Persimmon soap for old person smell

I was reading a post on Mumsnet yesterday. It was by a woman who had her elderly mother living with her. The mother had her own rooms. The daughter was complaining about the 'old lady' smell eminating from her rooms.

Apparently, the official name for old person smell is nonenal. It was identified by the Japanese.

The skin has antioxidant defences which naturally weaken with age. This antioxidant protection disrupts the effect of the oxidation of lipid acids on the skin’s surface. As it declines, it can no longer prevent the oxidation process, so the acids that are broken down create a chemical called 2-nonenal or old lady smell.

Not all old people will have the smell.

Apparently, persimmon soap can help to eliminate the smell. You can buy it quite cheaply on Amazon

I was not aware of this but thought it would be useful to pass on to Gransnetters.

No offence intended smile

Good old mumsnet, When they are grans they may have more empathy. Poor mother.
As for fanny soap, its my understanding that soap should never be used on or in, that part of the body.
What a charming daughter.

I did put old person smell in the heading and in the text

This part of my post was actually a quote I found online - 'The skin has antioxidant defences which naturally weaken with age. This antioxidant protection disrupts the effect of the oxidation of lipid acids on the skin’s surface. As it declines, it can no longer prevent the oxidation process, so the acids that are broken down create a chemical called 2-nonenal or old lady smell'.

I can't understand why some Gransnetters are so touchy. Personally, I was happy to learn about persimmon soap. I don't need it at the moment but am glad to know for the future.

😂

I hope to goodness my DD or DIL don't give me any Fanny soap.
Although one gave me lavender cosmetics and another lemon. Are they trying to tell me something?

Ps sometimes losing your sense of smell might be a blessing, not a curse!
I'm just off to sniff DH.

68 is not old from where I sit pink cosmos, I was still middle aged then, it took a few more birthdays til I accepted I was actually old. grin

Georgesgran that made me literally LOL! grin

silverlining48 Tue 15-Jul-25 15:05:44

But hopefully not smelly… wink

Elusivebutterfly Tue 15-Jul-25 15:07:08

Apparently nonenal is more common in men than women. It often starts in middle age and men's hair can be the main problem aggravated by sweat and grease.

Agh!!!!

...and there was me noticing all the YouTube type stuff that comes up talking about this and thinking "Nonsense! Why on earth would there be an old person smell" (yep "person" and not "woman").

Don't say it really does happen?!!!

Great - not! Not some other aspect of my body that might get more troublesome and expensive to deal with as I get older....

.....and how would I even know (given that most of my sense of smell went during Covid and I've not got it back yet.....who knows when that will be?).

We've touched on this subject before.
I've been in the car with a couple of my mum's old friends and actually felt as though I was going to throw up .
They stank .
I found out that they didn't consider a daily bath or shower essential and rarely washed their knitwear .
Hair shampooing only seemed to happen at the hairdressers
Unfortunately for me the slightest off smell has a dramatic effect on me !
Pomegranate soap isn't cheap .
I used lavender soap and cologne on my mum and she always smelt very nice .

Nannynoodles Wed 16-Jul-25 14:12:37

My d-i-l suggested that I stopped using lavender washing capsules because they gave off “old lady vibes”.
I must admit my Nan always smelt of Yardley lavender!.
Shame though cause I quite liked it.

Granmarderby10 Wed 16-Jul-25 14:17:02

Basically it is the smell of our body breaking down.

And Since more people are living longer this means that with good fortune all the current pubescent kids with there sickly Lynx drenched armpits (not just armpits in fact now) and
Impulse Body Sprays etc will have longer to experience this phenomenon for themselves.

Perhaps they’ll have come up with a solution by then eh😧

Lollin Wed 16-Jul-25 14:24:34

I’ve have been aware of this for decades and so am grateful for this being raised - it is enlightening. We can all smell without realising it, I had to drill into my own, to open their windows daily! Like esmay I too have always ‘suffered’ because I have a strong sense of smell. I’m hoping I keep the possibility of developing that old person smell away.

Redhead56 Wed 16-Jul-25 14:33:09

Hilarious the bar of soap if it’s true, what does the old person smell like does anyone know?
