Nobody shouted loud enough about the wonderful things that the EU did

Well, they had 50 years, and a 6 month lead up to the vote. If that wasnt enough time, then perhaps, just perhaps there were not enough wonderful things, or some of it just wasn.t wonderful at all. No excuse really.

durhamjen Tue 23-Aug-16 20:17:56

A washing machine not efficient of somebody's time?
You mean she stands there over it and waits for it to finish?

People did shout loudly enough about the EU. There's none so deaf as those who do not want to hear.
Strangely enough, the main newspaper proprietors wanted us to leave, so they did not tell people about all the things we were going to lose, and when they did, called it project fear.
Boris was a consumate liar and fantasist as far as the EU was concerned, even when his job was writing about the EU from Brussels.

daphnedill Tue 23-Aug-16 20:31:38

I seem to remember there was a professor from Liverpool, who warned that leaving the EU would be a complicated and long drawn-out process. His YouTube video had over 4 million hits, but you weren't one of them, obieone. You claimed that you didn't have enough time to spare a few minutes to find out some facts about the most important political vote you'll probably ever make.

About the child refugees in Calais, a petition to ask May to allow 300 into the country before the start of the new school term. As she stressed her ideas of social justice, it'll get her a bit of kudos.

It's to do with physics nigglynellie.
Imagine 2 cars. One has a great big 3 L engine and gets to it's destination very quickly, travelling at 85mph.
The other car has the same body but has a smaller 1.5 L engine and goes more slowly at 60 mph but it still reaches its destination. They have travelled the same distance and carried the same amount of "work" but the one with the 3L engine has used much more the fuel that the other one. Therefore the small car is a more efficient way of getting from A to B (but slower).
It's 'energy efficiency' that is being regulated to reduce your fuel bill and reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to make the electricity.
Personally I find that most washing machines have perfectly adequate short cycles.
Well quite Jalima or maybe we will see powerful lobbyists successfully pushing governments into allowing things like dosing cattle with hormones to make them grow faster.

Jalima Tue 23-Aug-16 20:52:09

djen grin but if you have three or four or five loads to do, you don't want to be doing one each evening to hang out the next morning; I like to get it over and done with on one day (perhaps another load or two later in the week) then get it out on the line. I know she doesn't have to stand over it, but even starting at 6.30 am would take all day if the loads each take three hours, stop what you're doing, hang it out, back to doing whatever it was.
It's back to the old days when washing was hanging around all day Monday!

durhamjen Tue 23-Aug-16 21:58:08

I sometimes have two loads, particularly when I have to wait for a sunny day, as my drier has stopped drying.
It still doesn't impinge on my time, though.

nigglynellie Tue 23-Aug-16 22:09:13

It's ok if there is only one or two of you in family, but DD who has a hubby and three young children, sometimes feels that the machine is on all day as each load takes for ever! Frustrating when you also work full time and all you want is to get through household chores as quickly as possible.

durhamjen Tue 23-Aug-16 22:52:37

Nothing to do with it, though.
My machine has a programme that takes three hours. It also has one that takes less than an hour. That's the one I use.
I do not know of a machine that only has an eco cycle.
My son's family go running, four of them at least every other day, so they have lots of clothes to wash.
You put it on and you leave it to do something else.

daphnedill Tue 23-Aug-16 23:03:29

My washing machine is 'eco', but it also has a quick wash cycle, which I use if I'm in a hurry and things are only lightly soiled. When I moved to this house, the landlord had replaced all the bulbs with LED ones and all my kitchen appliances were eco-efficient. The washing machine annoyed me a bit, because I was used to a much quicker wash, but now it doesn't usually bother me, especially since I discovered the quick wash. I also have a low(ish) wattage vacuum cleaner, which is just as good as my old one.

I've been here two years and I really have noticed how low my electricity bills are in comparison with my old house, which was only a bit bigger.

daphnedill Tue 23-Aug-16 23:04:51

I agree with you, dj. My machine is the same.

obieone Tue 23-Aug-16 23:07:34

dd, correct. A good decision. I havent watched it since either! Another good decision.

daphnedill Tue 23-Aug-16 23:07:50

I'm sitting here remembering my first washing machine, which was a second hand twin tub. I really did have to spend half a day watching over the wretched thing to do the washing.

When I finally bought an automatic, I still sat there watching the thing, because I was so fascinated that this machine could make my life so much easier.

Life moves on!

obieone Tue 23-Aug-16 23:09:01

For anyone who was undecided, I doubt he managed to persuade anyone.

obieone Tue 23-Aug-16 23:11:33

Just had a thought! He is related to someone on gransnet isn't he? shock

Jalima Tue 23-Aug-16 23:13:32

This is a new machine.

Mine is about 5 years old, has a very quick wash for lightly soiled items but the next quickest one with the highest rpm (which I generally use) takes about 1 hour 50 minutes.
I don't sit and watch it but I do shout at it from time to time.

durhamjen Tue 23-Aug-16 23:22:06

My first was a copper in the corner of the kitchen; fill it with cold water and put hot coals underneath. We only had a cold tap, and one electric point in the whole house!

We've moved on since then.

Jalima Tue 23-Aug-16 23:32:39

I think the old dolly tub and mangle was quicker than some modern machines, and more eco-friendly!

sorry ww, getting off the beaten track

durhamjen Tue 23-Aug-16 23:51:05

Problem is she wasn't here for long enough before they all went on holiday.

Liz Truss wants to get rid of the Human Rights Act and replace it with a British Bill of Rights. Why?

Hunt is getting into real trouble with the NHS. He knew that before he was given the job back. Probably the rest suspected something which is why nobody wanted to take over.

JessM Wed 24-Aug-16 07:21:20

My machine is 2 years old and has a 39 minute cycle which is perfectly adequate for most jobs. Unless you have a family of rugby or soccer players how often do you have a heavily soiled wash these days?
It's quite normal these days to have clean clothes every day, sometimes twice a day if people change in the evening.

JessM Wed 24-Aug-16 07:25:58

durhamjen Hunt and Cameron cooked up the 7 day manifesto pledge without much thought. The thought they would lose the election so why bother thinking it through? They are also choosing, determinedly, to ignore further statistical advice that the "weekend effect" should not be taken on face value and treated in a simplistic manner.

Long but interesting article about different types of Brexit and the problems they would cause.
