Alternative to my Dyson

My Dyson is five years old, I have had to buy a new battery, two new heads and numerous filters and they are all expensive, I hate cleaning the thing, I thought you would just empty, but no, it has to be washed, dust gets into the crevices, two filters have to be washed and replaced, I think of my old Hoover upright with longing, I gave good old Henry, nothing cleans like he does but he's so heavy.
Any ideas please for something light, that doesnt rely on a battery and cleans carpets.

I bought a Sark cordless on the recommendations of this thread. It came with 24 hours from Shark direct. It’s brilliant and the best bit is that it automatically empties the canister into a bin on the charger. Thanks ladies.

And isn’t Dyson’s labour force now in the far east, working for paltry pay?

3,500 people in the UK work for Dyson.

Salaries for those working in the Far East are variable dependent upon area. Engineers in Singapore may earn about £30,000 - £40,000 pa, a senior manager considerably more.

Nothing comes close to a Henry. Mine is old and heavy but still the best vacuum by a country mile. I talk to mine as we go around the houseconfused

Absolutely agree. Just wish they were lighter in weight.

If Sebo so heavy that's out then, this is why people buy expensive stick vacuums I guess.
Cannot understand those that say Henry doesn't clean. It lifts carpets almost off the floor in full power. Just wish it was lighter mine is over 20 years old.

I don't lift or carry my Sebo; I push it along on its wheels. No effort at all.

I have a Shark lift away and love it, not too heavy for me.

Sebo is just a vacuum cleaner like most others, , but weighs a ton apparently. I thought Dyson w ere expensive (also heavy,) but Sebo tops that cost wise by about 100%.

I have a shark which is heavy and was £200. It was over my budget but my cleaner says it’s good so I won’t argue. I also have my mums old goblin cleaner, probably about 50 years old, not heavy, still working after all these years.

Have a Sebo upright cordless for downstairs and love love it.Must have had for 15 years now never gone wrong. As previous posters have said the only downside is it weighs a ton, so have a stick cordless Dyson for upstairs. In all honesty Dyson has never given me any trouble.I wash the filter once a month the same time run the battery right down, never had bother at all.
I had a Henry but never got on with it.Likewise a GTech.

I have a Shark Liftaway cordless and love it

Gets all the shed fur up from my two long-haired house cats. Good on both carpets and hard floors.

I have had a Dyson and hated it. I then bought a Sebo and love it, it is still going strong. I have also got a Vax rechargeable which is light and easy to use.

stopped considering Dyson when he pushed hard for Brexit then moved his entire op overseas! Miele are good, not cheap, but last for years.

My mother had a Henry which I used to vacuum her flat when I visited. I was never happy with the results and took my plug in Dyson over to hers one day. After the Henry’s use, the Dyson picked up a whole container’s worth of dust. I wasn’t surprised.

For years now I have had a cordless Dyson and, yes, its filters can be cantankerous, but is it very easy to use and very efficient.

Usedtobeblonde Sat 23-Aug-25 21:37:45

Both the cleaners I have had have used Henry’s, they must be good and reliable.
I gave my Dyson away and bought a Gtech, quite happy but myGD didn’t rate it really so we bought a Shark.
It cleans really well but sadly I can’t lift or manoeuvre it it is far too heavy so for my own use I bought the Gtech stick which I like, however a mains cleaner is better than a rechargeable for picking up.

Another GTech vote from me

Would not touch a Dyson with a bargepole. Overpriced and over engineered. You need a degree in something or other just to turn them on. His marketing was absolutely superlative though!

I like bagged machines - they contain the mess and have much better suction. I have a Sebo upright and a Miele cylinder. The boxes of bags also come with replacement filters, which remind you to change the things.

Hairy Retrievers are not conducive to machines with minimal capacity.

I have never used a Henry but all the workmen here seem to carry them around.

The downside of both my machines is that they are both very heavy. A breeze to use but you don't want to be lugging them up and down stairs.

I have a Hetty and I love it. Not sure if its lighter than Henry, but I think its his little sister so possibly.

LaTroisette Sat 23-Aug-25 19:41:39

Sebo are the best

silverlining48 Sat 23-Aug-25 18:56:23

Wow, just checked sebo prices. It must be wunderbar.

Lovetopaint037 Sat 23-Aug-25 18:10:09

Sebo. Have two. Brilliant German design. Keeps coming up as the best vacuum again and again on good housekeeping..Years ago saw this and asking at JL Peter Jones.on phone for a recommendation when really fed up with my Dyson. She said she wasn’t allowed to recommend but if it was any help when she wanted a vacuum she saw that the store used Sebos to clean
So she bought one. That was years ago and it is still going strong. Two years ago my sister in law saw it in action and bought one. She was so delighted with it that I bought another one for downstairs and have the older one upstairs. My SIL also bought another for upstairs.

TillyWhiz Sat 23-Aug-25 18:00:47

I too have a Sebo, very efficient, bags and filters easy to change.

cc Sat 23-Aug-25 17:37:26

Probably Shark for me next time.

cc Sat 23-Aug-25 17:36:14

I used to love my Miele Cat and Dog but now have an AEG cordless. The battery doesn't last very long on full power but it's light. I wouldn't go back to a cylinder cleaner but wouldn't tough a Dyson - I've had them before and they were useless in so many ways.

silverlining48 Sat 23-Aug-25 17:26:34

My dh told me that man at the tip told him that it’s full of dead Dysons, and we added ours to the collection. Expensive and clearly doesn’t last long.
We have a shark now. Recommended by our cleaner who comes every 2 weeks so I dont have to worry too much in between her visits. She is happy with it as she has one of her own.

Just remember Dyson supported Brexit. I can never buy a Dyson because of that betrayal.

I feel the same re Dyson. And I must add my support for the Shark cordless. But I don't have any carpets in this house and it is apparently better on wood floors than carpets so..
