removing blood from white cotton sheets.

My best quality sheets have been stained with blood.

I sprayed initially with vinegar which spread the blood and washed the sheets after which left them just the same.
I then soaked them in bleach washed after this didn't make any difference.
After this I used a product which said whitener with stain removal powder, that didn't work either.
Any ideas.

Vanish Oxy Action ( in a pink tub) amazing at getting dried blood out of whites.

I use Napisan, the stuff you used to soak Terry nappies in. Soak over night then wash as normal, may have to repeat as the stain will have set. I have never been beaten with this even with badly stained table cloths.

A biochemist friend taught me to rub the area with a bar of soap, add a bit of cold water, fold the fabric and rub the two sides together. It's quick and easy and works every time for me. It does only work on stains that haven't been set by washing in hot water etc. though.

If they were new and unwashed the finish on them will have set the stain! Overtime it may fade

Cover blood with salt and cold water, let it soak then wash in hot wash

Try soaking in vanish powder in very hot water overnight

Even after washing, I have found a good quality hand bar soap works well. Dampen the area with tepid water and rub the soap over the stain, working it in with more tepid water until you see it beginning to loosen. Rinse in tepid water and do it again. When it is nearly all gone, leave the last lot of soap in the fibres and wash as usual. Don't use cheap soap but no need for your Christmas present one - just a good general one.

Soak overnight in the bath or large sink with Ariel
Always worked for me. You could then wash at 60 also with Ariel

Biotex is fantastic for all stain removals.

My mum always soaked anything with blood on overnight in salty water and I do likewise.

I have to agree, it is probably too late now but wetting the blood stain with milk and letting it soak for a short while prior to washing normally lifts out blood. You don't need pints of it - just enough to drench the area.

An Oxy active stain remover powder, I use it for all my washing, Had blackcurrant stains on white t-shirt, sponged it with cold water when it happened, put it with other clothes in machine and added scoop of Oxy powder with normal powder, I also add scoop of soda crystals/powder to all washes as it stops scaling etc, washed at 40 degrees, when done put on airer and stain came out with help of daylight, hence the Oxy (Oxygen) name. It works with blood too.

If you read the thread, the OP has solved the problem

Stain Devils very useful for dealing with specific stains. As is sunshine. Sometime repeated treatment needed.

If nothing works could you dye them if you tie dye pink or red it might not be noticeable.

I’d always used salt. Soaked in cold water.

I believe that blood stains must initially be soaked in cold water - putting straight into hot water will set the stain permanently.

After all the treatments you have done it could be the iron in the blood that is left
Good old Bar keepers friend attacks iron stains. Might be worth a try damp cloth pat in and leave
Good luck

blood stained cloth should be steeped in cold water that a good handful of salt has been dissolved in, rinsed then washed on a hot cycle with salt added to the washing powder.

I honestly thought all girls were told this by their mothers when they had their first period!

Dealing with blood stains can indeed be tricky!
Using cold water with an enzyme-based cleaner or hydrogen peroxide before washing often helps.
Have you tried any of these methods yet?

Mamma66 Sat 22-Jun-24 09:51:21

Try ‘Shout’ it is brilliant. It can be tricky to find but they usually sell it in Morrisons and sometimes in Sainsbury’s. For future references paste of bicarbonate of soda and detergent applied for ten minutes and then scrub in cold water. Then spray with Vanish and wash (not too hot though as hot sets the stain. Finally hang on the line on a nice sunny day
