Finance after divorce

My sons divorce has just been finalised. They had no assets so no financial agreement was necessary. I joked that now he could win the lottery and not have to share it with his ex. He said he had been told she could still claim from him even after divorce.
Does anyone know if this is true?

I don’t think so. But if the lottery ‘ticket’ was bought before the decree absolute, I would. assume the winnings were part of the joint assets. I am not a solicitor, but I am just guessing…

Btw I am divorced.

This will explain.

The important part is the Clean Break Order

Thanks @petra

The legal queen on facebook is very good on things like this . I think she says to get a financial order for a clean break. You can get a free solicitor consultation for 30 mins I think ?

Ah, yes indeed & well-said. I'm still missing her too confused

Agree needs to complete a Clean Break Order.

Depends on what was in the final documentation. I would think most divorces it is stated that everything is final and she would have no further claim on him for anything.

I think the clean break order normally needs to be done before the absolute is done - he should see a solicitor.

Has GSM departed? I hope not.

Agree if the lottery ticket was purchased after you have divorced, there is nothing you owe. I’m divorced but personally I will be happy to give my ex-husband some of the winnings - he is special enough.

Ages ago, but returned briefly under another name I think

.

Presume there aren't any children and so I don't think that's correct.

I know someone who inherited and then sold a large property (£1m+) from a relative shortly after his divorce was finalised and his ex had no claim on it (nor did she want to, to be fair).

still on here I think..

It is true if there is no financial order made. They need to make an agreement about pensions and other monies such as inheritance in the future. Divorce only ends the actual marriage.

Aldom Sat 19-Apr-25 17:03:15

Hmm, yes, I thought I saw GSM one day recently.

Mojack26 Sat 19-Apr-25 17:16:16

Not true. They are legally divorced

crazyH Sat 19-Apr-25 17:22:15

I could be wrong but did GSM return as FGT ?

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 19-Apr-25 17:28:49

No!

Re GSM, I thought I recognised her under a name beginning with B but many be wrong, and this person hasn't contributed for a few weeks. Hope she's OK.
