Arguments for puberty blockers

I’m no expert but I seem to remember reading something about them being used on young females who want to be male. Taking the blockers stops the growth of breasts, making it easier to become a ‘male’ once they reach maturity.

You are right - but how on earth can a pre-teen ever make informed consent.

Watching my grandchildren grow up - now 21 and 25 - it is clear that they do not know who they are for a number of years and in fact an adult brain is not fully mature until 32.

My eldest grandchild is transitioning but nothing started before the age of at least 20. I just hope s/he knows what s/he is doing ( 24 now).
I think this new trial is proposed for early teens- not old enough to open a bank account, someone said, far too young in my view to consent to something so major.

I think young teens do not know what they want for dinner.

They shouldn’t in my opinion be able to decide and take life altering drugs before they reach the age of majority.

It is intended to be introduced at 10 years old.

I think for every child who is muddled about their sexuality, the vast majority end up happily in their birth sex.

I watched a friends teenage daughter who from her early teens was adamant that she wanted to transition to a male, she changed her name to male wore male clothing etc, etc, now in her early 20s she has completely settled in her birth sex, with boyfriend, in tow and in fact is very glamorous. Imagine if she’d persuaded the clinicians of her need to change gender! It would be a tragedy.

I find this subject very difficult to get my head round.

On the one hand you read about the intolerable misery some children experience feeling that they are born the wrong gender. On the other hand it seems to smack of child abuse to start pumping young children full of puberty blockers.

Anyone who pretended men could be women has a hand in this, anyone who dismissed women as bigots or hysterical has a hand in this. Of course puberty blockers are a terrible thing.

They amount to abuse and should not be given to kids.

Puberty blockers have one, and only one, valid use. And that's to delay puberty for children suffering precocious puberty. They can be used to delay puberty to a more appropriate and consistent age, about 8-9 in girls, 9-10 in boys. Delay being the operative word, not as they have been used to avoid it altogether before going on to cross sex hormones, the combination of which may well lead to severe health problems and can cause sterility. Most children with precocious puberty who are treated with blockers will be on them for the shortest time possible and then only if they find puberty too distressing to cope with.

Yes Wes Streeting had the opportunity to not be on the 'wrong side of history' . He has missed that chance. There is a protest against the trial on the 17th Dec led by the LGB alliance.

Yes, I thought it would be about this, and that Wes Streeting was against puberty blockers for young children.
Therefore I am surprised (and shocked) that there will be a trial experimenting on young children, who, despite what they might say, are really not old enough to know for sure at such a young age.

As far as I am aware, this is the go ahead for a clinical trial to take place.

Nonetheless, it is still experimenting on young children, who, as GrannyGravy says do not know what they want for dinner and these guinea pigs could be pre-teens!

I can understand why families of trans have such strong feelings on the topic.

In the 1980s I lived near someone whose child was diagnosed gender dysphoric when very young. Even at 3-4, before starting school, it was clear that the formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria was not by choice. The parents were absolutely certain she would kill herself if left to develop and start menstruating.

I moved away and we lost touch, but they popped up on my Facebook some 20 years later, with a young adult pictured as their son. I wondered how the intervening years had been for them all.

I personally know two trans women, both have fully transitioned . Both knew as teenagers that they were in the wrong body and had a very unhappy life as teenagers and young people. One had several suicide attempts and the other resorted to drugs to deal with the pain .
However both say that puberty blockers shouldn’t be given to under 16s and definitely not 10 year olds .

There have been large numbers of children who went through the Tavistock and went on puberty blockers, most followed by cross sex hormones. Why not look at their outcomes instead of recruiting a whole new cohort of children for an experiment? Given that there can't be a 'control group' what worthwhile extra knowledge can be gained from exposing this new group?

I agree women cannot be a man, but a woman can feel more comfortable dressing and living as if they were a man.

How is that any different to the gender stereotypes being complained about on another thread?

Since I do not seem to have read the 'other thread', or not the key posts. I cannot tell.
