When to resume sex after hip replacement

Sorry if this is too explicit but if you dont ask...

I'm now 3 weeks post total hip replacement and am starting to think about sex! Trouble is, my DH is (ahem) very overweight and I'm quite skinny, so the thought of missionary scares the life out of me! I also can't widen my hips much (physio has given me a 'clam shell' exercise as part of standard physio and my knees just will not part).

I can't kneel down and get back up and I can't comfortably lie on my side to just 'do him'.

Should we just wait a bit longer, given that he is feeling a bit frustrated. He has 2 hands after all! Or is there a position we could try?

I'm not shocked, nor a prude, but the original post has unfortunately conjured up an image, that I cannot get out of my head.

I'm of the opinion that what happens in a marriage, stays in a marriage. Why would anyone want to write about it on a public forum?

As I have posted before, why haven't you asked your clinicians, the people who know your medical history?
None of us have any knowledge of your physical condition, so are not qualified to advise..

I don't think that you've posted before If this is a serious question :
Three weeks is too early .
Healing will permit sex between six to eight weeks after the incisions have fully healed .
Full healing around the joint itself takes a full three months .
If your hubby is overweight he needs to do something about it . He shouldn't lie on top of you .
You'll have to pleasure him manually .

And most importantly :
you need to consult your doctor .

You actually replied to a previous post by the OP.

Having had a hip replacement recently, 3 weeks is rather too soon for amorous activity, we all recover at different rates, you will know when YOU feel it’s comfortable.
Take care a failed hip replacement can be a real nightmare.

I had a vague recollection , but having checked I couldn't find any posts from the OP .
I answered without hesitation because three weeks is too early !

It was only last night and you and I were two of only three people that replied to her query which is why I remembered it. It was the post about dogs claws.

What about the spoon postion, can be quite gentle

Jaxjacky Wed 30-Oct-24 20:39:43

If you search on user name the poster has made comment on many subjects.
I too don’t see any issue with the OP’s question, we’ve had discussion on urination, constipation, menstrual issues etc, making love is a healthy and important part of many relationships - so I keep being told 🤣🤣

Thankyou ladies for making me laugh out loud! My daughter with Down Syndrome asked me why I was laughing! I did not enlighten her.

Well, I didn't contribute because I took my dogs to the vets to have their claws trimmed.

I think it's a fair question. I don't have an answer as I've never had a hip replacement, but if you aren't ready, then don't seems sensible. Maybe you could ask your doctor for advice?

Note to self: Never ask any sex questions.

Exactly 👍🏻.
It’s strange to ask a group of grannies such a personal question. I know we do have some posters who worked as doctors or nurses but why not ask your medical team 0P

No, most on GN think it’s wrong to talk about sex.

Allira Wed 30-Oct-24 21:00:29

It's not wrong but it's personal.
Everyone is different!

Galaxy Wed 30-Oct-24 21:03:09

Oh good grief. Those who expressed doubts arent prudish or think its wrong, they just tend to have a lot of experience of people on the internet.

Farzanah Wed 30-Oct-24 21:07:31

I definitely don’t worry about talking about sex, it’s a normal bodily function after all. I just had my bull** antennae alerted when I read the OP.

MissAdventure Wed 30-Oct-24 21:11:23

I'd rather ask people here than a consultant.
"Lived experience" isn't it?
I'd be embarrassed by the doctor saying "Well, you could bend over your table...."

Babs03 Wed 30-Oct-24 21:18:28

Surely they give out a post op leaflet covering all bases kind of thing.

Has anyone seen my pearls - I really need to clutch them!

😂😂

Marydoll Wed 30-Oct-24 21:21:37

I was asked prior to my hysterectomy if I had an active sex life. The consultant said that my answer would impact on how he proceeded and stitched me up. He didn't want to ruin my sex life..

I looked him straight in the eye and said, Of course.
Inside I was cringing. 😊
After all, I was a convent girl and had led a sheltered life. 😉

kittylester Wed 30-Oct-24 21:28:49

I think a group of grans will not be thrown by a genuine question about sex.

This thread now reminds me of more recent gn threads.

MissAdventure Wed 30-Oct-24 21:38:02

Has Keir Starmer had a hip replacment, then?
