Looking for Nightie with Hood

I'm looking to buy a nightie with a hood for my 87 year old mum who gets cold at night in bed. We got one a few year's back which she loves but could really do with another. I can't find any online that aren't fleece. She doesn't want fleece for sleeping in.

Anyone help with suggestions or seen any in shops around your own town? It can't be an unusual problem so what do people do to keep head warm at night?

I fold an old cotton Laura Ashley shawl into four and fling it over my head.

When I used to camp with scouts, I wore a woollen pull-on hat at night (and often most of the day too). Perhaps a nice beanie hat would work for your mother? You can get cashmere ones nowadays.

Well you learn something new everyday. I had no idea such a thing existed. A hat made of a thin material would perhaps do the same job.

I'd have thought a hood was a bit of a safety risk in that it could get twisted around the neck if you toss and turn at night!

I agree that a hat or beanie would probably do the job. Websites that cater for chemo patients and those who have lost their hair for whatever reason supply all types of 'indoor' headwear.

What about a small electric heater in the bedroom for when the temperature drops really low. I think you'll find it's not too expensive.

That would also keep the room warmer if/when she got up in the night.

She's using a headscarf some nights which I worry is more dangerous than a hood attached to a nightie. She's actually got a heater in her bedroom which is controlled by a remote so she can switch it on from her bed -,it's really good. She doesn't want it on all night though as has asthma and finds the room gets too stuffy. Maybe a chemo site will have something suitable.

I don't have this problem - with me it's my nose! I am seriously thinking of crocheting a woolly nose warmer!!?

Husband wears a balaclava on cold nights. He feels the cold more than me - less hair!

Ana Sun 11-Dec-16 14:42:35

Strangely enough, I've just been out to the shops and while driving back the thought of a balaclava came to me in connection with this thread - that would cover the neck area as well!

Might be a bit too restrictive though...

Tricia...... did your DH used to be in the SAS? tchgrin

ninathenana Sun 11-Dec-16 16:28:19

tchhmm not a problem I've ever come across.

Oh shame, I thought I'd found one, then saw no fleece - this seems a bargain though!

JD Williams have a fine jersey hooded nightie. Only seems to come in charcoal though.

Oh, as a claustrophobic the thought of a nightie with a hood or a balaclava in bed is making me hyper-ventilate!

Do people not have central heating?

thatbags Sun 11-Dec-16 17:54:43

I thought having heating on at night was only something Americans did. Or, to out it another way, the only people I've everknown to have heating on at night were Americans.

TriciaF Sun 11-Dec-16 18:28:20

grin - rosesarered - no he wasn't in the SAS but he used to go off backpacking in the wilds of Scotland when he was a bit younger.
I sometimes went with him, but not in cold weather.

Ana Sun 11-Dec-16 18:31:51

It must get very cold in your bedroom, Tricia! shock

TriciaF Mon 12-Dec-16 18:32:13

Yes it does, Ana - even SW France can have weeks of freezing temperatures in Jan-Feb. and we have centralheating but never have it on in the bedroom.
To go back to the OP - maybe we've missed the point that a really elderly person (I'm nearly there) has poor circulation, and does need extra protection in cold weather. So perhaps needs extra heating in the bedroom, as well as maybe a woolly hat.

Ah that was kind of you seaclif - unfortunately it's fleece like one my sister got her - she did try but doesn't like it. !

GrannyA11i Mon 12-Dec-16 20:31:56

katek. I've just searched JD Williams but can't see any hooded jersey nightit? It sounds perfect though!

petra Tue 13-Dec-16 11:33:56

GrannyA11i Do you know someone who is handy with a sewing machine. Design what you want and get them to run it up.

GrannyA11i Wed 14-Dec-16 00:36:43

Petra - yes me! Could be a last resort!!

TriciaF Wed 14-Dec-16 17:18:42

GrannyA11i - you can get silk balaclavas online, which are surprisingly warm.
Motorcyclists wear them under their helmets.
