I’m a big listener of radio 4 while I’m doing housework. I’ve just listened on catch-up an interview with Clarke Carlisle (who I’ve never heard of) talk about depression and his attempted suicide. It was really interesting and he mentioned something called the Goldberg depression test Out of interest I googled it and up popped a questionnaire. So I did it, I answered the questions truthfully. I thought my answers were fairly positive so thought I’d get a your reasonably ok result, but no the result was Your moderately to severely depressed. I’m really shocked. I don’t really feel depressed or rather I didn’t before I took the test now I want to cry! I wonder if anyone of you fancy taking the test and sharing your result and how you feel about it. Ps I also bought the children’s dvd mentioned in the radio so maybe I’m just gullible.

Depression is an illness the same as any other. I was in the 'pull yourself together/you bring it on yourself' camp until it hit me like a ton of bricks (severe anxiety rather than depression). Please don't assume depression etc us self induced. Difficult lives/events can break even the strongest camel's back.

is not us

I shouldn't worry morethan2. Are you old enough to remember the song "My word You do Look Queer?" The song ended with the person feeling so much better when someone told them they looked well!

0% for me. I used to suffer badly with depression when I was younger. A good indicator would have been a question asking if your first thought on waking was something along the lines of, "Oh not another day to face!"

KatyK Fri 26-Apr-19 11:41:34

Your last sentence is a great way of explaining it Crazy.

Frannygranny Fri 26-Apr-19 12:45:44

I scored 11% and unlikely to suffer from depression. Obviously my medication for clinical depression is working!
Excellent last sentence, Crazy, really sums it up when you’re in the grip of depression.

I could not load the questionnaire so I have no idea if I am depressed or not.

When I wake up in the morning my first words (after good morning to DH) are "oh dear!". Done the test several times now. It's always between 50 and 56%. And that's with my fluoxetine.

A lot could be down to tiredness with aging. Tiredness, and lack of strength, takes away so much of the joy in life.

Gonegirl Fri 26-Apr-19 12:59:05

I will shut up now before I bring everyone down.

KatyK Fri 26-Apr-19 13:01:59

No need Gonegirl it's best to share.

Gonegirl Fri 26-Apr-19 13:06:06

Thanks KatyK smile

Trouble with these tests is no leeway with answers as with the sleep one, yes I am always tired but I take enough medication to knock a horse out, not because I am depressed.
Think you know your own instincts as to whether you are or not

Thank you for the link Gonegirl I took the test as morethan requested. Score 0% Depression Unlikely. I didn't think I was depressed anyway. flowers

Nannyme Fri 26-Apr-19 13:41:45

I scored 11% - depression not likely !!!!

Tiggersuki Fri 26-Apr-19 13:50:51

Took it out of interest and scored 3. Feel a bit disappointed I didn't score higher. No idea how you got such a high score if you feel fine. Sit outside ( if it's not raining) and listen to the birds singing. I think that would cheer up anybody.

dianetheartist Fri 26-Apr-19 14:02:54

I scored 67% severe depression,,, not surprising really..had to stop the antidepressants I was taking about 2 months ago ..Initially, I had them to stop nerve pain but because they caused severe and I mean severe sweating from head to toe, all day and night I stopped them.. I cut down gradually and the sweats stopped. But the depression has come...back to the docs for me,

It reports that I am moderately depressed but the wife told me I am fine, so that’s ok then! When I was off work severely depressed she told me I should “Snap our if it”. Great tonic my missys !!!!

CrazyGrandma2 Fri 26-Apr-19 14:36:01

Gone Girl Hope you feel better soon. It's a hideous illness. No need to hide. I'm sure many of us have experienced it and eventually come through it. flowers

I am possibly mildly depressed but I do think as we age it is more likely. I am in my mid 80s and have been widowed for 10 years a state I do not enjoy. I think being alone affects me most, but I get plenty of phone email contact with my children. I do think I should push myself more to go out but friends are in short supply. I can lie on my bed with radio on , iPad in hand and sun streaming in and do not want to go out? Are there others like me?

Lily65 Fri 26-Apr-19 15:28:51

A GP does not declare somebody who is bit fed up and miserable as suffering from depression.

Thats because the GP has spent years training and knows how to ask the correct questions/observe the person's demeanor /possibly perform some tests.

Depression is a serious and growing problem and nothing at all to do with " feeling a bit miserable.

Marianne1953 Fri 26-Apr-19 16:03:20

Possibly mildly depressed . I don’t think I will lose any sleep over it

cupcake1 Fri 26-Apr-19 16:04:48

11% so depression not likely! However being a born pessimist who knows what’s around the corner hmm

Gonegirl Fri 26-Apr-19 16:06:27

Thank you CrazyGrandma2.

sharon103 Fri 26-Apr-19 17:18:43

Gonegirl. I know what you mean. Hope you improve very soon. flowers

Disneyfan Fri 26-Apr-19 17:48:36

I got 0% but questions were quite leading.

Lily65 Fri 26-Apr-19 17:55:57

A person does not always know they are depressed, that's the whole point. It creeps up on you and due to shame around mental health problems you deny it.
