British teachers telling children to consider themselves European

I'm an Out for all the reasons given already but yesterday a friend who'd been undecided called round. She said she's now come down for Out for a very simple reason. She's Scottish. Proud to be Scottish but has over the years come to now describe herself as British as required. She heard on the radio that teachers are no longer telling children to consider themselves British but as European. That was the final straw for her. Simple. The loss of identity and nationality.
I think it's becoming so all over Europe. The taking away of identity and lumping us all together

This is what NFKDumpling wrote on another thread.

I have asked NFK's permission to do this thread.

And, of course, though it shouldn't need pointing out, religion does not equal race. There are christians of all races and muslims of all races. People who assume all christians or all muslims are the same are the racist ones.

I am not sure that NoStrayGrey's post is talking about Muslims.
She says they were told that the family came from a long way away, so that could be any number of countries, religions and gods.

Quite, obi.

Alea Mon 06-Jun-16 09:10:42

She could be very old and talking about Huguenots in the East End of London, Jews likewise, Chinese in the Limehouse area, West Indians fresh off the Windrush, Bangladeshis in Brick Lane, Scots steelworkers in Corby, Ugandan Asians or indeed any of the waves of immigrants/migrants who have enriched our society. hmm

And, the important thing is that, for the purposes of this thread their politico/religious identity doesn't matter! This could be why it wasn't mentioned hmm

What matters is WHAT THEY SAID, i.e. their unpleasant and unfriendly attitude.

Anniebach Mon 06-Jun-16 09:32:20

But this family had a different God, not Gods but God. and they intended to take control of this country etc . This is UKIP on top form

thatbags Mon 06-Jun-16 09:36:21

"their gods" could be interpreted that way, I suppose, ab. But, to reiterate, their politico-religious "identity" is not important. What's important is their unacceptable behaviour. And pointing out their unacceptable behaviour (which is what nostray did) is not racist.

Anniebach Mon 06-Jun-16 09:41:11

Gods as in .hindu faith. Pagan faith

God as in Jewish, Christian, Muslim faith.

I suppose the poster is a very, very, very young grandparent

trisher Mon 06-Jun-16 09:42:26

Trying to remember what if anything I regarded myself as when I was a child. All I can recall is the thing I used to write inside any books/belongings-
Name and address
town
county
England
Great Britain
Europe
The World
The Solar System
The Universe
Must admit I copied it from big brother, but maybe it did influence my thinking.

thatbags Mon 06-Jun-16 09:43:41

Or "gods" as in what one believes in, whether they are actual gods or just strong beliefs in something or other. I thought you meant it in a non-religious way when you mentioned Ukip.

thatbags Mon 06-Jun-16 09:44:18

I did that too, trisher smile

Anniebach Mon 06-Jun-16 09:44:55

I remember writing the very same Trisher, well not England but the rest

Daisymay44 Mon 06-Jun-16 09:59:01

Can't be bothered to read all these xenophobic statements, but referring to the title - for crying out loud we ARE European - not American, not African, not Chinese!!! Get a grip and just vote whichever way you fancy. This us one irreversabke decision we should not be voting about - NO ONE knows for sure what conseqences either outcome will have.

obieone Mon 06-Jun-16 10:06:38

The op is about losing the British. I could have put that in the title.
I dont think there are that many people who want to lose being British.

varian Mon 06-Jun-16 10:14:01

Daisymay - I totally agree with you that we should never have been asked to make this decision - the only reason for having the referendum was to appease UKIP and sections of the Tory party.

Obieone - Why should we ever stop being British although we are also European?

Firecracker123 Mon 06-Jun-16 10:27:10

A lot of people voted Conservative at the last election because of the promise of an EU Referendum. How arrogant some people are to suggest the British people should not have a say on how and who we want to govern us.

I suppose if you have family on the EU gravy train you wouldn't want it to end.

daphnedill Mon 06-Jun-16 10:36:18

How many people do you think are on the EU gravy train?

Anniebach Mon 06-Jun-16 10:41:12

How can a British person lose being British? This really puzzles me

Neversaydie Mon 06-Jun-16 10:42:53

I am Welsh and proud to be so but I also consider myself a citizen of the world (if that doesn't sound pretentious).People world wide (and I have travellled quite extensively) have in my experience more in common than they have differences .

obieone Mon 06-Jun-16 11:01:22

Ab. You are always seperating out the welsh bit from the UK.[I am not going to get into several posts with you, if you take issue with a word or two]. Even your name is welsh. You are quite entitled to it. You cling on to being welsh. You protect it.

Christalbee Mon 06-Jun-16 11:12:14

I don't think there is anything wrong with this, as long as it is in the right context. We are first and foremost, English, Scots or Welsh, then we are Europeans. Probably confusing for the children, depending on how young or old they are!

daphnedill Mon 06-Jun-16 11:14:25

Was this anything to do with Europe Day on 2 May?

Anniebach Mon 06-Jun-16 11:16:53

Obieone, no more than you separate English, even my name is Welsh ? How kind of you to say I am entitled to it. Puzzled that Annie is considered a Welsh name though

I asked how a British person could lose being British, do explain please

Anniebach Mon 06-Jun-16 11:20:41

Obieone, I am female, was born female, do not cling to being female , I am female

I was born in Wales of Welsh parents , I do not cling to being Welsh, I am Welsh , it's that simple

Lupatria Mon 06-Jun-16 11:28:52

i'm english - i was born in england and live in england and, presumably when the time comes, i'll die in england.
i sometimes have to tick british on a form but i'm not given any choice.
and i'm absolutely fed up to the back teeth with everything to do with the referendum - the IN people claim one thing and the OUT people another - for goodness sake, no country has left the eu before so how on earth can we know what's going to happen.
for my part, i've already sent off my postal vote - and i've voted OUT - i voted LEAVE at the last referendum and never wanted to be a part of europe in the first place.
