I came across this tip today: Keep brown sugar soft by putting a couple of marshmallows in with it.

Has anyone tried that? Does it work? I don't want to buy a whole bag of marshmallows for nothing grin

I've never had any brown sugar go hard, but I'd better buy some marshmallows, just in case......?. And some drinking chocolate, perhaps......

I put a damp tea towel over the bowl and leave it for a while it works well.

I put opened brown sugar in a plastic box with a slice of brown bread. Keeps it soft and I'm not tempted to eat it! grin

I do it. It works. Even thumping with a rolling pin had failed to work on ancient brown sugar, so I gave it a go a year or so ago and it does the job.

The rest of the bag of marshmallows is still in the cupboard. Any suggestions about what to do with those? grin

No it just dries out, i had thought it would absorbed any moisture and go mouldy, but apparently not.

10 seconds in the microwave softens it up. Still have lumps but they are easier to crush.

You could make rice crispy squares,grandchildren love them.Also if you use large marshmallows you can cut out petals for cake decorating,With the marshmallow on its side cut across ,4 times and each piece forms a petal,if you use small coloured marshmallows you get pretty tiny flowers for cupcakes ( spray scissors with oil to prevent sticking) Good luck !

I do that all the time with marshmallows - I put the leftover brown sugar in a plastic container and add a bunch of marshmallows on top. Great trick.

Sorry, bmteal - I think that's the Marshmallow plant, which sadly no longer has any connection with the confectionery! But thanks for the tips, everyone. Next time I buy a pack of marshmallows to go on top of my cappuccino I'll try putting a handful in with my "soft" brown sugar.
