I go to shops usually for what I need but due to circumstances I have had to resort to ordering some big items on line . What a nightmare, after this one I'm waiting in for with a tracking service that doesn't work it will be my last. It's too much stress, a parcel thrown over gate, despite me being at home.

Ordering on line
(35 Posts)Allsorts, not sure who you have been trying to use for these deliveries. You must complain about the one that was thrown over your gate, or just inform the company that IT NEVER ARRIVED.
I have to admit that I do use on-line for many purchases, and rarely have any real problems with them.
Do find the tracking systems only really work when the item is about ten or twelve deliveries away from me. Very useful then, as I can then actually watch to see when I am the next (or next but one), delivery. Then I am often actually sitting by the Main entrance to our flats, waiting for them.
Deliveries do have to take a photo of any delivery that is NOT actually into your hands, these people are often working under dreadful time restraints, so if you do not answer the front door bell pretty quickly, they do just leave it.
I have used online ordering a fair bit since the first lockdown. No problems so far. The drivers generally seem to be a friendly bunch. Only yesterday I had a big box delivered containing our new curtains, Service with a smile.
If the curtains were really creased Ladyleftfieldlover tell me how you managed to uncrease them. I’ve never had much luck.
I went through a phase where I had items delivered to a local shop which was fine provided I could carry them to my car. Larger or heavier items are delivered to my house.
I have an Alexa and she is very helpful, narrowing down the delivery time to around 2 hours but that is after the delivery fellow is up and running.
I used to moan about packaging-Amazon has listened to me and yesterday's ceramic heater arrived with no packaging. It was only on my front doorstep for seconds but that is not the point-anybody passing could see it and think that may be useful.
Not all delivery drivers ring the doorbell and have the cheek to say it was hand delivered when it was dumped.

Don’t give up. We all have a glitch now and then.
I started on line shopping over even years ago after hip replacement. Our son was working away daughter at uni husband running our business so I had no choice. I admit I had a few hiccups but I have to say I cannot complain. In lockdown the food delivery’s were most welcome. I should have share in a particular company who I cannot fault and they just keep getting better.
The biggest problem I have had was with Royal Mail putting cards through the door saying they couldn’t deliver my parcel. We have opened the door to them knowing full well they didn’t try to deliver a parcel it was still at the sorting office. DHL are the same we are never able to track parcels. I have learnt to not purchase from companies that use these delivery services.
Now I still order on line it’s much better than going to a store roaming around trying to find staff to assist with an enquiry.
I do most of my shopping online now. The couriers are a mixed bunch - Amazon, DPD and DHL are fine here but I groan when I hear it’s going to be Evri or ParcelForce. The latter have twice returned parcels to the sender saying they hadn’t been given a complete address - they had. Anything coming with the postman always turns up when expected, no problems. The only downside of online shopping is the amount of packaging to be disposed of!
I think it depends a lot on the company and the area.
I've generally had good service from Evri but, around here, Yodel is useless. Royal Mail is usually fine because we're rural and have a regular friendly postman who is really helpful. When he's off, his replacements aren't always as reliable.
It's a case, I think, of trial and error to see which companies are OK in your area, then trying to stick to buying from places which use them and not the unreliable ones.
I order far too much online…?….but never have any problem with delivery..
I too do most of my shopping online. We went to look at TVs in a local shop on Friday and I said to my DH I think it must be over a year since he was in a proper shop.
Most deliveries require a photo of the parcel in the open door way I find except Amazon.
We are fortunate as all our delivery firms are great.
I have a steamer for getting creases out of curtains Juliet.

Guilty of that too.
Never had a problem.
I hadn't heard of Evri.
I have now, because they delivered a bag of compost to who knows where, and claimed I'd signed for it.

Evri is the new name for Hermes
Ah, thank you.
Well, I hope Mr B Strous is happy with my compost. and his plums wither
I've been buying things online for years and have been lucky to have almost no problems with deliveries. Just the odd glitch but nothing much.
The only delivery service I've had a problem with is DPD. They deliver my monthly Fishbox and have once left it at the back of the house next door. The photo was a puzzle as DH and I had no idea of the location. We had to search the local area.
I now have all my parcels delivered to my door.
I gave Amazon, DPD and Evri my What3words address.

Same here, the only problem we had was for a large order from Wickes, it was short delivered and we argued for months about a refund, I got it in the end, but I don’t think I’d go to them again.
All other deliveries have been fine.
I sell online and there are some companies I would never use. I dont like Evri (as theyc all themselves now) because they simply dumped 3 packages by my gate over the christmas period. None were addressed to me. I am too disabled to get them to the correct recipients further down the street and had to wait a few days until my nephew arrived. I would not want anyone doing that with my packages.
I also have had bad experiences as a recipient with Parcel Farce. I prefer to pay a bit more for one of the other couriers if I have the choice.
Most of my packages are international to the USA and I use Royal Mail tracked and signed which is picked up by the US postal site. I use click and drop to print the postage and Royal Mail collect from my door.
I sent a package by Fedex to the USA - it was picked up yesterday and delived about 30 minutes ago in NYC. You cant fault that for speed.

Charleygirl5 I recently ordered an airfryer from Amazon.
During the checkout stage I was told it would be delivered in its own box, which would reveal what it was, or I could select "Amazon packaging" which means they put the item in its own box inside one of their brown boxes, so no-one can see what it is.
Apart from supermarket deliveries during lockdown I don’t buy online. I prefer to see and feel the quality. I ordered some bamboo socks online but they were dreadful. I was embarrassed as they were a gift. Something electrical my dh bought was flung over our 6’ gates by Hermes.
If we don’t use our shops they will disappear and I think that would be a shame.
Some couriers are great and some are terrible. I had a year of problems with Hermes now Evri, so much so I refused to order from any company who used them. Then the local guy left and the new one is fine. So don’t give up ordering online, just order where your local carrier is good. They are not all bad.
I’ve bought online for the last four or five years, only a few problems, usually Yodel.
Our local Evri person has started a Facebook page which is very helpful,
Online is so much better for me. The thought of having to go to the shops fills me with horror!
I have been buying online for over 20 years and have had very few problems.
