For Newsnight: should we end universal benefits for better off pensioners?

An ally of David Cameron's, Nick Boles, is about to make a speech calling for an end to universal benefits for better-off pensioners - bus passes, winter fuel allowance, free prescriptions - and the money to be spent on childcare.

We may go on Newsnight tonight to talk about this. What do you think? Any examples of how these benefits help or what they mean to people?

'Today I've been...' is, I think, into its third edition, having reached 1000 posts on two (or is it more?) occasions.

I'm sure it's about number 6 by now - I remember it being Vol. 5.

absentgrana Wed 22-Aug-12 18:02:40

What about the quiet place thread, whatever it was called, that was hugely popular?

Anagram Wed 22-Aug-12 18:28:56

Seems to have died a natural death now, though...confused

absent, in reply to your earlier post suggesting that anyone making allegations of unfairness etc. on GN should cite their references - that would not be possible without revealing the identity of the member being accused. It seems that GNHQ are quite happy with veiled references, but not out and out naming and blaming!

Yes! My 'are you redy for Christmas? ' thread has vanished!sad

Anagram Wed 22-Aug-12 18:47:06

Hooray! Oh, dear....sad

NfkDumpling Wed 22-Aug-12 18:48:00

Well Jeni, I've just binned yet another charity Christmas catalogue. Perhaps it's time to start a fresh thread. What topic does it go under?

Greatnan Wed 22-Aug-12 18:52:36

Unless I get fed up I intend to go on posting one or more jokes per day - I have found a whole new site with an endless supply.

Anagram Wed 22-Aug-12 19:04:03

NfkDumpling. Why would you want to start another one? confused
It's still summer!

jeni Wed 22-Aug-12 19:27:44

You could
Have fooled me!

NfkDumpling Wed 22-Aug-12 19:30:31

Come to Norfolk!

Anagram Wed 22-Aug-12 19:36:20

I meant literally, not weather-wise!
(Does that make sense? hmm)

Nonu Wed 22-Aug-12 19:39:45

I would never go back to Norfolk , the people are soooo parochial it beggars belief , okay for a holiday , but to live there , give me a break .,

Annobel Wed 22-Aug-12 19:43:21

I had good friends in Norfolk, but admittedly they were all in-comers, as were we.

merlotgran Wed 22-Aug-12 20:58:56

I spent two of the happiest years of my life in Norfolk. Had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the Fens sad

petallus Wed 22-Aug-12 21:23:45

My beloved nan grew up in Norfolk and I've loved the accent ever since.

Annobel Wed 22-Aug-12 21:40:34

When I read The Wind in the Willows to the boys, somehow I always found it appropriate to read the Mole's words in a Norfolk accent!

NfkDumpling Thu 23-Aug-12 06:57:15

We're only parochial on the outside.

Littlenellie Thu 23-Aug-12 08:54:38

I am an incomer, but I love Norfolk, beautiful part of the world,I love the accent and find myself picking up not so much the accent but the phraseology, and it comes out in a cockney accent, therefore am a new breed I am a Nockney grin

Grannylin Thu 23-Aug-12 09:10:37

Haha! I'm glad you combined those bits of the two words and not the other two nelliegrin

Littlenellie Thu 23-Aug-12 09:29:26

No the other combination I will leave for the natives as I am led to believe there are a lot " closely related" families,in the villages, there are a lot of whisperings about who belongs to who ...grin

Greatnan Thu 23-Aug-12 09:34:16

I don't know about Norfolk, nellie - it could just be nasty rumours put about by people in Suffolk - but there is certainly an increased risk of congenital abnormalities in the children of close relatives. This has been a source of some concern amongst those medical professionals dealing with the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities in Britain.

Littlenellie Thu 23-Aug-12 09:50:47

* greatnan* I wasnt aware of this for the Pakistani/ Bangladeshi community, but there is a saying that any deficiency is written "NFN" which translates as Normal for Norfolk,I have read an article about this concerning a family going to their GP for some problem or other, and one of the family was a little bit slow and this was recorded on their notes, and it seems to be recognised as a condition peculiar to Norfolk and also the Fens...who I have heard being referred to as Fenbillies..

NfkDumpling Thu 23-Aug-12 10:05:39

Normal for Norfolk is also because we like to dew diffrunt an we int as slow as wha' we meak owt t' be. An thas a blooda gud thing tha' all them ther furriners ar a comin here cos thas a dilewtin tha there interbreedin an all what people ar allus on abowt an shearkin us up a bi'.

Littlenellie Thu 23-Aug-12 10:14:23

Definitely not slow when doing a deal and money is changing hands,I have noticed a rapid improvement in secondsgrin ..especially when hearing a cockney accent..
