Car Insurance documents

My little runabout car's MOT is due.
I don't know what made me think of it but while I was checking all the other documents I checked the insurance, I AM insured so the govt.uk website tells me - but WHERE is my certificate?
I remember I was with Lloyds but I changed because they tried to renew automatically and upped the premium to a ridiculous price, and I remember my new insurer telling me they no longer produced paper documents as everything was stored online.
I don't recall who my new insurers are!
I can't find any documents on my computer.
The govt webpage is no help.

How can I find out when my insurance expires? And more importantly, if I'm asked by the police to produce my docs at the police station - what would I do?

Has anyone any idea how I find out where the insurance certificate might be stored?

Try putting ‘insurance’ in your email search facility. If they don’t send out a paper copy, they must have emailed it to you.

Check your bank account for payment, if there's a reference and no name Google the reference. Failing that ask the bank who the payment was paid to.

As a last resort use this company, although you'll pay a fee and it may take a while -
The Motor Insurer’s Database
If you’ve tried all other options and you’re still left asking which car insurance company you’re with – the Motor Insurer’s Database is a sure-fire way to find out.

In actual fact, the AskMID service is designed with accident victims in mind – as a quick way to check whether any vehicle involved in an incident has got insurance. The free check on the website lets you simply find out whether or not a car’s got insurance – but the paid check (currently costing £4.50 for a single search) returns more insurance details – including the name of the company that provides cover

The police have access to The Motor Insurance Database, so won’t ask to see your documents.

Our insurer sends an email link to documents although they will also post if asked. Might be worth searching emails or text messages exdancer. If you have any old paperwork it will tell you when it expires at least. Another thought is a search back through your card or bank records will show who you paid for insurance. Easier if you’ve found the expiry date. Don’t fret, you’ll find it somehow.

I usually get a lot of spam when my insurance is due, so consider this a bit of a reminder! Checking the bank payments is the best way to check I think.

Fortunately I haven't been asked to provide any documentation, and the govt.uk webpage confirms I am insured.
Life was so much easier when you had paper confirmation of everything, my MOT and logbook are safely in a folder in my desk drawer - and it used to contain the insurance certificate too.
I'm beginning to sound like my Mum!

* And can you remember saving all your MOT pass certificates too?

All online now.

Check in your Downloads, most companies now send an email with an attachment to download and then you can print it off if you want a paper copy.

My car insurance documents are all online, and far too many to want to print out.

In my phone contacts list I have a "person" that is the insurance company's name, my policy number and the year, then their phone number.

It makes it quick and easy to find!

When I renew a policy . I save all the documents to a folder on my desktop. And name the folder for the relevant insurance . I also have a paper folder for cars , home etc and write the renewal date on it , plus mot date

Direct Line sends paper copies, haven't increased my premiums for as long as I can remember and responds to my occasional distress calls promptly. My paper copies are filed in the old fashiioned way.

PS, BTW, my carbon footprint is tiny so I am entitled to the occasional paper copy.....

Yes Seadragon I think you are.
I have my last MOT certificate in my 'Car' folder, along with my paper 'Logbook'. Am I being told everything will be online from now on - even logbooks?
