What will happen to my pension when I die?!

..not that I'm hoping too soon! I am in a relationship and if that leads to marriage in, say, a year, what happens if I die first? Would my DH continue to receive any payment?

I have looked on pensions website and references all seem to relate to marriage before 26 Apr 2016 which obviously will not apply.

The rules will probably have changed anyway, but what would happen under the current rules?

Sorry if this has been posted before but I couldn't find it..

Yes, I found that my State pension (which was not at the full rate) went up by about £100 a month when my husband died, as his contributions gave me some extra entitlement.

Not true Luckylegs a widow/widower can inherit a percentage of the SERPS/Additional State Pension element of the State Pension.

It would die with you, like your buss pass etc. Or they would be paying out for ever more.

Hi Rigby, my pension is deferred at present - don't have a full contribution record because I worked abroad for a while. DP is receiving pension (6000 pa)

Rigby46 Fri 26-May-17 14:05:26

angel Are you and DP in receipt of state pensions now? If not, when will you be? What is your NI record like? Have you paid full contributions all your working life?

GracesGranMK2 Fri 26-May-17 10:33:42

I am glad you said it is not quite as simple Rigby as I know my mother got an increase in her state pension when my father died.

Thanks all, not being greedy, just DP has only v small pension through no fault of his own, and I would have liked to feel he would receive something if I die first - not going to be much to leave in my will. Oh well. Thanks very much to all who have responded smile

" Widows pension " I was 59 when dh died nearly 3 yrs ago,(not due my pension until I'm 66/7)

I received "Bereavement allowance" (£111.00) a week for 12 months.

Exactly to the day 12 month later I was put on Job seekers £73.20) per week...so no widows pension dh had state pension and bit of pension credit that stopped at midnight the day he died.

I believe they are changing the Bereavement allowance again.

www.gov.uk/bereavement-support-payment

If I'm reading this correctly, they seem to have gone for those who aren't still bringing up children, apart from in very specific circumstances.

Many thanks to all who've repled; the question was prompted by memories of widow's/widower's pensions - have they been scrapped now?

Jalima1108 Mon 22-May-17 20:58:32

smile thanks chelseababy

Jalima a friend's sister (over 75) just went into a home but he can keep the free tv licence until it expires. Just pays from the renewal date.

Jalima1108 Mon 22-May-17 20:19:45

If one of you gets a free tv licence you have to let them know if the older one deceases as they make you pay.

But never mind, whoever gets in next time will probably stop it all anyway. And what if someone dies just a month or so after getting the fuel allowance - do they ask for a proportion of it back?

The trouble is, DH would never find them. The more I try educating him in what to do when I pop my clogs (as I am the chief bossyboots organiser of the two of us), the more he lets it go in one ear and out the other. He says he'll have no need to worry about paying bills etc, as he'll have been scammed out of all our assets within a week of my passing anyway. I think he's only joking... grin

I think Supemarkets aren't bothered as ong as you have the same surname, but I don't think I could bequeath my Tesco card to my daughter (although I don't se why not!).

Maggiemaybe Mon 22-May-17 19:22:58

Actually, I've a lot of Tesco and Sainsburys points gathering dust. I'd best get them spent!

Ana Mon 22-May-17 18:39:15

I'm still using my late DH's Tesco Club card and no one's ever noticed!

Tizliz Mon 22-May-17 18:32:16

Your Tesco points are added to your Boots points and divided up between the over 55 employees at B&Q

Anya Mon 22-May-17 17:52:38

What will happen to my Tesco points?

Anya Mon 22-May-17 17:52:12

grin

rosesarered Mon 22-May-17 17:49:23

Funnily enough, your bus pass will stop as well.

Rigby46 Mon 22-May-17 17:48:50

Not quite that simple - benefits never are. Any additional pension or SERPS can be inherited. Depending on DOB.
