No wonder people Fly Tip [hmm]

I hate fly tippers.
Where my daughter lives in West Yorkshire their local council provide a couple of skips about 3-4 times a year for locals to fill with bulky and heavy items they could not manage to get to the local tip. Works very well.
We have nothing like that in East Surrey. I have to display a permit on my car to use the recycling centre near me and there are discussions going on about getting people to make an appointment to tip their rubbish. That will only increase fly tipping in my opinion.
Do any of your friends and neighbours have a number of a reliable man who would dispose of your fridge/freezer in the correct way? He may be cheaper than the council's cost.

surely it would be best to check dates for pick up BEFORE putting the old one on the pavement. But should you not arrange for supplier of new one to remove old one on delivery, for a fee.

Got new fridge freezer, managed to put my other one outside my front door.
Went online to book bulky waste collection (normally they will pick up on none recycle days (mine was yesterday so missed it)

The next slot is...... 15th September! I thought that can't be right its over 6 weeks away. So I rang up and yes that is the nearest collection date. It's not in my way but looks unsightly for my neighbours.

In my area, if you can't book a convenient council removal, there are plenty of licenced rubbish removers, easily checked. Of course it must be paid for, as does our council. Better that than it being tipped in a country lane. Surely there must be business were you live that do this.

bikergran, I often see open back trucks in our area looking for scrap. Put a sign on it saying help yourself and hope they do.

Yes, we put something smallish outside because the scrap men come round and will take anything left on a front lawn too, such as children's bikes and scooters 😯

But, of course, they didn't come and a kind neighbour took it to the tip for us.

Usually, the form that delivers your appliance will take the other one.

However, the man who came to replace parts in our nearly new freezer left all the rubbish with us and we had to pay to have it taken away.

It should be a legal requirement to organise pick up and proper disposal at the point of sale.

Iam64 most metal scrap man don’t touch F/F you need a special licence as they are gassed.
bikergran I’d see if someone can take it to your council HWRC, probably for a few quid and check for the appropriate license, unless they’re a private householder.

There has been an old fridge freezer in a neighbours front garden for months.

I'm sure that the vegetation will soon cover it. I don't know if the council has been informed or not.

I think the regulations are designed to make people think about whether they really need to replace their appliances or not... or maybe get more creative with re-using their old ones.

I have just returned from a trip to the tip in the pouring rain. I was wet dirty and furious when I returned home. I had a bath as soon as I got in. I had to take my rubbish to the tip because the refuse collectors were unable to empty my bin because some *&\$ parked their car in front of it.

As they only collect household waste every two weeks it would have meant waiting a total of four weeks before it was next emptied. I agree there is no excuse for fly tipping.

If our bin doesn't get emptied we just have to phone up and tell them and they come back, usually the next day, sometimes the day after.

Agree there is no excuse for fly tipping. That includes blowing all the autumn leaves into heaps in the street, clogging up drains and causing wet, slimy patches when it rains.

I see red every time I see a woman near me with her leaf blower blowing all the rubbish from her garden out into the road. I pointed out to her she was fly tipping and she said 'Don't be ridiculous, it's just some leaves'.

AmberGran, my unpleasant next door neighbour used to blow leaves from their garden into mine. Sadly for him, his declining health has led to him employing a gardener who doesn’t do that

Once a year we can make arrangements I think for 4 bulky items to be removed for free. I made an appointment, places the items where wanted and it worked well.

Now, once a month for a few hours, a large bin is placed in a different part each time, and bulky items are removed.

When I buy a new fridge or washing machine, I only buy it if they will remove the old item, usually for a small fee.

I no longer drive, and my items, eg a plastic folding drying frame, are difficult to move. It is marginally too big for my bin so it will not be taken.

I’ve just paid £70 for an extra green bin, 40 per year, 30 for the bin set up. I have a lot of cutting back in autumn, green bin often full in summer mi the so it’s easier than endless tip trips

We've got an old fridge, working well, clean, in the garage but no-one wants it free of charge. It seems a waste to just send it to the tip.
More money than sense round here, methinks.

The wind blows everyone else's leaves into our garden!
There are some large trees, too, and the leaves pile up at the front door and garage door.

Even the other day, we were clearing dead leaves!

Exactly whaat you describe Sarnia is happening in the local authority I lived in until the beginning of the month.

They were placing more and more restrictions on what could be taken to the tip and now they too are saying it will be by appointment only and they will limit the number of times you can visit in a year.

Our previous home was surrounded by trees and was itself very leafy. Each autumn I would fill at least 15 big builders 1 cubic metre sacks with leaves I raked up. Far too many to compost. Disposing of those alone, would use up my annual allowance and more.

At the same time the council was complaining about flytipping! Are they incapable of seeing the link?

I’m also in Surrey and our neighbour whose a builder has to pay for a van licence to take stuff to the recycling centre. The other day the centre wouldn’t take wood he’d removed from a job . He’s got to go to another recycling centre who will take it . How many builders and tradespeople will do that ? It’s no wonder fly tipping is on the increase .

before covid we used to be able to take any rubbish to the local council tip anytime, now you have to book and also give your car reg number.
