Dyson versus GTech - any opinions?

Some of these replies seem to be about corded versions rather than cordless, so not comparing like with like? I think otherwise this is going to be very much down to personal preference and worth brandishing them both in a showroom! I’ve used both Dyson cordless (I think it was the V6) and GTech for village hall and committee room cleaning. I much preferred the Dyson, found it better on carpet but couldn’t tell the difference on hard floor. The GTech gives me hayfever every time so perhaps the allergen retention isn’t as good. Yes yes to MrsMopp’s suggestion about looking up Which?

I just had a look at the Lakeland website as I trust that company. They don't sell Dyson. They sell the Shark for £45, the Morphy Richards for £99 and the Gtech Air ram for £200. They each have customer reviews on their website Lakeland.co.uk to help you decide. Worth going to the shop if you have one near. Staff very helpful too.

There is also a Gtech power sweeper for £70. Maybe if you live in a larger property then the Air ram might be better. My friend got one of the cheaper ones just to keep upstairs and very happy with that. My old Dyson is far too heavy now (not cordless) so I would probably go for the Air Ram.

I have just bought the Gtech upright which was on offer with the cordless hand held for stairs etc for £299, after having seen it advertised on TV. I had the Dyson V6 before and must say I much prefer the Gtech. What I didn't like about the Dyson was I had to have a wall mounted bracket put up to charge it. The Gtech has a cube shaped battery that you can just pull out and charge separately if you want. Much less faff. The Dyson was full just doing one or two rooms as well as the battery losing charge quickly. I was able to do my 2 bed house on one charge and not having to empty the Gtech. It was also very light to manoeuvre around. I would recommend the Gtech any time, but then I only had the slimline Dyson not the upright one so cannot comment on that.

I've got a Shark and love it (inasmuch as you can love anything to do with cleaning!). Wouldn't buy a Dyson because of his Brexit stance

We bought a Dyson V6 two years ago. We looked at reviews for GTech at the time and they were good but a few people said they broke down after about a year however GTech were very good about replacing them. So we decided on the Dyson. It is very convenient and I would never go back to a corded vacuum. There are some annoying things about it though, mainly that it is a pain to empty. The dust and fluff sticks to a tube in the centre of the cylinder and we have to use a carving fork to remove it; this happens even if there is only a small amount in it. Although it says in the handbook the filter needs cleaning monthly we have found it needs doing weekly or it starts to make a pulsing noise. It says just run the filter under a tap to clean it but this doesn't remove all the debris and unless you take it to pieces and remove the debris inside the filter will needcleaning again in a few days. It is also very hard to take the filter to pieces. Dyson have now upgraded their cordless vacuum to a V8 and I believe GTech have changed their design substantially.

While channel hopping one evening I came across a Shark cordless vacuum on one of the shopping channels. It does look very good and has excellent reviews so when the Dyson gives up the ghost we will probably try a Shark, Paddyann seems to like hers.

In conclusion I do think that considering how expensive they are Dyson are over-rated and not without their problems.

A Bosch, if you watch Amazon you can get one for a good price.

Fourormore....G Tech all day long. Never regretted my purchases with them. Especially the vacuum ... it does EXACTLY what it says on the tin!! So light you can lift it with two fingers...easy to empty and I’ve got the original that doesn’t slide out!! Well worth the money. Dysons are ugly!

I adore my Gtech Air ram. Picks up dog hair better than anything I've ever had! Also their customer services are amazing. I rang with a problem after around 18 months of usage and after a short conversation with them they arranged for a brand new main unit to be with me the next day. (I kept the handle, the battery and the dust compartment) It's still going strong 2 years later. Will give it to my youngest when he moves out later in the year, so I can get the new updated model!

Gtech any time! Love mine. I bought it on the spur of the moment, about 10pm, and it arrived next day!!!
Do get the hand held for the stairs if you can, I've not got one of those and it's a pain trying to keep the stairs clean with the old hand held thing I have.

Love my gtech I've had Dyson in the past but not cordless however my sister-in-law has 3 golden retriever dogs said gtech wasn't as good as the Dyson she has just purchased

On to my second Dyson now, love it apart from fact that only holds charge for about 15 mins of 'hoovering', supposed to be longer but both machines the same. Will try G-tech next time,

I used to love my Dyson - that's until I got a Gtech!
It's so supremely easy and quick to use - no flex to manage, glides over all surfaces, extremely light and manoeuvrable - in short, a dream to use. Again, with the handheld devices, the Gtech gets my vote - much lighter, has a light on the front to illuminate what you're doing, and a switch that you don't have to keep compressed, as with the Dyson.

I love my ha d held Dyson. So much easier than dragging a big cleaner around, my only complaint is the 20 minutes cleaning time per charge. I have to clean really quickly or arrange to only do half the house at a time.

a few years ago, when I was having my old hoover serviced, I asked the man who did it what he thought about a Dyson, as I was considering getting one - he said he had more Dysons in for repair than any other make - that put me off ever getting one! (Incidentally I went to a charity 'function' at the Dyson's house a while back, and if I remember correctly there were no carpets in any of the rooms we went into (loads of marble floors though). Food for thought?!!

I wouldn’t be without my Cordless Dyson. Highly recommended.

Forgot to say - it cleans for 40 minutes without charging.

any comments on the battery life.?
a replacement costs almost as much as an entire new machine
Have had a couple of Dysons but would nOT buy another because of the battery life and the firm's blandishments when I commented on the relatively short-lived battery.... specialoffer... pay almost as much as the first time round for a replacement battery

I love my Dyson V6 but find the dust capacity a bit too small. We have cats and I find the little compartment fills really quickly and because the dust compacts I find I am having to dig it out with whatever is to hand. Not great if you have allergies.

For me G tech every time. Have used a Dyson but it was so heavy. The G tech is really light. Takes no effort at all!
I also have the G tech multi which has various attachments so you can clean without bending. It really has been life changing.

I bought a Shark two months ago as we have a golden retriever puppy and I was advised that Shark was the best. I have a Dyson as well which is great but not as good as the Shark which is lighter and easy to use and gets into the corners. So now I have the Dyson upstairs and the Shark downstairs.

I have the cordless Dyson and I love it. It’s very lightweight and does a brilliant job, both on carpets and hard floors. Previously, we have had the big, heavy Dyson. Hubby still drags it out as he sometimes prefers it, but I stick with the cordless. I haven’t used the Gtech, but I highly recommend the re-chargeable Dyson.

Love my Dyson V8 Absolute, the house has never been so clean. We live on three floors so I dreaded lugging Henry out from his cupboard and up and down the stairs. Now its a doddle.

We've a GTech which we bought from Lakeland a few years ago. In fact it's our second as the first had a problem. (The filter section wouldn't fit back properly, when cleaned). Lakeland immediately gave us a brand new GTech and this has been fine ever since. My advice is to buy from Lakeland! (I have absolutely no connection to the company except as a customer.) We love the G-Tech and have no hesitation in recommending it. But be sure to buy extra filters so that you can have a set in use whilst a set is drying after cleaning.
