Had an email about this this morning. They say the charge is too expensive. Surely amazon can afford this?

Let’s not forget who gave Amazon their wonderful tax deal:
Jean Claude Juncker when he was President of Luxembourg and then took the top seat at the top table in the EU.
Just saying ?

What can it possibly have to do with Brexit? Amazon and Visa are two large American businesses.

Amazon in Europe is registered in Luxembourg for tax purposes. I put a link on the first page of this thread about changes in charges due to Brexit.

But they've both said its nothing to do with Brexit.

In other news, wolverines make excellent housepets. (film reference!smile)

Oh come on Allegrias maybe this is the hidden Brexit advantage that we have been promised! Eureka

The answer teally is to use PayPal. That way you don't give out your bank details to anyone else.

Except PayPal.

The only time somebody illegally tried to use my payment details online was via PayPal.

GagaJo Wed 17-Nov-21 18:05:54

I thought you couldn't use Paypal on Amazon anymore?

Because the EU moved to ban excessive profiteering from these charges and limited the charge to 0.3% of the transaction cost - however now that the UK is not a member Visa wishes to push up the charge 500%

They both say it's nothing to do with Brexit.
I'm sure it'll all be sorted out by 19th January.

Yes it’s a Brexit bonus. Visa charging higher fees to EU based companies including Amazon. I’m guessing Amazon are hoping Visa will lower their fees which may well happen.

vegansrock Thu 18-Nov-21 06:24:59

“They both say it's nothing to do with Brexit.” No it’s just a coincidence that Visa put their charges up the minute Brexit enabled them to do so.

vegansrock Thu 18-Nov-21 06:58:30

Plus Visas issued in EU can still be used.

Between us my husband and I have 10 cards, all of them are Mastercard. We also have a small business, Visa payments are awfully high about 2.75%

Worthingpatchworker Thu 18-Nov-21 11:31:16

It’s been discussed on This Morning. Amazon have their own credit card now.

pce612 Thu 18-Nov-21 11:34:09

I only have an Amazon credit card; I get a £10 credit to my Amazon account when I have spent a certain amount. Doesn't matter where I use it.
I am buying stuff anyway and a little 'freebie' is welcome.

We have stopped taking credit cards in our business. Customers can either pay via bank transfer or PayPal (American banks are not very good with transfers). I think I save nearly £50 a month in various charges. USA cards are 4% charge

I heard this on the radio yesterday. It won't affect me as I don't have a Visa credit card. I do tend to use PayPal for payments if possible.

You can find full info here www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59306200. Just to summarise my understanding is that from 19th January Amazon will no longer accept payment by Visa credit cards. However they will still accept payment by Visa debit cards.

Should you change? Why mend what isn't broken is my policy.

Petalpop Thu 18-Nov-21 12:08:18

I use Mastercard to pay Amazon and then I go to my on line bank and pay the money straight across to my credit card company. I used to pay by debit card but a few years back my account was hacked. The bank did not want to know nor did Amazon until I rang them up and complained about all the years I had been shopping with them and it was not a large amount. They repaid me.

Daisend1 Thu 18-Nov-21 12:14:44

Nipsmum
I used repeat used Pay Pal until on one occasion it showed an unconfirmed large purchase.
Fortunately my bank dealt with it.

What’s the relevance of the 19th January?
Can someone explain, sorry if I’m being thick, but it’s my birthday and I don’t want it to be mixed up in a millennium bug type scenario

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 18-Nov-21 12:25:17

Perhaps they think that gives time for things to be returned after Xmas and cost credited back to Visa card Fanny? Or plenty of time for the backlash to cause Visa to cave in?

jocork Thu 18-Nov-21 12:44:09

I usually use a mastercard credit card but until the ban comes into force I'll be swapping to my visa one. Amazon make obscene amounts of profit, don't pay enough tax and have some seriously bad environmental practices, such as dumping perfectly good unsold items. I don't give them much business anyway, but some things are just too difficult to get elsewhere!

Cambia Thu 18-Nov-21 12:49:13

It’s not a scam. It is Amazon using this to negotiate lower prices for accepting visa. It won’t be long before they only accept their own credit card,. Amazon just have too much power in the retail world now.

EthelJ Thu 18-Nov-21 12:54:32

It has been in the news Amazon said they would up is refuse to accept visa from the end of January. But I think that it is an attempt by Amazon to make visa reduce their charges which have increased since we left the EU. I think it will be resolved by the time it is due to come into effect.
