English Votes for English Laws

This is to be given a fast-track timetable in the Commons, so that MPs can vote on it on 15th July.
Do you think this is right? Less than two weeks to decide on the biggest shakeup since the Act of the Union?

If this goes ahead, no Scottish MP would ever be able to be PM, according to some commentators.
Why was there such a fuss made about Scotland staying in the union when the Government are now wanting to kick Scotland out?
Gerald Kaufman has said that it will undermine the whole basis of British democracy back to the Magna Carta.

Sounds depressing, I was there in an October, sunshine and the hotel made delicious packed lunches for our walks on the moors , weather perfect for walking and photography

Elegran Mon 06-Jul-15 16:42:36

The Brontes were all pretty depressed themselves, not surprisingly.

Haworth is interesting but like most places that attract a lot of tourists it is very commercialised. The area around Haworth is stunning. Moors, waterfalls and the KWR for steam engine enthusiasts. Beautiful on a sunny day. Brooding on a stormy winter's day. Picturesque when it snows.

It is beautiful countryside Vampirequeen, I loved it there

Many great writers and poets were/are depressed Elegran , seems a price paid for such immense talent

I came across this, posted by Peter Grant MP.

"SNP MP Kirsty Blackman wrote to the leader of the House of Commons asking which bills in the current parliamentary session would be designated as "England only" or "England and Wales only" under the government's "English votes for English laws". One of the Bills on the list she got back was the Scotland Bill. ‪#‎couldntmakeitup‬

POGS, my parents were married in Bridlington, we used to go to Robin Hood's Bay every year, and I had a charming B&B in York for ten years. I doubt whether you would have stayed in it though, if you had been to York before. It was rather special.

Anniebach had said you might be from Hull but she did not think so. I just agreed with her. People from Hull usually have more empathy than you appear to have.

durhamjen Mon 06-Jul-15 21:19:50

That's interesting, FarNorth. Perhaps it's a problem of the Tories wanting to rule everything; they do not know where England ends and Scotland begins.

POGS Mon 06-Jul-15 21:31:08

Durhamjen

Thank you for confirming the points I raised in my post 00.03 at every opportunity you can.

I'm sorry you don't think I am capable of empathy.

durhamjen Mon 06-Jul-15 21:35:20

Did I say that? Read my comment more carefully.

" Anniebach said you might be from Hull but she did not think so. I just agreed with her. People from Hull usually have more empathy than you appear to have"

You are just taking the rise Durhamjen and spoiling for one of your petty little fights. You will be the 'victim' next, it's what you do.

Have this one on me.

Saying people dont have empathy[I am talking in general, not specifically about anyone in life at all], is the new trick in town.
It sounds good, but on the internet in particular, has no meaning. For a start, if you look across everything they have written, a much more balanced view is obtained. Plus everyone from time to time is going to write something that a handful or several people dont agree with. That is life.
On the internet, as in real life, what a person does, should be looked at as a whole.
An isolated comment, whether right or wrong, is really ridiculous to make a charge of lots of things.

rosesarered Tue 07-Jul-15 09:20:21

Very true, Soontobe.

Maggiemaybe Tue 07-Jul-15 15:31:51

The Welsh never get excitable about anything English, what is there to get excited about?

What a childish and spiteful comment.

Anniebach Tue 07-Jul-15 15:57:57

Not at all Maggiemaybe, it was a response to a post which claimed the opposite

Maggiemaybe Tue 07-Jul-15 16:33:48

So you actually stand by a statement that there is nothing to get excited about in a whole country? hmm

Any other countries in the world fit the statement, or just boring old England?

Anniebach Tue 07-Jul-15 16:37:51

Well, there is Alan Rickman

durhamjen Tue 07-Jul-15 17:11:39

"People from Hull usually have more empathy than you appear to have" does not say you have no empathy. It just says they have more.

You insulted people from Hull.

Riverwalk Tue 07-Jul-15 17:31:02

I really hate Nationalism and its little brother Regionalism - it's petty and dangerous.

The idea that someone who is not from Hull could be lacking in empathy by virtue of not being from Hull is really childish and stupid IMO.

The four arseholes who blew up London 10 years ago today were all YORKSHIRE born and bred.

Iam64 Tue 07-Jul-15 18:05:24

Strong words Riverwalk - I agree with you, nationalism and regionalism are petty and potentially dangerous.

Some of the discussions on gransnet recently are dire blush

feetlebaum Tue 07-Jul-15 18:05:39

Well said, Riverwalk

Maggiemaybe Tue 07-Jul-15 20:10:24

Quite, Iam64. I find myself avoiding certain forums for the sake of my blood pressure. smile

Maggiemaybe Tue 07-Jul-15 20:13:07

Actually though, Riverwalk, one of the four arseholes was from Jamaica.

POGS Tue 07-Jul-15 20:21:26

Durhamjen

I did not insult the people from Hull.

Again you make my point for me, you are spoiling for one of your petty little fights.

durhamjen Tue 07-Jul-15 23:54:38

Much more important. There was a vote on it today, which the government lost. Hopefully the first of many votes lost.

An extract from that Guardian report makes clear that, at present, Evel is intended to include legislation that affects more than just England :

"10h ago14:54
Sir Edward Leigh, a Conservative, says the SNP has been good about not voting on England-only matters. If the plans were amended so matters with Barnett consequentials did not count as England-only, would the SNP support them, he asks. He says he is minded to support this idea, because it would strengthen the union.

Wishart says the SNP would be tempted to back that idea."
