Why would I want all the hassle of dickering with the decor all the time?
That made me laugh, M0nica 😂
No, I don't think I do but apparently I have to put a lighted pumpkin in the window to show local children they can knock on the door for sweets.
Who knew? I thought they just knocked anyway.
The grandchildren and I used to make collages out of autumn leaves and plenty of glue. Then they took them home.
I might buy some new cushions. The curtains are staying.

An abundance of Autumn decor
(51 Posts)In the garden centre this morning, there were lots of displays, and at least 10 shelves absolutely full of Autumn home decor, everything from table cloths to wreaths, artificial flowers and berries to pumpkin cushions, little fluffy owls to decorated china. You name it, if it had an Autumn vibe it was there.
I’ve got one small string of felt pumpkins which I put on a branch, some honesty from my garden, and when they are ready I will have a bowl full of ornamental gourds which I also grow, but that’s it. I think I’m getting left behind, because it looks as though everybody else must be decorating a lot more than I do. Is it younger people who are decorating like this, do your children, or do you?
Guilty! I decorate for every season/holiday. I just think it makes my home cozy.Yes I am in America but not young (73). I'll keep it up until I don't enjoy it anymore.
Strikethrough failed!
Today I’ve seen two different adverts for ‘ Hallowe’en Countdowns’, which are like Advent calendars, but with 31 doors concealing spooky —trash— trinkets.
My dd has a large cardboard skeleton that hangs in their living area. The children begged for him to stay up after Halloween one time and now he lives there all year and in turn gets decorated with seasonal items - a Santa scarf & hat in December, Easter flowers in spring and so on.
I do hang a wreath on the door these days because I live on a new scheme and everyone’s front door is the same. Some people have absolutely beautiful decorations on their door, I don’t know if they make them or buy them somewhere special.
In our house I have to keep decor to a minimum because we have young cats, for whom all items, if not nailed down, are toys.

When did this become a ‘thing’ I don’t recall it years ago, or maybe I moved in the wrong circles. None of my close or extended circle of family and friends do it and the door wreaths - it used to be at Christmas only.
I’m with you keepingquiet..possibly!
I'm the same...never had wreaths for autumn or different plants or flowers. the only time the decorations were out was at Christmas...must be the younger generation,,,mind you ,none of my daughters do it either.

I forgot, I add pumpkins, bats, spiders and cobwebs to the Autumn stuff for Halloween. It lets the trick or treaters know theyre welcome
We used to do that when we lived in a house. We enjoyed selecting little chocolate bars, sweet treats and fancy biscuits for our neighbours’ children who knocked on the door. We hung plastic spiders in the porch and put creepy lights in the hall window, and pumpkins in the courtyard. Now my husband has died, I have moved to an apartment. It’s 8 floors up so I don’t think I’ll be having them any more. I miss the things we used to do when he was alive. I miss him!
My wreaths are material and not plastic.
I like to see wreaths on doors to reflect the Seasons, looks very homely.
Mine go on the back door as would likely be pinched on the front door😬 and we tend to come and go through the back door anyway.

it has never occurred to me to dress my house for the season.
I am an Autumn person, I love the season and the coloursso my living room is decorated in soft yellows, terra cotta and blue, I have daffodils in a vase in spring, roses in summer and dahlias and chrysanths in winter.

Your living room sounds beautiful, M0nica! Will you be posting a photo?

Just got back from shopping, Tesco in Huntly has chocolate Christmas advent calendars on the shelves.
Today I had an email from Argos inviting me to visit their Christmas shop.
I do actually love Christmas, but mid October is the earliest I’ll start any shopping. I will however very soon be making the usual batch of Delia’s 🎄mincemeat!

I’m definitely not “on trend”, my autumn decor involves making sure various sets of fairy lights are working to brighten up the longer and darker days!
In the North East it was traditional to have Winter and Summer curtains - it can be very cold up here. However, another reason for changing them was a lot of the menfolk worked in the pits (mines) and came home black as crows with coal dust. Most folks also had open fires, fuelled by coal supplied free of charge, by the NCB and of course, smoking was very popular, so actually soft furnishings could get quite grubby, hence the need to change them.
We don't bother. No need and we are happy the way things are. My parents didn't change decor with the seasons either.
I think times change and younger people are influenced by magazines such as House Beautiful and Ideal Home. They also see these things in store and buy them. TKMax and Home Sense do lots but are influenced by the parent company in the US where seasonal decorating is big business.

No, me neither! Couldn't be bothered with all that - never mind the expense involved!
Could we not try to be a little less critical of something as harmless as putting up, or growing certain plants to celebrate autumn.
I do not do it myself, as neither in Scotland, where I grew up, nor in Denmark where I have lived all my adult life has autumn decorations been a tradition.
It seems however to be creeping in from the North of Germany, where it is commonly observed. As is the custom of hanging plastic Easter eggs on bushes or trees in your garden as Easter approaches.
Surely, these things are harmless? Let others enjoy them if the want.

By no means all of the items in my local garden centre were plastic, or cheap items, there was lots of linen and cotton table wear, wool throws and cushions, and glass and wooden pumpkins or other ornaments. I really don’t think the majority of it was tat, but it was very seasonal - which is what I was asking really, do people change their furnishings and ornaments with the seasons, and if you don’t yourself, do your children do so?
I decorate my porch with reusable window clings and seasonal floral arrangements which my daughter makes, all good quality, reusable and nothing cheap or tacky . I do Spring, Easter, Summer, Autumn and at Christmas do the whole house inside and out. I also add Valentine hearts and Remembrance poppies when necessary. My grandchildren love it and neighbours and passers by have commented on how it cheers them up or how pretty it looks. I always try to have seasonal flowers in the house and fragranced candles but only change cushion covers at Christmas time for decorative covers(I do wash the others regularly !) I find it fun to do and it brightens up a large window in part of the house that is often overlooked.
I don’t do it, and I don’t notice any such thing around here. The only wreath that ever goes on our front door is a (real) 🎄one.
Retailers must love it, though - yet more ‘stuff’ for people to buy.
Dd with 3 young children does rather go to town for Halloween, but not yet for Autumn, as far as I know. TBH she finds storing all the 🎄and Halloween stuff quite enough.
While we’re on the subject, must say I’ve always thought that ‘hygge’ was a very clever marketing ploy to induce people to buy a lot of candles and throws, etc.
Nobody does this in my circle of friends
I never have and won’t be starting not for me can’t stand wreaths on doors sorry if I m offending anyone who has one
I m with you Monica apart from flowers that are in season my house does not change its clothing
👍 - why more plastic?!
I don’t really do much other than have a vase of hydrangeas from the garden which are allowed to dry out so the colours fade.
I like making wax melts and made a batch of autumn fragranced ones with cosy names like Mulled Cider, Spiced Pumpkin and Snickerdoodle at the weekend.
Now I live alone I think my home has become more important to me than ever.
Little touches give me pleasure.
