Remembrance Day Ceremony

This is to be cut short because of the age of the Queen and other Veterans. Fair enough! They are getting on a bit...BUT why should only David Cameron have the right to lay a wreath as a Government Official? Don't know about you but I take exception to this in the Year of the Somme. The majority of dead and injured were from the working class so why do we deny other parties more representative of that group the right to lay the wreath? By all means make life easier for her Majesty but let all parties be represented. It is important to me and I think a lot of other people who knew families whose men never came home. You were wrongly advised on this Your Majesty and should reverse the decision.

Thabk you nigglenellie, I did think I was allowed to post my opinions but your permission and approval means so much

NotTooOld Sat 24-Oct-15 18:28:59

Oh, honestly. What a fuss. They are shortening the ceremony at the Cenotaph (or not, I'm confused now) because the participants are getting on a bit and many cannot cope with standing around in the cold for ages. Sounds like common sense to me. Congraulations to whomever thought up the idea.

nigglynellie Sat 24-Oct-15 18:31:57

That is actually what I was saying Not To Old!! Hardly a right wing plot!!

Ana Sat 24-Oct-15 18:34:12

Everything's a right wing/royalist plot to some people...hmm

Elegran Sat 24-Oct-15 18:35:16

Ah, but some posters think that everything is a right-wing plot and an excuse for DC to get his ugly mug into the photo opportunities! (or for royalty to lord it over us all)

Elegran Sat 24-Oct-15 18:35:47

x posts, ana ! grin

Anniebach Sat 24-Oct-15 18:36:15

One participant is getting on a bit,

Ceesnan Sat 24-Oct-15 18:49:31

Anniebach do you really have so little respect for those who fought for their country? Shame on you.

Alea Sat 24-Oct-15 18:58:03

Why oh why has a perfectly reasonable topic descended into this level of bad tempered vituperative mudslinging??
Is it a case that we get grumpier as we get older or is it just that some people thrive on a ding dong?
It's worse than PMQs.

Anniebach Sat 24-Oct-15 19:00:23

Ceesan, the queen did not fight for our country, and I have only said the dead of the wars deserve one day in the year to have full respect, not a service cut short , where is my lack of respect?

Ana Sat 24-Oct-15 19:04:22

Has anyone any idea by exactly how much the service would have been 'cut short'? I doubt it would have been such that anyone (dead or alive) would have felt their day had been blighted.

The Remembrance Day service takes up only one part of the day, after all.

flowers Evening. We're just here to bring offerings of cake and wine hot chocolate. It's an emotive topic, but, if some of you could remember our lovely talk guidelines before hitting 'POST MESSAGE', we'd be eternally grateful.

nigglynellie Sat 24-Oct-15 19:12:17

The Queen was too young to fight in the war, her father too old. She did however join the AT S at 17, something a lot of young women, including my mother did during this period. Prince Phillip was a serving Officer on a fighting ship, Earl Mountbatten, again too old to fight, was heavily involved in the direction of the war, The Kings brother, The Duke of Kent was killed during the war. I don't think that's a bad war record for any family, and I think gives HM the right to attend this ceremony with pride.

Ceesnan Sat 24-Oct-15 19:14:25

The veterans survived, it is not a service for them, it is for the dead. That remark sounds completely dismissive to me. There were also a couple of other comments too, but as the posts have already been deleted I can't quote them. I would take issue too, with the remark about the day not being for the veterans - why do you think so many people stay long after the service to applaud as they march past?

Alea Sat 24-Oct-15 19:14:31

GNHQ. Why not winewine??
Is this a new austerity measure?
Hot chocolate is all very well for old dears.. . . . . . shock

Anniebach Sat 24-Oct-15 19:21:31

Ceesan, you explain what Remembrance Sunday means to you , to me it means remembering the dead of wars and conflicts

Ana Sat 24-Oct-15 19:23:31

So how would cutting a few minutes off the Service affect your ability to do that, Anniebach?

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 24-Oct-15 19:23:54

Ooh! You've been told off on this thread, and I haven't been reading it! shock grin

thatbags Sat 24-Oct-15 19:24:56

Walks onto the thread, looks around, thinks Good Grief, exits.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 24-Oct-15 19:25:26

I thought they've cut it short because the Queen and the veterans are knocking on a bit now. Quite understandable I would have thought.

Alygran Sat 24-Oct-15 19:28:02

Representatives of commonwealth countries lay their tributes in groups. I thought that the proposal was for politicians (and some members of the Royal Family?) to do the same. Really shocked that this could cause so much bad feeling?

Alea Sat 24-Oct-15 19:29:17

"Those who fell, those who fought, those who survived, the families of all ex servicemen and women, those who served in the ambulance or fire watching services" Where do you draw the line?
I think what we should be remembering is the readiness which those people showed in the face of danger, to make their country's service their priority.
Service is no longer a popular concept but when I see those frail old codgers (no disrespect!!) and think of their incredible bravery and resilience, I feel truly humbled.
It is a Service of Remembrance, some of us will remember family members who are no longer with us. Others, those who have to live with the legacy of fighting or imprisonment. Dies it matter? For this period, if for no other "We will remember them".

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 24-Oct-15 19:29:29

So, is it only the PM laying a wreath? Why can't they all walk up together and put their wreaths down?

Alea Sat 24-Oct-15 19:30:36

Oh fat finger syndrome
"Does it matter....?"

JulieGransnet (GNHQ) Sat 24-Oct-15 19:30:54

Not at all. I save the hot chocolate for the best people because I lace it with cherry brandy, swirly cream, a flake, mini marshmallows and small pieces of fudge. It's certainly not for 'old dears' shock

Alea
