East coast of Scotland, I’ve needed a cardi during the evening the last couple of days, wouldn’t think of putting the heating on yet. I was in St Andrews this afternoon, lots of people, not all young, wearing shorts and t-shirts. The three of us left our coats in the car.

Has anyone dared to turn their heating on yet?
(320 Posts)It's feeling a lot chillier tonight and the temperature is reading 17.5C in the flat and 16C in the annexe. Normally I would have put my heating on but I'm holding out! I might succumb at 17C and set the heating for 18C. I'm trying to be brave.
Have you switched your heating on yet? Are you holding out a bit longer? What will you set the thermostat for this year?
No not yet. No electric blanket either before October. Got long nighty out and cover on top of duvet but doesn’t stop nose being cold!
My 11 year old grandson went downstairs asking his mum to put the heating on as he was FREEZING
Stood there in T shirt and shorts. Just ordered them some dressing gowns!
Hard to believe the car thermometer was reading 28 on Monday! My cat has stolen my fleecy jacket.
I’m going to steal it back from him.
Oh, the quote hasn’t appeared. That was in reply to Prentice.

If our kids tried that, they'd be told that when they paid the heating bills, then they could dictate when the heating went on. Consequently, they used to sit and watch tv wrapped in their duvets.
Put our electric throw on tonight and filled hw bottle to watch TV. There has been a bitterly cold wind all day even though it was sunny. Got thermal socks out for bed. My oh said heating not going on until October (we use oil) also bought electric fire for lounge to use in winter.

I've nearly finished DGD2's jumper. Will she wear it?
Debatable! But then she never seems to feel the cold.

Mesh, nesh,What?
No! It’s 9° outside and 17.5 indoors at the moment, with the kitchen and upstairs windows ajar. I’m in shorts and have just pulled a fleece over my knees now I’ve sat down to watch the news.
By the end of October I’ll probably light a fire on cooler evenings but the heating won’t be on.
No central heating yet, but it’s a cold wind here on the coast facing the Irish’Ocean’. Cardigan on, heated throw, socks in bed and weighted blanket.
Not sure how long I will last without ch.
No heating on here. South East.
Well insulated house. Still wearing summer clothes and have the summer duvet on the bed. It's been a glorious sunny day today, with a breeze. I got very hot when in the garden cutting back the lavender after mowing the lawn. I doubt the central heating will be used before the end of October. Never needed to put it on earlier in the past, so I expect to follow the same pattern again this year, especially as it will cost more.

Oh she didn't put the heating on! He just went back up to bed.
It’s quite cold here in North Devon but I am in the middle of a terrace and thankfully my house holds its heat, it was built in the 50s when houses were built proper! ? as yet no need to put the heating on.. Dressing gown and throw over my knees, quite adequate for now
I felt cold today and it was 17C. It is 10C now but I am about to shower and go to bed with a hwb. I am seeing how long I can last out without switching on the heating so that should be interesting. Normally my well insulated house is at 18C.
I am lucky to be paying a "reasonable" fixed rate monthly until next July so I am trying to train my body for next winter also!

It's Midlands dialect and it means someone who feels the cold, kircubbin2000
We live in the south east but we are definitely feeling the cold. We have had the gas fire on twice this week, just whilst we watched the tv it was lovely. ?
This morning I came downstairs and found DH had switched on the heating in 2 rooms.
I’m afraid we have become southern softies ??
Not yet, I’ve got my eye on oil prices, hoping they’ll drop a bit, but if it gets really cold, I’ll give in
Also waiting for a load of logs to be delivered, that’s since June, and I keep reminding him!
I’m just off to fill my hot water bottle and snuggle into bed.
Bedtime and currently 23 degrees in my sitting room in the South of France. 21 degrees outside. Today is the first day since early June that we have not used the air conditioning and with 300 days annual sunshine and a well insulated house it's usually possible to do without any kind of heating until mid October. On chilly evenings after that we would light the log burner. We use summer duvets all year round and it's unlikely that we would change that or think to add another blanket to the beds until mid Winter. Central heating is normally switched on for a while in November - morning and/or evenings until the house is a reasonable temperature. The sunshine through the glass and then the wood burner maintains that temperature - all night if the weather is very cold.
We are very fortunate in that electricity here has been capped and even though EDF are squealing and attempting to sue the Government for loss of revenue ?, the Government is standing firm. The situation is clearly very worrying for everyone who needs to heat their home. Sharing ideas and plans on threads like this is going to be a great deal of help for many people trying to make energy ends meet. With luck the winter will be grey and mild, with luck some good news will be shared on Thursday or Friday when actual details of help and a mini budget has been promised. Fingers firmly crossed!
We have decamped to our holiday let as we had a cancellation, we awoke at 6.30 this morning as we were so hot, the last guests had set the heating to come on to a temperature of 23 degrees for 6 hours a day, they place must have been like a sauna!
I'm trying not to put any heating on yet so just wore my fluffy dressing gown over my clothes this evening.
It's darned chilly...
I can’t bear the cold. I have lung problems. So yes, my heating is on.
DH was chilly this morning and pressed various switches and fiddled with the thermostat. Turns out that the boiler just needed re- pressuring. So then we had to go and see if the radiators needed bleeding.
Timers all set and should kick in now if the mornings are colder. Have to keep DH happy, I do need my morning cuppa.
We shall see if it all works, but we do need to book it's annual service.
No heating for me yet - but I’ve thrown another dog on the bed!
Ours is always on, controlled by the thermostat and when I woke this morning after quite a chilly night, the heating had come on.
It has been a lovely sunny day today so it didn’t stay on for long. Then at some point this evening it cut in again.
Fortunately we are still on a fixed rate deal which comes to an end next spring, although with the financial help and measures already announced by the government, most people should be ok this winter.
Even lowering the thermostat by just one degree can result in quite a saving, without having the misery of a cold house.
