We don't like Air Fryer chips

I have an all singing all dancing air fryer that produces dry, crisp chips.
We always thought we liked dry, crisp chips, but I've come to the conclusion we like soggy chips because the ones the air fryer produces are really so disappointingly dry they're tasteless.
Twenty years ago I had a tefal air fryer which only cooked chips (and a few other things like sausages) made lovely chips - but it died and my new Air Fryer which does everything does not produce nice chips - even with extra oil.
Do they make them any more?
Not even Amazon seems to supply one.

Ooh, that isn't the first time I've heard that, but possibly the first time on here.

I think a lot depends on the oven chips one buys or the potatoes. I buy crinkly chips now and these Airfry beautifully and are full of flavour but the large straight chips can be tasteless. (Might be a good idea to spray the chips with oil before air frying).

Albert Bartlet frozen chips are very good cooked in the airfrier. It's just a matter of adjusting the temperature and timings. Once you have perfected that..... perfectly cooked (not dry, overcooked) chips.

Do you mean the oven chips you can buy ready prepped, or do you mean chips you have cut yourself? I haven’t done the latter in my air fryer, but I have done the bought crinkle cut oven chips and find they cook as well as they do in the oven.

I don't have an air fryer. I merely scrub, cut the potatoes lengthwise fairly thin, them the other lengthwise. Soak in cold water, drain, soak in more cold water, drain, pat dry. Bake 240

Perfect every time.

Oh apology, I did not attempt to copy Aldom.

Multitasking gone wrong. sad

Is this brand available in the UK? If so I highly recommend them, they cook up nice and crispy in the airfryer, and also very tasty, best ones I have found.

ExDancer Tue 13-Aug-24 15:26:48

My DH won't entertain skin-on chips. grin
I do use frozen oven chips (because I'm lazy and at my age, 85, I feel to allowed to take all short-cuts available to me)
I'll try the crinkle cut ones and let you know, thanks.

I'd also be grateful if anyone can point me to a shop selling the old chip fryers - but not the really old ones we had with a basket and deep fat - remember those?

ExDancer Tue 13-Aug-24 15:36:33

Thank you Llamedos I've never seen those in UK. They look a bit like those thin matchstick ones we call French fries.

I've tried everything on offer I think. My last lot were Mc Cain, gastro, triple fried (!) - no difference. I'll look for Bartlett crinkle ones. Thanks.

I’ve only ever done home made chips in the air fryer.

They are absolutely fine. They aren’t a bit dry but I suppose that I am generous when I drizzle the oil and sea salt before cooking them.

Yes thats all we've done...homemade ones .
..we don't eat chips very often... but they were nice....we did salt and pepper chips like you get from a Chinese takeaway

I love my air fryer chips, it's changed my life.

Llamedos13 Tue 13-Aug-24 16:21:47

ExDancer, over here we call them shoe string fries and they aren't very nice, skinny and tasteless although McDonalds do make them tasty. The ones I pictured are regular size but its no help if they aren’t available!

I rarely eat bought frozen chips, but have tried a few brands and not been pleased. For some reason I find that air fried fresh things are better with added seasoning like garlic granules and/or paprika, although I don't like spicy food.

I saw a tip for using canned new potatoes dried off, cut into desired size and sprinkled with seasoning, flour and oil. They take about 30 minutes at 200C but are nice and crispy on the outside with soft centres.

Was your previous one a Tefal Actifry? There are lots on Ebay, but all pre-owned, and just one new one on Amazon for £299!

I’m a little over generous with the oil too WWM2. So easy to peel a couple of potatoes and much tastier.

I still have one of those - loads better than any other method.

I use Lidls Skin on Fries and Homestyle chips in mine, both come out fine.
McCain french fries are good as well, just take care not to overcook or they dry out and go hard.

I have yet to get my home made chips to work though. Have tried various things but never like the old oil fryer chips.

BlueBelle Tue 13-Aug-24 18:51:28

I do my own or use frozen salt and pepper chips and sweet potato chips all come out lovely in the air fryer

Jaxjacky Tue 13-Aug-24 19:00:59

I don’t have an air fryer either, I just cut up chunky, skin on chips, usually from Maris Piper, spray olive oil, sea salt and in the oven on 220 until they’re done, yum.

aggie Tue 13-Aug-24 19:13:35

I like Lidls deluxe chunky oven chips made from Maris piper potatoes , they are in a black bag in the freezer
I really fancy fireing up the Airfryer now !!,

paddyann54 Tue 13-Aug-24 19:14:23

I have a deep fat fryer mainly because my spoilt son only likes homemade chips .I bought it in Curry,s online ,I double fry my chips 60degrees then take out and dry off put them back in at 90degrees to brown and crisp.Makes great chips I have the bigger one ,my son is a gannet, but my late Mil had a smal one serving one and it was fine…except the basket was difficult to clean .

Gin Wed 14-Aug-24 00:21:29

Numerous posts on GN convinced me I could make good chips in an air fryer. I have bought one and the family say they do not taste half as nice as my old method of double deep frying on the hob. I am sure the air fryer version is much more healthy but we rarely have chips so will cook them the way we like.
I am surprised the majority buy frozen as they take up so much room in the freezer and cost so much more than a few spuds that can be peeled and cut in a few minutes. I suppose if you are short of time but I have plenty of that!

Charleygirl5 Wed 14-Aug-24 01:18:08

I do not like normal sized frozen chips cooked in my air fryer. I also like French fries and I buy the cheapest available. I never add oil to anything.
