bothers me so when I'm in company.

EllanVannin Mon 01-Apr-19 09:11:02

JackyB, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. My mum was the only one in the family who suffered with digestive problems because she couldn't/didn't pass wind " naturally ".

Have you heard of " Mr Methane ?" He made a living from his wind. It all started when he went to yoga classes with his sister and whatever move/position the class was taught, he'd erupt ! His sister then suggested he go into " entertainment " which he did and after eating a plateful of beans, he appeared on shows.
When he appeared on a show in Australia my friend and I were in stitches as he performed to " The Blue Danube ".

Jane10 Mon 01-Apr-19 09:18:25

There was 'Le Petomane' the famous French music hall entertainer too.

Definitely, though I think I've developed some degree of gluten intolerance. If I cut it out for a few days I do notice a difference.
I find rice noodles good, but the gluten free bread I've tried is pretty awful, not too awful taste wise but it falls apart so easily.
If anyone knows of a good brand, I'd be grateful! Though maybe just keeping right off bread would be good - I could do with losing a few pounds.... or rather quite a few - as long as they came off in the right places.

David1968 Mon 01-Apr-19 11:06:27

No, actually I'd say that I'm less "windy" now! And I eat more fibre than I ever did. Perhaps that's the answer:I know people say that fibre causes wind (all the jokes about beans) but I've found that a high fibre diet has actually reduced the issue, for me.

I went to GP a few weeks ago as I had terrible gas for a week or so. Given blood test was anaemic sent to hospital for gastroscopy I had an Ulcer plus a polyp.

IBS can occur at any age. I was diagnosed four years ago along with acid reflux.
Probiotics (good live ones) Prebiotics to help feed the healthy bacteria, home made kefir and yogurt all help but having just finished a course if antibiotics for a chest infection I now have to work at building up my gut bacteria all over again!
