Dyson versus GTech - any opinions?

We need to buy a decent cordless vacuum as our upright is putting on weight and becoming to heavy to handle!
I see wonderful ads for both Dyson and Gtech each stating they are the best etc. and are prepared to get what we pay for, but before we spend what to us is a considerable amount of money I would be grateful for any opinions!
We are looking at the D7 which seems better than the D6 but do you believe the ads and the salesmen .....!
Have you bought either of these and found them great or terrible?
Have you bought a different make (e.g. Shark?) which was better?
Any advice or experiences you've had would be gratefully received! Thanks!

I have been told that with a Dyson you have to hold the button down all the time. The on switch I think. Couldn't do that with my hands so considering a G tech but does anyone know how it compares to Shark?

I wonder if anyone has looked at a Which report on both the Gtech and the Dyson? The library keeps copies of Which. Might be worth a look for an honest review?

My husband loves the GTech, we have the upright as well as the hand held, which you need for stairs. As a matter of interest some time ago I was talking to the local shop about repairs - think it was the office Henry at that time - and he told me his workroom was full of Dysons! Our GTech replaced my beloved Sebo which I always thought was the greatest vacuum cleaner - but it just got too heavy for me to lug around, I find the GTech ideal as I can carry it even upstairs without any difficulty.

I got a Dyson 7 years ago, and praised it to high heaven, no problems with it, but it has now become too heavy for me. Last year I treated myself to a GTech and love it! So light and easy to manoeuvre, and does a great job. So good I bought one for my elderly mum.

My shark beats my dyson every time - even my DH loves it lol

I loved the GTech so much bought a second one for upstairs! Also handheld for the stairs etc. Makes vacuuming so much easier. Have recommended to lots of friends too.

Useful thread, as I am also looking for a new vacuum. My OH came home with a Henry as someone had recommended it, but it’s really hard work to use, and very heavy. Not impressed at all.

Tried them all and decided that the best is Mielle. They are costly, but well worth it. The cordless ones don’t last long enough on one charge to do my house, only good enough for a quick tidy up. Wouldn’t go back to the dysons that I had for years before I got this Mielle

I have a Shark and it's fab,

Absolutely love my Gtech, I've had it about 2.5 years now and my old Henry is now languishing in the garage - I kept it thinking I would need it 'for something' but I ended up buying the hand-held gtech too.
Such an improvement over the Dyson I had a few years ago. My neighbour who has the latest Dyson sighed with envy when she pushed mine about for a few minutes (to be honest I can't remember what she said was the big difference) and said she wanted one.

I had a Dyson but found it heavy and "wobbly" to manoeuvre. I've been using an Air-Ram for years now and love it. Light, easy to recharge, the handle retracts for easier storage and no need to buy filters. You just pull the sponge filter out and tap the dust off. The switch went wrong on my new one, so a quick phone call and they replaced the whole base unit immediately-- all I had to do was click the old one off and the new one on. Easy! One very satisfied customer.

I am thinking of buying a cordless vac. My Henry is so heavy now. My d has a cordless dyson and said it’s great.

Been looking rather enviously at the GTECH but I have had a Henry for years, and I can't bring myself to 'dump' him smile

We have a Dyson (not cordless) and the two Gtech cordless. I love the little hand held one and use it on stairs and upholstery. The Dyson is too heavy for me although the tools on it are good for edges etc.

I have a new Dyson and love it. Much lighter than previous models (my third one). Just to throw a spanner in the works, my daughter in law has a Shark and that's great too. I got a really good deal on my Dyson, otherwise I may have been tempted to try that.

I have had Dysons for years and have never had any problems with them, easily the best I have ever used. Last year my husband bought me the V6 cordless and this is great as I can easily do the stairs now and it means I do not have to get the bigger Dyson out all the time. We all have our preferences but for me, it is still Dyson.

Had a dyson for years, but it was getting heavy to take upstairs.
Now have a Gtech air and also the hand held vacuum.
It's so much better for ease of use and carrying it upstairs is a doddle.
I would highly recommend the Gtech over the dyson any day.

I have an upright Dyson, my second in twenty plus years. Can't fault the cleaning or reliability BUT it weighs a ton and the attachment tube is so strong it's always fighting to get back to the main unit. Having tried my daughters cordless Dyson, it was excellent but you have to have it docked to the charging unit on the wall and I didn't want it on show. I also wanted a vacuum that would go under my low bed without having to move it. After talking to Gtech to check all that I opted for theirs and it's brilliant, just wish I'd bought the hand held for the stairs at the same time as I won't now get it on offer now. It's easy to empty, has a light for dark corners, the suction seems as strong as the big Dyson, it goes down flat for under low furniture and the handle will shorten too. Charging is easy, just bring it out of the cupboard and plug in to any socket, no need for a permanent dock fixed to the wall. I would say though that you really need the upright and the hand held for stairs and small nooks and crannies. I'm going back o have to spend more to get that now.
By the way, I have a Henry too but that lives in garage for outside cleaning. Too heavy for indoors.

GTECH for ever! My life has been transformed since I got rid of the Dyson which, I decided, had been constructed from lead weights! I race up and down the stairs with the GTECH suspended from one ladylike finger and have turned into such an enthusiastic 19 50s like ad for the thing, that most of my friends now have one, and GTECH should be paying me a salary.

I hated my Dyson - I was always having to unclog it!

grannytotwins Sat 13-Jan-18 10:53:56

Some people are commenting on Dysons that are the plugged in version. I got rid of mine as it was becoming too heavy. I now have the cordless Dyson and I don’t think it could be beaten. It’s so quick and easy to use. I can do a four bedroom house on one charge and it’s perfect for the stairs. Worth every penny.

I think it depends on whether you hsve pets and how many. Do you have lots of visitors with children? How often do you vacuum?
You need to look at the voltage not the wattage. Mine is a cheap cordless, 29.9v and fits into a small space. It has a part that disconnects to be hand-held and two levels of suction. Also two tools for nooks and crannies and soft furnishings. Takes 3/4 hrs to fully charge and continuous use at lower suction is 45 minutes and 30-35 at the higher level. I have cream carpets throughout but wood flooring in kitchen and it is 100% in both. Also has lights on the 'foot' so you can be sure of getting all the bits from dark places. I gather you are looking at the more expensive end of the market but, no matter the cost, you only get a 1 year guarantee. Mine's a Morphy Richards Turbo (red) 29.9v and cost £69.99 when it first came on the market in Jan '17. Bought from Robert Dyas and got another 10% off after buying through Topcashback bringing price to £55. Got rid of cumbersome Vax. If I bought 1 a year it would only work out at £1.06 per week.

I was lucky to win a Shark recently in a GN competition. I already had a Dyson so can compare the two.The Dyson is lighter but holding the switch down is awkward and the hand held alone does not have enough power when cleaning the carpets in the car.
The Shark is heavier but is more powerful and does a better job in hand held mode. It also has a removable battery and a spare so longer cleaning time if needed. A range of accessories came with the Shark but I had to purchase Dyson accessories separately. To my mind the Shark wins!
