Had an email about this this morning. They say the charge is too expensive. Surely amazon can afford this?

Funny that Anazon have a Mastercard credit card available. Just trying to get more people to use it so more money for Amazon?

Katie59 Thu 18-Nov-21 13:23:45

Nothing to do with fees, Amazon would be on the very lowest rate.
This is about chargebacks where dissatisfied customers complain the the credit card company to get a refund. Secondly to make customers use their own Amazon Pay system, no doubt with credit facilities that are controlled by them.

I never ever use Amazon they treat employees badly and don’t pay proper taxes.

What can it possibly have to do with Brexit? Amazon and Visa are two large American businesses."

It is to do with Brexit because under EU regulations the amount credit card companies could charge in the EU is capped. Now we are not in the EU credit card companies can spend as much as they want and the cap no longer applies in the UK. Martin Lewis's article explains the complexity. But it's definitely a result of Brexit

I meant credit card companies can charge as much as they want not spend!

Gwenisgreat1 Thu 18-Nov-21 13:31:20

Well, I'm thinking of changing my bank account, this will help me choose which bank I go to!

Juicylucy Thu 18-Nov-21 13:42:58

Not a scam it’s because they have now brought out there own credit card. It’s Amazon after all they are not stupid.

Coco51 Thu 18-Nov-21 13:56:59

It is all overthe news now - Visa have taken a hit on their shares., so with that and loss of revenue on purchases I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t go back to Amazon with further negotiations. If that works, will Amazon threaten to do the same with Mastercard? I’m certainly not going to be strong-armed into using an Amazon card.

Lincslass Thu 18-Nov-21 13:57:11

Brexit or not, they’re both rip off merchants, one charges huge interest amounts, yes even while in the EU, the other one does not contribute enough tax to the country it’s making billions out of. Time to say goodbye to both methinks.

I think another problem traders have with some Visa providers is the time they take to pass money from customer to trader. I once had a problem with a company almost three months after I’d bought something and called Barclaycard. They said they hadn’t passed the money through and would now withhold it until the dispute was settled. How many traders can afford to wait that long for payment?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 18-Nov-21 13:58:57

I feel very sorry for the vast numbers of small companies who sell via Amazon.

katy1950 Thu 18-Nov-21 14:16:06

Oh well never mind if they don't want my money I'll shop somewhere else

Judy54 Thu 18-Nov-21 14:25:33

Me too katy1950. I think this will be a problem for Amazon and customers will go elsewhere.

Paperbackwriter Thu 18-Nov-21 14:33:51

It's one of those Brexit outcomes. Anyone still think it's working for us? Anyone?

Alioop Thu 18-Nov-21 14:42:44

My bank is changing from Visa cards to MasterCard in the new year. Is that a coincidence or what! I moaned about them changing things and why can't they leave things as they are, now I'm glad of the change.

Gabrielle56 Thu 18-Nov-21 14:49:56

I thought they already had a credit card? Isn't there an small reference to it on the payments preferences page? Either way I think that they're just being the complete tossers they are! The richest idiot on the planet moaning about paying his dues? Pathetic behaviour and proves he doesn't give a jot about his customers. Not everyone can use their current account like a credit card- that's why they - have a credit card.........ya?

Nannapat1 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:11:54

This is not a scam. It is all over the news that Amazon will not accept Visa credit cards after 19 January 2022. I've yet to receive my email though.

Lillian40 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:28:41

Just checked Amazon will accept Visa Debit cards but not Visa credit cards.

TwiceAsNice Thu 18-Nov-21 15:35:00

I’m very cross about it as a I have a Visa credit card I use on Amazon (and elsewhere) and pay off every month. I won’t use a debit card online either. Daughter says get another card and just use it for Amazon but I like having just one card.

Apparently Ive heard Amazon is bringing out its own MasterCard so that might be part of the reason.

Alegrias1 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:37:59

Amazon already have a credit card.

It is co-branded with Mastercard.

Teacheranne Thu 18-Nov-21 15:40:19

Yes it’s a Brexit bonus. Visa charging higher fees to EU based companies including Amazon. I’m guessing Amazon are hoping Visa will lower their fees which may well happen.

I’m a bit confused as the Sky article says that MasterCard have already increased their fees to the same % that Visa are planning yet Amazon still accept their cards!

Teacheranne Thu 18-Nov-21 15:41:09

Ahh, could be why Amazon are happy to pay the increased fees for MasterCard but not for Visa.,

Kaggi60 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:41:27

It was a news report yesterday saying Amazon can't afford the charges for Visa Cards.

Albangirl14 Thu 18-Nov-21 16:00:39

Hope it will encourage people to stop buying from Amazon . We stopped when we heard they don,t paty their staff properly or pay their Taxes. Plus independent bookshops we all claim to like go out of buisness.

gulligranny Thu 18-Nov-21 16:08:02

My bank has dropped Visa for debit cards, so presumably nothing to do with charges for credit cards.

I use a Barclaycard Visa credit card for online purchases only (I collect Reward points) so it'll be interesting to see what happens next.

nexus63 Thu 18-Nov-21 16:26:40

it is not a scam, they are stopping them from january 19th. they will still accept visa debit cards just not credit cards.
