Yes, I know using capitals means shouting!

Shouting is needed for this.

LINK > Red extreme heat warning issued for first time across (part of) England for Monday and Tuesday

It’s been on every news bulletin this morning, in addition to being anticipated all of yesterday - news, weather forecasts etc etc
I find it hard to believe there is anybody out there to whom this comes as news!

I’ve not watched the television or listened to the radio all day so have not seen a news bulletin with this information. I seem to be in a bubble on my own!

Here in Greater Manchester it’s been cloudy and cool all day, I even saw a few spots of rain this morning! I’ve just checked the forecast on line and it looks as if it will get hot here so I’ll have a look at the link Star Dreamer sent to see what I can do to keep comfortable.

Anyone suffering from the heat come to the east coast it is very moderate here no signs of a heatwave just a nice 20* with a stiff breeze

Lucca Sat 16-Jul-22 07:55:06

I think we know now what may happen and what to do.
Be prepared and don’t panic ..it won’t help.

StarDreamer Sat 16-Jul-22 08:24:37

Has anyone seen any official guidance as to whether, having available 200 millilitres of natural orange juice with its natural sugars and 200 millilitres of water, in relation to the heatwave, which it is better to drink, or does the sugar make no difference either way in relation to the heatwave?

If so, please post a link.

MawtheMerrier There are always people who read nothing, listen to nothing, see nothing and then complain that they were never informed of something. I had an aunt and uncle like that.

Blubelle look at the maps, it is Eastern England that is going to suffer most severely from the heat wave.

Stardreamer I think anyone who comes on GN is likely to be aware of the world around them and be aware that this heatwave is coming and not need to depend on a GN thread to inform them. Even TeacherAnne only spoke of being in a bubble for a day.

Panicking helps no one. Quiet calm consideration and discussion of different ways to keep cool and cope with the heat would be much more useful. I think I will start a thread on ways to keep cool in the heatwave, much more useful.

StarDreamer - I looked for an answer to your question about whether water or orange juice was best for hydration and tried to post link but it didn't work!
Anyway, in mostly doesn't matter - any liquid works. But a small amount of sugar may help absorption of the water. If it were me, I'd mix the water and orange juice together and drink it all! A pinch of salt added will also help. If you're sweating a lot you'll lose salt.

Thank you.

If you can say anything about the website please I will try to find it and try to add a link.

My DGS and DGD’s primary school is having a school trip on Tuesday to a small theme park. We have been before and there is no shade at all! I really can’t understand why it is still going ahead and I am very worried.

Well up until yesterday it was. Head teacher had been in contact with said park to see if date could be changed but no go. But yes, I am hopeful that sense will prevail.

School has been cancelled here.
Some are finishing (have finished) a day or two earlier.

I really don't understand why anyone is exercised by Met Office warnings. And as far as the media reporting is concerned - well everyone knows that dramatic headlines improve circulation.

We are not being 'nannied', we are being informed - and like all other 'warnings' of this nature, the Met Office has to cater for the lowest-common-denominator and assume that not everyone knows everything about what to do in a heatwave. And not everyone does. I've seen two people walking panting dogs in the middle of the day on the sunny-side of the road.

If you're seasoned to heatwaves in our normally temperate climate, then just scroll on by the intentionally dramatic headlines - and you certainly don't need to log on to to the MO website.

But if any of the information or tips help to save someone from heatstroke, or becoming ill through de-hydration, electrolyte imbalances, overheating, etc, etc... what does it matter to you? People die in heatwaves. I'm no fan of any Tory government, but it really does seem like they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. They will certainly be 'responsible' if there are excessive deaths and 'questions will be asked'. The government is having a COBRA meeting to save itself from accusations of negligence.

The information is out there, it's not obligatory to read it and you're completely free to ignore it.

Is the whole school going or would some pupils still be at school?
Your grandchildren's parents could always keep them off school that day if they're not happy about the trip.

This is a difficult decision for the school as the theme park doesn't seem prepared to offer an alternative date and probably won't refund the money either.
