I got a uti 6 weeks ago and since then I have been on 3 day courses of antibiotics, 7 day courses and I am now at my wits end. Just finishing a 7 day course and they said they are extending it for another 7 days (nitrofurontion) but I’ve got worse since I started it so worried it’s not working or the bug is resistant to antibiotics. Anyone else had this bother with a uti. I feel like my life is consumed by it. Any suggestions or knowledge about long-standing utis welcome.

Yes, I take D Mannose every day.

Just to update - I was in hospital last week and they gave me a powder of fosfomycin to take. Let me out on Friday evening said it was gone and it’s back! Or never truly went away. I’m so upset that it’s never going to go! 🙁

Why not try a combination of the suggestions here.
Try to get your bladder in good shape and deal with your urine at the same time.

Try the weeing into a cool bath, or pouring a jug of water over the area as you wee.

Take the D. Mannose, and drink cranberry, or clear water.

Start a little notebook, and try to track any progress.

I’ve bought d mannose and was going to start that today and the estrogen cream I was given yesterday. Is it ok to take these if you have tested positive for infection again?

MsBee Wed 24-Jul-24 11:04:24

How much D-Mannose should you take for UTI?
how much d-mannose to take
How much D-Mannose should you take for UTI?
With the NHS [ NHS Cystitis ] now mentioning D-Mannose as an alternative way to prevent UTI's from coming back - how much D-Mannose should you take for a urinary tract infection?

Please Note: The information in this article pertains to Waterfall D-Mannose . Not all D-Mannose is created equal. Waterfall D-Mannose is 100% pure D-Mannose, undiluted by additives such as cranberry extract, inactive substances (fillers) or other excipients which may have adverse biological effects.

D-Mannose Dosage
The effectiveness of D-Mannose when used to combat an E. coli infection varies from person to person depending on weight, severity of infection and other biological factors such as gut health, ability to absorb the D-Mannose through the small intestine and pre-existing conditions such as Crohn's disease or SIBO. D-Mannose tablets can be taken with water or your favourite beverage, the powder can also be mixed into your favourite beverage. Avoid urine acidifying beverages such as cranberry juice and alcohol.

When Symptomatic
For rapid relief, ingest three grams of pure D-Mannose with a glass of water every 3 hours, day and night for the first 48 hours. Do not skip the night doses, set your alarm. Gradually reduce frequency over the next few days as symptoms improve. Reduce to prophylactic dose, 2 grams daily, once symptoms have completely subsided.

You may experience 2-3 more flare ups before all embedded bacteria have been removed and your propensity for attacks diminishes. If the infection has reached the kidneys (you may feel lower back pain, sick or have a fever), see your Doctor immediately.

Prophylactic Dose
To help prevent recurrence, ingest two grams of pure D-Mannose with a glass of water once a day. This Randomized Clinical Trial has demonstrated a 2 gram daily dose of pure D-Mannose prevented recurrence of acute cystitis in 85.4% of women with a history of recurrent UTI, performing 4 times better than the prescribed antibiotic.

Ooh, you'll have to read down a long way to find the dosage instructions.

Im afraid i have an antibiotic resistant uti. Im 87 years and just discharged from hospital after a moderate stroke. I just finished another course of antibiotics and the hospital pathology department found EColi present. Ive had diarrhoea lately and I'm usually constipated.
Because if my stroke i find it hard to remember the name of the antibiotics I've taken. Sorry to mak6so many typos but im desperate for help. Someone on the forum recommended D-Mannose...my sister recommended i take Hiprex again. Any help would be appreciated.

Do NOT restrict in any way your fluid intake (except for alcohol) the more you can drink, the better it can help to flush out the system.
If ab's are not working, then the chances of something you can buy over the counter doing so is minimal.
Cranberry juice has been shown to have no real help, except that people think it does.

When I had a continuous UTI, over several weeks being treated with different anti-biotics, but not going, I demanded my GP referred me to Urology dept at hospital.

Thank goodness I did, as there, they used a camera up my bladder (not as painful as it sound), and discovered a growth. Two weeks later this was removed under a GA, had to have tests annually for five years as there was a possibility of it growing again - it did not. Now totally discharged from hospital for that, and not UTI in all that time.

I do also use a GP prescribed vaginal HRT pessary twice a week

Cressy Mon 16-Mar-26 09:06:02

Yup. Vaginal oestrogen and plenty of fluid helped me enormously.
