What tog duvet do you use for the winter.

I've always bought 13.5 but wonder if I really need such a high rating?

silverlining48 Thu 08-Aug-19 19:27:51

We have 4.5 throughout the year.

Auntieflo Thu 08-Aug-19 19:32:04

Same as silverlining, but, in this heat, just a cotton bedspread, or just a sheet.
In the winter, a fleece throw to pull up if needed.

Coolgran65 Thu 08-Aug-19 19:34:40

We use a 10.5 tog all year. Just throw it back if too warm in summer.

GrandmaKT Thu 08-Aug-19 19:35:38

We have a 4 seasons duvet. 4.5 for the summer and 10.5 for the winter. If it's really cold, you can clip the two together - but we've never needed to!

SalsaQueen Thu 08-Aug-19 19:55:54

I use a 4.5 duvet all year round! In winter I put a throw on top.

SpringyChicken Thu 08-Aug-19 19:59:26

We use pure down duvets for our bed, the 9.0 tog for winter, 4.5 for summer. It's too warm to ever need them clipped together. On the spare bed, the same tog duvets but synthetic. The down duvet is much warmer that than the synthetic one for the same tog rating.

We have a 13.5 tog down one in the winter because we sleep with the window open.

fizzers Thu 08-Aug-19 20:37:30

I'm like kittylester 13.5 tog and the window open

RosieLeah Thu 08-Aug-19 20:46:08

I use a 13.5 in the winter, along with fleece covers. Lovely and cuddly!

Charleygirl5 Thu 08-Aug-19 21:21:58

I have a 15 tog duvet all year round- I just remove for an hour or two when it is very hot.

I always take a hot water bottle to bed for most of the year and I add a blanket or whatever when it is really cold.

DanniRae Thu 08-Aug-19 21:28:47

10.5 for us in Winter

grannyqueenie Thu 08-Aug-19 21:40:48

A 4.5 one for as all year round, but it’s so old and well washed now I doubt it’s anything like that tog level now. Windows open almost all year round but we do have a fleecy throw for winter if my old boy gets cold!

M0nica Thu 08-Aug-19 22:01:15

Do you all leave the heating on all night? I need a 13.5 tog duvet in winter. We like to have a cool to cold bedroom but warm bedding.

grannyqueenie Thu 08-Aug-19 22:40:46

Heating on all night...heck no, I would just expire! Radiator is on lowest setting in the bedroom and goes off about 8pm anyway. I would probably have it off in the bedroom but I like to wake up in a warm (ish) room!

kittylester Fri 09-Aug-19 06:22:05

Our heating is off overnight unless the temperature drops below 5 degrees. It comes on at 5.30 as we usually wake up at 6am.

shysal Fri 09-Aug-19 07:39:39

I am a hot body so sleep all year round with just a sheet to cover me, and the window open. I do possess a 1 tog duvet but find it too hot even in the coldest weather.

I would love the comfort of a fluffy duvet to snuggle under, but it is not to be.

daffodil07 Fri 09-Aug-19 07:42:19

I feel the cold & watching tv during the cold winter months I'm always wrapped up in one of those fleeces! However, at night we always have the bedroom window open (my idea) and snuggle under at 13.5tog cozy duvet. Couldn't sleep any other way.

Auntieflo Fri 09-Aug-19 07:51:01

M0nica, I had to get the duvet out of the wardrobe to check on it's TOG rating. It's actually a 3 TOG, old and very well washed, so the label wasn't too clear. We can't sleep under the 13.5 TOG one!
Our heating goes off round about 9.30 - 10.00 pm and comes on again at 6.45 am.

BlueBelle Fri 09-Aug-19 08:08:07

I have two winter weight duvets one on top of the other plus a hot water bottle but I live in a Victorian house with no central heating and I sleep alone makes a lot of difference

BlueBelle Fri 09-Aug-19 08:10:15

charlirgirl I too have a hottie bottle most of the year round my feet are always cold My youngest daughter does too

sodapop Fri 09-Aug-19 08:13:31

Same as fizzers no heating, open window and 13.5 tog duvet. Bliss.

overthehill Fri 09-Aug-19 09:18:34

Springychicken you have sort of answered my main reason for writing this.

A friend bought a duck down duvet and said how light and warm it is. She could even wash it in her machine.

This appealed to me so ordered two. However, I made a mistake and ordered goose feather and down. Not light at all, heavy and they rustle. They do the job but thinking of changing yet again....the money I've spent on bedding I'm not happy with...so was wondering if 10 tog down will do. Think it might now

arosebyanyothername Fri 09-Aug-19 09:31:31

We have 4.5 all year round with an extra throw in winter if necessary and just a top sheet when really warm in summer. Since we downsized to our current house we’ve found we don’t need anything higher. We used to have 10.5 and 13.5 but they’ve all gone

Our heating goes off at bedtime and we’re never cold.

M0nica Fri 09-Aug-19 10:06:23

Of course the quality of the insulation in your house will make a difference to the heat loss overnight, so even if everyone's heating went off at 10.00pm, there would be an enormous variation in the internal temperature of the bedrooms at 2.00am, depending on the level of insulation.

Our house is 500 years old, we do have as much insulation as recommended in the loft but cannot replace the single glazed windows with double glazing and our solid walls are quite thin in places, although we have some internal wall insulation in the bedrooms
