Finance after divorce

My sons divorce has just been finalised. They had no assets so no financial agreement was necessary. I joked that now he could win the lottery and not have to share it with his ex. He said he had been told she could still claim from him even after divorce.
Does anyone know if this is true?

Once decree nisi has been granted there is no claim on the ex.

I think you mean absolute

Decree Nisi is merely the court agreeing that you can divorce. It is SO important to get a clean break order to prevent any future claims before getting the decree absolute.

Oh yes she can unless you have a complete financial order in place, signed by the ex wife. www.gov.uk/government/publications/form-a-notice-of-intention-to-proceed-with-an-application-for-a-financial-order

I really do know about this and, while it depends on the circumstances, your ex can apply for financial Orders against you for years (and years) unless he or she has remarried and made no financial claims before the remarriage.
A clean break Order is always safest but a good divorce lawyer can advise you in your individual circumstances whether the potential risk outweighs the faff of getting this.
