Sudden loss of vision.

I have the same thing. I woke one morning and my left eye was glued together soi rang 111 and they advised eyedrops they didn’t do anything.
When I got to the doctor, he looked and said I had ulcer in my left eye and it was caused by the cold sore virus
My eyes always been poor and this left Eye now is completely useless can be registered blind in that one.My right eye had a lens replacement because of a cataract and that’s been playing up a bit but I believe I am to get some sort of laser treatment for that, but when you’ve only got one good eye and my good eye isn’t that good before the cataract replacement vision in 13 point something Anyway I’ve got through it okay? Because the retina is scarred I will never get vision in the left eye
When I was younger I suffered with cold sores quite a lot but had not had one for a few years. I was so surprised when I realised it was the herpes virus that had caused the ulcer,,give me shivers…
I just hope and pray I do not get it in my right eye because then I would be blind…

I suddenly lost the sight in one eye which turned out to be a Tia. My sight returned the next day and has been normal since.
So, different from yours. I do hope you will be ok.

I am sorry this has happened to you. It is scary. I have lost vision in both eyes for a few moments caused by migraine ... gave me a fright!
I hope things resolve for you soon.

My friend temporarily lost vision years ago with a (totally painless) "migraine with aura". Another friend reminded me about it as I described some curious symptoms my son-in-law had suffered (like a stroke) which was apparently a migraine with aura too.

Hi. I’m so sorry for you this is a very painful condition. I started having this regularly since I was aged 11 used to spend days in bed with awful pain. Nowadays aged 67 I still get them occasionally 🤞usually when I’m tired or stressed. I have permanent scaring in one eye now. Corneal transplant I believe is the only solution.
The treatment now is so much better. You have to start the ointment and drops immediately. I keep a supply at home.

I first had partial blindness at school when I was about 13. No headache or aura or nausea. I turned to my friend and whispered "I've got a faulty textbook with no printing on these pages", and she said "No you haven't!"

I went to the school sickbay and was told I had partial blindness caused by a migraine. It was terrifying, but my Mum didn't take much notice, and it had gone a few hours later.

After that I had regular migraines for about 20 years until I discovered my triggers (mainly foods, sometimes hormones or stress)

Littleannie, reading your post I could ' feel' your fear. I have no experience of this but I am thinking about you . You have suspected bowel cancer too - goodness me no wonder you are in terror. My Mum woke one morning with a violent pain in her eye and was sent immediately to hospital - it was glaucoma.
You say you and your family have never had a cold sore !? You are off to hospital again on Friday , that's good . However if you pain continues or returns tonight or tomorrow I urge you to go straight to hospital A &E. department.
You must be very frightened, do you live alone ? Sorry to learn your sisters washing machine is on the blink again !!!!?? Really ?? I am sure that news was earth shattering for you ! Not much help was she .

Thank you all. And thank you Shelflife for your very kind comments. I'm not on my own, but my husband is 89 now (I'm 79), and I try not to worry him as he has health problems of his own. We are muddling along at the moment just doing the essentials. I think the dust is building up but with my eye as it is I can't see it!

Good grief, how awful.

I carry the herpes virus since birth and regularly have cold sores for past 66 years, usually when I’m stressed.

I had no idea of other damage this virus could cause.

You are a considerate woman - not wanting to worry your husband my husband is 86 , ten years older than me so I understand that.

I woke on Saturday morning to find I had lost the sight in one eye. It was a total blur with dreadful pain shooting through it. I went to A and E and saw an eye consultant who said it is the cold sore virus. I have never had a cold sore in my life, and nor have any of the family. He gave me antibiotic drops and I go again on Friday. Has anybody else had this? Did your vision return? On top of this I am on the cancer pathway with suspected bowel cancer and awaiting further tests. I am in total terror and despair.
My sister phoned today to say she is going away for a few days. I told her about my eye. She said "oh dear. Would you believe my washer has broken again". I was speechless.

Some people are thoughtless aren’t they?!
It sounds scary but maybe will clear up soon with the antibiotics 💐
Good luck with your biopsies and fingers crossed it won’t be cancer.
I have had four checks for cancers and it wasn’t that in every case thank goodness, but the NHS is still very good and sees patients within the fortnight for checks.

Thank you all for your kind wishes. They tell me it is shingles virus, closely related to cold sore virus. I am now on hourly eye drops, 4 hourly steroid tablets and antibiotic eye ointment. They have told me not to expect a sudden improvement. I go again next week. I shall be clock watching all week so I don't miss a dose of anything!

Gosh what rotten luck but at least they've found the culprit and are treating it seriously. Good luck with all the drops.

Oh littleannie that sounds horrible. I hope the shingles haven’t done any damage, have you got any sight back yet ? I suppose it’s difficult to tell with all the drops and ointment. Make sure you rest, and look after yourself.

Sorry to hear the diagnosis and I hope the medications give you a steady improvement.
I find lying down on my bed is the easiest way to do my glaucoma eye drops.
I do sympathise with the hourly drops. I have in a similar situation of frequent eye drops written down a large time table and ticked them off each time only after applying the drops.
Its so easy to forget. Or think "did I do that one". Best wishes.

I had an incident not long ago when the shingles virus broke our on my eyelid. I too thought it was a cold sore virus. I had antivirals to clear the problem. The doctor advised me to go to eye casualty if I had further problems.
