Are care homes being seen as a cushy investment or even. “Cash cow” at the tragic expense of their residents who may be our loved ones or even ourselves?
I am horrified by what I have read, filled with foreboding for the future and (I think righteous) anger at these people who are so cruelly abusing our trust and their residents .
And I fear CQC are impotent in too many cases.

I feel I have to comment here in defence of the CQC . I worked with them, not for them, inspecting homes for many years and theirs is a challenging job. Not only are there mountains of paperwork and policies to check but just as important and probably more important, speaking to staff, residents, visitors and gaining their perspective of the home. From observations things are not always what you are told, so it is a matter of listening to people and seeing what are you told is what actually happens.
when homes have been below standard the CQC gives them a short period to improve, they visit again and will check several times so the process is fair and all visits are unannounced.
Yes, there are some homes that are very poor and in my experience these have been dealt with and yes there are some brilliant ones not always the "posh" ones, some being a bit shabby but the care has been wonderful.

re paying in France- when we were there we heard of an english person who went into a french care home. Not only the next of kin in France had to pay, but some in the UK were also chased up to share the cost.
I always thought it was strange because France is a socialist country, But family responsibility trumps everything else.
It's reflected in the inheritance laws too.

Ready for this. My hubbie’s aunt spent her last years in a care home which had issues shall we say. Her GP, who I incidentally worked for, was a regular visiting GP to aunt and other residents. GPs then were sent a form from the Council to complete on the relevant care home they visited. I was appalled, when the said GP gave me the form to return, at what I read. The care home was given a glowing report by said GP - I knew better! When I commented on this, the GP said ‘anything for a quiet life’.
