I've been reminded that over a month ago I was tentatively suggesting doing something in Edinburgh on Burns Night - or rather Burns Lunchtime, as that gives people longer to get home afterwards.

I think we had four possible expressions of interest at that time - Gally, Marelli, Baubles and me. Anyone else going to join us?

And do we want to have a toast to His Nibs, and to The Lasses and someone reciting the Ode to a Haggis, or just a plate of haggis, neeps and chappit tatties and constant conversation?

The receptionist at the venue I had in mind originally sounded distinctly lukewarm when I did a very preliminary recce - could be because I had no idea of numbers or date or anything. If I get it a bit more concrete I will go back.

Don't finish work till half four. What does pmed mean?

Henrietta Wed 16-Jan-13 19:11:03

It means private message!! Got it and have replied.

Stansgran Wed 16-Jan-13 20:33:32

The way I feel I could toast even Burns can't stand things in dialect since o level T am O' Shanter and would love to celebrate anything. But I draw the line at haggis and feel whisky is only for colds with sugar and hot water.

jeni Wed 16-Jan-13 20:46:29

I did tam o shanter as well.
The prisoner of Chillon
Sohrab and Rustum
Xanadu
And some others!

Stansgran Wed 16-Jan-13 20:55:07

Yes same year I,m sure and Flipping Isabella and her ghastly pot of basil which never fails to surface like a pustule when I'm making pesto and st. Agnes eve with" they are all here tonight the whole bloodthirsty race "when ever there is a family reunion( on my husbands side I hasten to add)

jeni Wed 16-Jan-13 21:00:53

The last dead leaf, the last of its clan! I don't remember the pot of basil?

annodomini Wed 16-Jan-13 21:06:28

jeni, obviously we didn't go to the same school but it sounds as if we used the same poetry book. By Xanadu, I assume you mean Kublai Khan.

jeni Wed 16-Jan-13 21:13:11

In Xanadu did Kublai Khan a stately pleasure dome decree
Where Alph, the sacred river ran
Down to a hidden seagrin

annodomini Wed 16-Jan-13 22:04:42

'.............................................ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.'

gracesmum Wed 16-Jan-13 22:12:36

The pot of basil had her "beloved"'s head in it didn't it? I wonder if that's why mine never does particularly well? grin

jeni Wed 16-Jan-13 22:15:04

I love
Was woman wailing for her demon lover

annodomini Wed 16-Jan-13 22:54:14

Yes, that line certainly sends a shiver up the spine, as does My Last Duchess:
"I gave commands
Then all smiles stopped together."

gracesmum - Mine is looking a bit weedy too. Have you got anyone's head in mind?

gracesmum Wed 16-Jan-13 23:02:11

hmm hmm

Notsogrand Wed 23-Jan-13 16:33:32

Have a lovely time on Friday ladies! I'll raise a glass (or two smile) and will be thinking of you.

jeni Wed 23-Jan-13 16:42:56

To "the immortal memory!"
