An abundance of Autumn decor

In the garden centre this morning, there were lots of displays, and at least 10 shelves absolutely full of Autumn home decor, everything from table cloths to wreaths, artificial flowers and berries to pumpkin cushions, little fluffy owls to decorated china. You name it, if it had an Autumn vibe it was there.

I’ve got one small string of felt pumpkins which I put on a branch, some honesty from my garden, and when they are ready I will have a bowl full of ornamental gourds which I also grow, but that’s it. I think I’m getting left behind, because it looks as though everybody else must be decorating a lot more than I do. Is it younger people who are decorating like this, do your children, or do you?

Yes - my DDs have a stash of stuff for the seasons, plus it’s leading up to Halloween, which their little ones love - it’s a big thing where they live.
I don’t have anywhere as much, but currently, I’ve a big wreath of lavender and roses on my front door.
In October, I’ll swap to my Winter curtains, cushion covers and throws and stop buying lilies and roses, but buy Autumn coloured chrysanthemums instead. I’ve an autumnal leaf and pumpkin wreath for my front door and a similar garland for the fireplace. Come December, it’s the Xmas wreath on the door, Poinsettias inside and (as I’m not a lover of Xmas) then looking forward to spring blooms and hyacinths, when the curtains will be changed back and a tulip wreath on the front door.

It baffles me where people keep all this stuff out of season! Or maybe they bin it and buy new every year.

keepingquiet Sun 07-Sept-25 14:39:39

Some people will buy anything...

I thought of stringing up some dead leaves, costs nothing.

Georgesgran Sun 07-Sept-25 14:41:55

In bags in the bottom of one of my wardrobes Sue now that I don’t go in the loft much. I know the girls keep their stuff in their lofts - it’s mostly plastic tat, but it’s been coming out for years.

I know TK Maxx have had the Halloween offerings in for several weeks.I was looking for a summer wreath near the end of July ( bit late I know) and all they had were Halloween stuff. 😬

I have an autumnal wreath to put up soon and closer to Halloween I have a few Knick knacks and candles to put out.

I keep my stuff in plastic boxes in cupboards in a spare bedroom.

When did this become a ‘thing’ I don’t recall it years ago, or maybe I moved in the wrong circles. None of my close or extended circle of family and friends do it and the door wreaths - it used to be at Christmas only.
I’m with you keepingquiet..possibly!

One good tip I read in a magazine once, was to store cushion covers for different times of year, but keep the inner pads the same (so you’re not storing bulky cushions).

grandmadinosaur ..It’s yet another way of getting shoppers to part with their money.
Halloween stuff’s been in since about June! …seems some can’t get enough of it.
Hot on it’s heels will be the BIG C 🤦‍♀️

SueDonim Sun 07-Sept-25 16:04:20

I don’t really have room to store things in the few cupboards in the house. We’ve decided not to use the loft in this house as we don’t want to accumulate clutter and the garage already has a spare fridge freezer, Xmas stuff, things we don’t have room for in the house and so on, plus garden supplies (no shed).

Granmerderby I’ve been to two places since Friday that look suspiciously like they’re doing C-word merchandising! My dd has this weekend paid for her children’s visits to Santa’s grotto - they’re fully booked already. 😱

it has never occurred to me to dress my house for the season.

I am an Autumn person, I love the season and the coloursso my living room is decorated in soft yellows, terra cotta and blue, I have daffodils in a vase in spring, roses in summer and dahlias and chrysanths in winter.

Why would I want all the hassle of dickering with the decor all the time?

Georgesgran Sun 07-Sept-25 16:43:34

My DGSs don’t comment on my seasonal decor, but I don’t do Xmas and they usually ask why I don’t have a tree or decorations.

Babs03 Sun 07-Sept-25 16:49:27

Is a lot of faff so no thanks, have noticed that an increasing number of people dress their houses for autumn/Halloween, I think it has come over from the US, but I thought was just for families with children, anyway I don’t need to extra work, Christmas is the only yearly faff I put up with.

LucyAnna5 Sun 07-Sept-25 18:16:33

Some people like to ‘faff’, though, Babs03, me included! We go for lots of walks with the dog in the fields and woods nearby, so much of my decor is natural stuff - a wooden bowl of pretty Autumn leaves, maybe with some fairy lights, a garland of dried hops, etc.

Grandmabatty Sun 07-Sept-25 18:48:23

I like to acknowledge the changing seasons by changing the decor. I have two boxes for Christmas, a box for autumn and one for spring. I used the same stuff every year but I don't get fed up with it because I ring the changes. I like autumn colours anyway and will put up my decorations on first October and take them down mid November.

teabagwoman Sun 07-Sept-25 19:15:59

I can’t be doing with it, too many other things to think about. I do put a few Christmas decorations up and a wreath on the front door. Each to their own.

CanadianGran Sun 07-Sept-25 21:00:19

Not me... my décor stays the same year round, except for Christmas.

The only thing seasonal is flowers.

It is an American thing. We have been over to the East Coast around this time of year a few times. I love to see houses with Autumn (Fall as they call it) decorations. I have a few pumpkin ornaments and an Autumn leaf wreath, plus a felt Autumn leaf garland, which will be displayed soon. Nearer Halloween we add a few ghosts and spider ornaments etc. I enjoy this stuff and find it fun. As Spring approaches I also decorate the house accordingly. I don't have money to burn but have bought the stuff at greatly reduced prices during the year.

Dust-collecting tat

foxie48 Mon 08-Sept-25 07:27:24

I love the autumn colours but outside rather than inside. The smell of the air changes too, nicer than any air freshener. I don't decorate the house but I do have different flower arrangements that reflect what's happening in the garden.

tanith Mon 08-Sept-25 07:37:20

Not for me, really just a way to get people to buy ‘tat’ or dust gatherers.

BlueSapphire Mon 08-Sept-25 07:50:04

I must admit to buying some Autumn cushion covers this year! They will replace the spring/summer ones which I treated myself to back in April.

escaped Mon 08-Sept-25 07:53:01

It's the same here in France too. They have a big public holiday on November 1st where families remember their deceased loved ones, and in readiness for this there are autumnal decorations, soft furnishings and flowers everywhere in the shops and garden centres.

I put it down to the fact that our clothes and fashion change for the Autumn, so why not change the styling in our homes too?
My home is seaside white and blue in the summer, but I go for red in Autumn which serves for winter too. I don't like brown soft furnishings or adornments. It's easy to swap throws and cushions and put a few decorative items round the rooms. The little GC like to come round and touch things that I've collected.

You say that as though it's a bad thing grin
