Thought I would post this up for those of us who are hoping for the stamina to stay up!

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-May-15 09:11:41

I do feel sorry for Ed (M). I think he is probably a nice man personally.

POGS Fri 08-May-15 09:16:20

The prediction is Labour would have lost even if they held all their seats in Scotland.

Does that mean Ed Miliband might resign as leader?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-May-15 09:17:25

OMG! Foxhunting might come back! shock

whitewave Fri 08-May-15 09:19:40

jing almost certainly amongst other things.

BBC saying Ed Miliband is STANDING DOWN

petra Fri 08-May-15 09:20:38

POGS. Your post Re Andy Burnham. I can't print here what I would like to do to that man Re his attitude at the time of the Mid Staffs horror.

merlotgran Fri 08-May-15 09:24:51

What other things,whitewave

The Conservatives haven't made a come-back. They've been in government for the last five years hmm

glammanana Fri 08-May-15 09:38:53

Wondering who would replace Ed Miliband if he does go could it be one of the Ladies for a change,we have the MP Angela Eagle as our MP and she has won her seat again she is excellent at what she does and a pity she is not a true blue (as I am ) if ever there was a person in the wrong party it is her she works so hard for this area just does not match my political ideals which is sad really.

I cant comment on all these posts now.
Plus I havent seen the tv coverage from 5am onwards yet.

In my opinion, because the left voters are becoming more vocal, it shuts others up. But everyone can talk at the ballot box.

The economy always comes into play. Perhaps a lot of people, myself included, on gransnet and UK wide, forgot that.
It has been a big turnaround that, on gransnet at least, wasnt spoken about much.

The NHS doesnt appear to have been that big an issue nationally?
Or was it just that other issues were bigger for the electorate[I am not talking about Scotland].

Mishap Fri 08-May-15 09:43:01

OK - hands up who managed to stay awake all night!

POGS Fri 08-May-15 09:45:23

ME, I did and not stopping until the final whistle!

POGS Fri 08-May-15 09:47:36

Sky News was the best for instant results but all 4 t.v channels that covered it had their moments.

Jeremy Paxman enjoyed himself.

soontobe Fri 08-May-15 09:49:13

Can I say that I think that voters on gransnet who support Labour, and lean towards Labour have been quite magnaminous on this thread tonight.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-May-15 09:51:08

soontobe open your curtains.

rosequartz Fri 08-May-15 09:51:23

Your 2nd paragraph is correct imo, soontobe

No, Mishap, I needed a good night's sleep as I have DGD later! grin

soontobe Fri 08-May-15 09:52:30

Eloethan Fri 08-May-15 09:54:00

Some people are wondering how it is that the Scots voted against independence and yet have overwhelmingly supported the SNP in this general election.

The "Better Together" campaign seemed to me to put forward two contradictory views at the same time: (1) Scotland was an important part of the UK, without which the UK would be sadly lacking, both economically and culturally; and (2) Scotland was of little economic importance to the UK and would find itself impoverished if it broke with the UK.

Having been persuaded by both the weasly words of the "Better Together" campaign and/or the underlying threats regarding membership of the EU, currency, etc., the Scottish people must have been incensed to see that the whole thrust of the Conservative general election campaign was to demonise Scotland.

It's my opinion that this insulting and shameful about-turn has been instrumental in alienating even those Scottish people who formerly voted against independence.

Labour also bears responsibility for the fact that they have taken the Scottish vote for granted and, like all other parties, are too London-centric. In addition they joined with the Conservatives in the "Better Together" campaign and by so doing have probably alienated many Scottish voters who now see Labour as part of the "City of London club". The Conservatives can depend on the massive support they receive from the right wing press and big business but Labour has to actually earn its support and not take a single vote for granted.

soontobe How do the "left voters" shut other people up? If there are, as the Gransnet survey seemed to indicate, far more Conservative supporters on here than Labour ones, surely the reason that there are more comments from left wingers is because right wingers aren't bothered enough to participate?

Silence is golden smile

Eloethan Fri 08-May-15 10:05:42

No, silence is cowardly if you think something is unjust but shut up about it. (I realise you're being sarcastic by the way).

POGS Fri 08-May-15 10:06:26

smile

AshTree Fri 08-May-15 10:13:38

Conservatives may not be 'bothered enough' to participate in the GN politics forum, but that doesn't mean they aren't 'bothered enough' to care about politics.
Merlot grin

POGS Fri 08-May-15 10:13:50

Question.

If the BBC are correct and Miliband does stand down is Harriet Harperson in charge until a new leader is elected?

soontobe Fri 08-May-15 10:16:34

The older I get, the more I realise that courage is a very important factor in a persons' life.
It no longer seems to be taught as a life lesson, but it is important in lots of things in life.

Tegan Fri 08-May-15 10:17:52

I'm so annoyed that I had the tv on all night but dozed through most of it. Feeling a bit shell shocked this morning by it all. There seems [at first glance] to be a bit of sniping going on on her, but could be wrong as I'm still half asleep and haven't read through properly. So I'll say this. I've always been a Labour voter but was considering not doing so this time. In the end, I did, and I'm glad that I did. However, I haven't felt comfortable at the thought of the two Eds being in power andI guess it's better for the economy that the Conservatives are still in power, because everything depends on a strong economy. I'm very sorry for the LibDems and still think they are the most decent of all of the parties. I'm sure they reined in the Tories from doing a lot of things that they would have liked to do over the last 5 years and am dreading what is likely to happen over the next 5.; heaven help the NHS, state education, and those who depend on the welfare state. I'm disgusted at the thought of so many people voting UKIP even though it didn't result in them having many MP's. As for the SNP, they seemed to have effectively stopped the UK from ever having a socialist government of any kind in the future and, having complained that Westminster only care about the south [which is true] they seem to only care about the north [isn't that two faced?]. I'm sure that a lot of people voted Conservative because they hated the thought of the SNP holding the balance of power in some way.Whatever I feel myself, I only want whats best for the country as a whole and this election seems to have been based on people wanting what's best for themselves. It'll be interesting to see where we are in 5 years time. I may rejoin the Labour Party because I know that, at grass roots level, they are a caring party and it's vital for the country that there is a strong opposition [for that reason I hope that Ed Milliband stands down sad]. How did 'The Pub Landlord' do, by the way??

POGS Fri 08-May-15 10:23:10

I think I have had my question answered by Damien McBride.

Harperson will likely be caretaker for the coming months. Best Miliband stays on.
