We can all agree that regulations are a good thing.

Alea (I am personally very pleased and proud of the excellent BS standards which protect us all and especially our children (re toys, chemicals, electrical goods etc)
So am I but lately we seem to be getting a lot of Chinese imports that are substandard at one stage they seemed to be checked regularly makes me wonder if too many regulations have made too much for them to check all.
I have been trying to get a pair of sheets that are not produced in China so far no joy.

Gove is being interviewed by Robert Peston at the moment. He has made the point that some of the more reprehensible banking institutions, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan have given millions to the Remain campaign. Institutions who have been fined billions for dodgy practices.

I am still at a loss to understand this over regulation. From my perspective it is a fantasy concocted by the Mail/Express/Sun and those in favour of Leaving, by picking on trivia, or making or making them up (like Boris and the bunches of bananas) . I see only benefits to workers, to women, to health and to the environment.
The owners of the Mail/Express/Sun like the fact that they can influence UK governments and they would have a greater influence without the moderating effect of EU regulations. This,cited in the Independent recently:

Since firms like that are only out for what's in it for them, I am not at all surprised.

Anyone remember that story about the child who got burns on a Halloween because she was wearing some highly flammable dressing up costume which our wonderful "standards", whether British or EU, classified as toys instead of as clothes? Don't blame the Chinese.

Mind you, the real problem was that there were naked flames too near to where children would be and someone wasn't careful enough with candles. You can't really legislate against lack of safety awareness.

granjura I may be wrong in this but doesn't the reciprocal trade agreement between the Swiss and the EU refer only to trade and not free movement of people?

A British exporter interviewed on the radio said how easy it was for him to sell goods to EU countries compared to other countries and if we left there would be such an increase of red tape that his business would suffer badly.

If you compare BS, ISO, EU and ANSI product regulations, you will find them very similar as they all have the same objective, to protect the consumer from rouge manufactures.

BS and ISO have been very similar (if not identical in many areas) for many years.

Anyone who imports goods which do not have EC safety labels is at fault, not the fact that there are the labels.

If you buy from pound shops you are likely to be buying goods that are illegal, that break EC testing laws.

Trading standards regularly take the sellers to court and always get the illegal goods removed when they find them. This government has got rid of lots of trading standards officers by not giving the councils enough money to pay for their jobs.
Every year the number of trading standards officers is cut as councils try to save money. If you want the law to be enforced, do not vote for a government you know is not interested.

The only directives I can find on towels are about paper towels and the environment and using the EU ecolabel. Can't be bothered to count them.

sunseeker - no, the only way the Swiss could get a Trade Agreement was to agree to the free movement of people and the same EU standards for goods and produce exported as the EU - and that is a point I made several times recently. There is NO way the EU will agree to a reciprocal agreement with the UK and give in on this, I'm afraid- it would just be too unfair on other EU countries, surely.

This is not to trip anyone up as I don't know the answer in my region but does anyone know whether their area has a net benefit or loss from the EU or where we can find the facts regarding this?

The North East has net benefit. My MEPs tell me about it. If you know your MEP's website, look on that.

Re those who have changed their views: Owen Jones made it perfectly clear on Question Time that he sees Brexit as an opportunity for this right-wing government to destroy workers rights and fears for the future of the poor and vulnerable without protection. I would imagine Corbyn sees the same threat.

Jen we were probably watching the same programme as my TV is tuned to the North East (better signal) and I was too lazy to change it over Watching it made me realise I didn't know.
