Had a text this morning from Santander saying, unless I transferred more money into my account, they would not pay/honour any of my standing orders or Bills. My main Bank is Barclays, but I do have an online 123Account and an old ISA with Santander. I rang them and they said that I had paid various people (they gave me a list) and that there was only £2 or so left in the account. They had even takeThe names they gave were totally unknown to me. On further talking to this Bank person, he said that this matter will have to be investigated further but he cannot guarantee that I will get my money refunded. When I rang the local Santander, they said because it was an online a/c they couldn’t help me.
If there’s anyone who is in the know about these things, could you please advice me? Thanks x

It takes me two or three minutes every morning (as part of my breakfast routine) to check my bank account and credit card accounts. That way I would know very quickly if there was any strange payments etc.
Do think more of us should get into this habit.

I had exactly the same call yesterday Hellogirl down to the last detail. I did nothing .

It’s very rare that there’s a scam on Amazon.
But as I’m someone who covers any would be problem I take my card off Amazon after every transaction and just put it on again next time I order.
That way even if someone got into my account my card isn’t there to pay for the order.

I am so pleased you got your money back, this must have been very stressful for you.

i also keep my cards in a holder, looks bit like a small cigarette case, which hopefully protects from their being read and copied.
i originally got it to avoid double tapping when entering transport.
people used to swipe their pass from a wallet which also held bank cards, and didn't realise until getting statement at end of month that payment to travel had also been taken from bank cards when they already had produced a ticket/pass.

well i don't do online banking, partly because i don't really understand how it can be secure, and i don't have a smart phone, and rarely spend anything, just bills and a few shops once or twice a month.
but if i got a message like those mentioned above, even if i could check my balance online, i would want to contact the bank to ask them about it.
is there any reason why above posters did not.

The £1100 one was supposed to be international.

Last week I had a call saying that 2 transactions had been made from my account, both to Amazon, one for £300 and one for £1100. I was given a number to call to discuss it. I didn`t call because I checked my account and nothing had been taken out. Yesterday, I got the same call, with the same monetary amounts mentioned. Once again, my account is intact.

Here's more information on how scammers can read your card from your pocket or your hand. You can wrap the card in foil if you are going somewhere busy where criminals abound (city shops etc):
Are contactless cards safe

A friend had thousands taken from her bank account. They think there was someone behind her when she was waiting in a shop queue and holding the card in her hand. Somehow they 'read' the card as she was standing there. Maybe with a machine. So don't wave your card around in busy places!

Yes Bakingmad - they are investigating and are sending me some paperwork in the post. They feel that they accessed information from my mobile phone - I honestly don’t understand the connection. Once I complete the forms, I guess they will get a better understanding of my banking habits and what really went wrong. All that I can say is that, I do everything online. I don’t know when I last physically went into a Bank. I use the cashpoint to withdraw cash. And every other transaction is done online,
My only advice would be - check your accounts regularly and contact your Bank if you suspect unauthorised activity.

Thank you crazyH that’s good advice to check bank statements on line regularly. I have to say I haven’t been doing that, but shall from now on. We all have to try and beat these scammers!
I’m glad you got it sorted out so quickly, but like you I don’t understand how they got access to your account. It will be interesting to hear what the bank says, when they have done their investigations.

Well done, crazyH. It's something I'm sure we all worry about, no matter how careful we are, and thank you for reminding us again! So glad you got your money back after the horrible time you had to go through. flowers

Ring their fraud line and stay on the line until you get an answer. This is not your fault and tell them that you want your money back or you will have to speak to a solicitor.

Have you read the thread ?

Did Santander explain how it had happened, and how to avoid it happening again? It would be useful for us all to know, forewarned is forearmed!

Millie22 Sat 16-Jul-22 11:36:19

Please take care of your money everyone. There are so many scam calls just now and they can sound so convincing. Do not engage with people unless you have rang them on a genuine bank number.

I've recently had that horrible text msg purporting to be from my son asking for money as he'd lost his phone.

They are just lowlife doing this.

Smileless2012 Sat 16-Jul-22 11:36:16

Oh crazy that's wonderful news. Thank goodness, you must be so relieved flowers.

Blossoming Sat 16-Jul-22 11:36:02

Brilliant result CrazyH, you can relax now ?. A lesson for us all to be careful.

Shandy57 Sat 16-Jul-22 11:33:47

It is definitely worth setting up two-step verification, so that you receive a code to your mobile phone to confirm transactions.

Annaram1 Sat 16-Jul-22 11:23:47

I got a phone call yesterday evening from Santander asking me to confirm that an amount of about £350 was paid to someone abroad that morning. He said the request had been made from Coventry. I said I was in Devon and he said he would remove it from my account and get the person in Coventry to be looked into. Glad you got your money back, crazy.

Callistemon21 Sat 16-Jul-22 11:21:58

Thank goodness, what a relief!
