Ankles in this hot weather ☹️

I have one ankle that swells in the hot weather. The doctor said if both ankles were swelling that is more serious.

I know to elevate the ankle is a good idea. Any other methods to improve things please ?

My ankles have swollen too. One more than the other. I'm sitting with my feet up and with my Dyson tower fan on me. I'm being careful to keep drinking water. I'm circling my ankles too to keep them moving. Good luck with yours NanKate

Mine too and top of my feet! Try to elevate, drink plenty and exercise feet by circling and moving them up and down!

I suffer this too (in both ankles when it’s hot) and as well as the tips above, I don’t wear sandals with restrictive straps as that makes my feet join in by swelling too.

I have swollen feet and ankles anyway and this weather is exacerbating them. Lots of rest for me in between childcare and keeping cool.

Thanks I didn’t know about drinking plenty of water.

I will lie here and do a bit of circling.

I realise that this is probably swapping one discomfort for another but firm support tights stop my ankle swelling.

Yes this happens to me too. Feet swelling and ankles. It’s always in the hot weather. Or after being on an aeroplane.

My husband’s feet and ankles have swollen up the past few days. I have been telling him to drink plenty but you would think I am trying to poison him! I also put the end of his bed up at bedtime.

This happens to me but I was told it is quite normal. I just move around a lot and elevate my feet when sitting.

I have suffered for the last 10 or so years - wide flappy trousers and flight knee highs alas the only answer.

There was a very interesting radio 4 programme yesterday by the Two Doctors. Their guest was a Professor of Vascular Diseases and the Lymphatic System...I may have got her title wrong. She recommended flight socks. Wore them herself and recommended them for swollen ankles. It was worth a listen. Lots of helpful advice and information about the lymoh system.

Well my ankles went down overnight most likely due to my many trips to the loo after drinking all that water! It was exercise after all.

I’m sitting here wearing my tight ecco ankle boots (with 2 zips, so I can get them on and off easily), which is the only way I’ve found of making the swelling in my ankles (especially the left one, which I think I damaged as a child) go down. They actually swell up pretty much every night, all year round, but the swelling has nearly always gone by the morning.

if mine get bad i soak a towel in cold water and wrap my ankles for a while
usual exercises hydrate etc work as other people have said

Yes I get this even worse when I’m abroad.

Try lymphatic drainage. My ankles have been swelling up for a while and my legs looked pitted, so I had a treatment on holiday and I was amazed how slim and youthful my legs and ankles looked for 6 weeks afterwards! And how well I felt. (I'm 76). Effect has worn off now so am off for another treatment soon. It will be interesting to see whether I feel so well again, or whether it was mainly the holiday!

I have to wear medical compression socks for oedema, they are difficult to put on but are very effective. The renal dept. told my husband to cut down on salt as it causes water retention.

My hands swell more than my feet in hot weather so am sometimes unable to wear rings. When my feet swell in the heat I sit on the edge of the bath and let cold water run on them - lovely!

.

Hydration is always important, but even more so in hot weather and climates.

At least 2 litres of water a day is recommended.

I always use two 330ml cups, filled at the same time, as it is easier to keep track.
Three refills and I know that I've hit the minimum. Sometimes an extra one 'for luck'.

(I do add a dash of Robinsons 'No Added Sugar' Apple&Pear squash as I'm not fond of the taste of plain water and I don't drink tea or coffee)

I still wear my medical tights even through the hot weather, or my feet and legs swell and is bad for my health. It’s one thing or the other to choose from, oh and put your feet in a bowl of water when sitting down even with the tights on.

Two litres of water a day is a massive amount. I think the research, from way back, included food in the total consumption, and lots of foods - lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, apples, pears etc etc - do include water too. I am absolutely fine with one litre, even on very long, hot walks....but maybe people differ in their needs.

My ankles get swollen in the hot weather, I believe some smart person coined the name "cankles" where the calves and the ankles seem to become one shock I think I have some level of distinction between the two, as I sit on my patio with my feet immersed in a bucket of cold water with a few ice cubes. A kind of upside down ice bucket challengegrin

I drink a lot of water.

I have one leg that is much bigger than the other.
I can't get any of my sandals on, and they are velcro straps doctor martins, so pretty hefty.

4allweknow Wed 27-May-26 17:30:06

Yes, water is important but don't forget your consumption includes the water in your food.
