More gas/bloating as we get older?

This is a question my OH suggested I asked Gransnetters. He feels he suffers more from gas/wind and bloating than he did when younger (now 69). I haven't noticed it in myself, except when I eat something like French onion soup.

Have any of you noticed being more "windy" as you age?

Lol, I sometimes think that threads on here are just a wind up - sorry no pun intended. I'm sure the O P isn't though so no offence.

Lol at Harrigran.

I thought what the heck is a Fartectomy so googled. Lol, I don't think I read what it really is but it was an eye opener - or perhaps I should keep them shut! Urban dictionary came up shock

I worked in a hospital for 28 years and read in a medical journal that the average person farts 14 times a day (no mention of age). The rest of t he article was abut a man who farted 14 times an hour and had difficulty keeping a job.

Definitely! I can fart for Scotland...do I care? No! just blame it on the dog...you can do anything you like if you live alone.

What form does BioKult come in, Anja?

I know I should probably try some of those 'gut friendly' drinks, but they all seem to be milky/yoghurt-y, and such things make me heave.

(Something gin-and-tonic flavoured would be nice...)

Oh some of this has made me laugh out loud! I have had trouble with wind all my life as I have been an IBS sufferer since I was 13. It's no joke when you have to hold on to it and can be embarrassing - I live alone so I'm fine in my own space but if I have to share a room with anyone I'm always anxious! I don't think mine has got any worse with age, it's probably better as I have eventually worked out what makes it worse. Gluten free definitely helps - to the gransnetter who asked M&S seeded loaf is the best I've found. Thanks for the laughs, it's brightened up my morning!

Assuming you are in the UK is he doing his bowel screening.....

Kim19 Mon 01-Apr-19 12:04:35

Nope. Have noticed it's totally diet related for me.

I left the bathroom this morning apologising to my husband that it seemed every wind instrument in an orchestra had wanted to make itself heard ?

Juliet27 Mon 01-Apr-19 12:13:14

My old grandma used to say ‘wherever you be, let your wind blow free’. She had no pride!!

LizH13 Mon 01-Apr-19 12:30:40

Definitely very windy here. My concern is that I can't always control it. The first time it happened I had bent down to pick a pen up during a meeting, more mortifying as there were 2 new male members of staff with us. Since then it's got worse and some days I can orchestrate every step I take. I definitely know any dried fruit is a problem. It can be very embarrassing as I have no sense of when they will pop out.

I have been looking out for an April Fool thread. Could this be it or is there one I haven't seen yet? grin

gigi1958 Mon 01-Apr-19 13:00:24

At 60 nothing yet but i have noticed that people in their late 70's and beyond have "walking farts" they get up and there she blows!
Many of them seem to be unaware that they do it.

Niucla97 Mon 01-Apr-19 13:00:40

I was told not to eat potatoes or bread ( I do have the occasional slice of sour dough bread.)

Esspee Mon 01-Apr-19 13:20:54

nanasam thank you for that! I laughed out loud at your contribution. grin

grandtanteJE65 Mon 01-Apr-19 13:26:27

Yes, I pass wind more often now than I did, say, 20 years ago.

I boil onions for ten minutes before frying them, and eat yogurt for breakfast which I find makes the problem less troublesome.

And I am healthy, so I think an increase of flatulence is part of the aging process for some people. Both my mother and maternal grandmother dealt with it by omitting certain foodstuffs from their diet as they aged.

Ellie Anne Mon 01-Apr-19 14:06:04

Yes I’ve noticed that and it’s very embarrassing.

Hilmix Mon 01-Apr-19 14:06:56

I have a large tablespoonful of sauerkraut with my lunch every day, think this is good for my gut health. x

Barmeyoldbat Mon 01-Apr-19 15:35:40

Maybe we could harness some off the power from our wind for the National Grid.

Jane10 Mon 01-Apr-19 15:53:46

Excellent scheme Barmeyoldbat!

Caro57 - we're in Ireland but have the Bowelscreen programme here, which he did.

Shysal - I posted first on 30th March, so not an April Fool thread - you'll have to keep looking!

It is an amusing topic for some people, but judging by some posts, it's a problem for others. I don't think my OF* has too much of a problem as I'm not aware of it. It was just that he was aware of being "windier" than he used to be.

Since he'd asked me to post, I read out some of the replies yesterday when a friend was visiting and we had a good laugh at the funny ones. Others have made useful suggestions - thanks, I'm passing them on to him.

*OF=Old Fart - maybe could be added to list of Acromyns/Abbreviations! That wasn't my idea, but the friend's. (OH didn't object).

Perhaps feminist Ashleigh Ingle (the Seriously..... thread) could harness some of you, train you up, and set you to take the fight to us loud farting passive-aggressive males, using our wind power to assert our dominance.

Glammy57 Mon 01-Apr-19 16:44:29

LizH13 - you made me laugh until I cried! I was diagnosed with IBS twenty years ago and it is the bane of my existence. I bend over, wind is expelled, laugh and same thing happens. It is very embarrassing for me as, usually, I am so polite. I’ve a feeling that my anxiety causes IBS flare ups!

Greciangirl Mon 01-Apr-19 16:51:19

I suffer terribly from flatulence and belching.
It’s almost every single day now and it’s getting me down.
Of course, it’s worse after eating foods such as broccoli and cabbage etc, but I love my veggies and don’t want to give them up. I don’t suffer from indigestion, but I have been diagnosed with diverticulosis.
I should have had a colonoscopy, but couldn’t face the horrible procedure. There is no pain, so I’m just putting up with all the above symptoms.

If giving up vegetables, what sort of multi vitamin should I take.
Any recommendations?

My DH has been suffering with the same problem recently. Today he said that he had felt much better over the last few days and said that he realised he had not eaten any bread. He is now going to cut down on bread and see what happens. Poor bread maker will fell unloved.
