www.thetimes.co.uk/article/firms-must-list-foreign-workers-gw20ndp5x

Saw this report this am and my blood ran cold. Is this - lists of all foreigners - not the beginning of a very slippery slope which leads to yellow stars sewn on to clothing?

I'm wondering what constitutes a 'FOREIGNER'? Surely not my very good French born Scottish friend who has lived, worked, been married in the UK for nearly 50 years? Or the 3rd generation Asian Scots who run our local convenience store? Or the music teacher who coaches the Wee Community steel band - she's from the USA (and one of the drummers is (shock horror) German. Or the Syrian and Polish families now at school with my DGC. What about DH's Consultants? The last one was from New Zealand, the Current one is, I think, Indian. Will the Houses of Parliament have to list all the MPs and Lords who were born elsewhere.

Am I the only one to hear alarm bells ringing in my ears more loudly than usual? Have we reached a tipping point, where rampant British Nationalism is the only mantra?

I thînk people are getting their knickers in a twist over the schools asking for information. I've worked in a school office for about 15 years and we have always asked for this information. We get some extra funding for having a large number of EAL children in our area (don't know if all schools get this) so it can make a positive difference to the school budget. The only new thing is asking for country of birth. Schools have to see children's birth certificates anyway (we have had people trying to sneak in an underage pupil in the past!) so it is evident from that where they were born. In any case, a high percentage of the children who class their nationality as other than UK were actually born here.

Hooty, one problem is that nationality keeps getting changed by various governments.
It depended up until now on where your mother was born. My grandson, born in York, had to get a Danish passport because his parents were not married and his mother is Danish. The rules changed before his sister was born. She has a British passport.
Now they have changed again, and the next time he needs one, he can get a British one, unless it changes again because of all this paranoia about foreigners.

trisher Sun 09-Oct-16 11:36:24

This isn't an 'ask' Hooty this is a legal requirement which is proposed. With an 'ask' you can always refuse. And it isn't schools or anything to do with funding it is companies.

If the parents had been married would the child have taken his father nationality?

Jalima Sun 09-Oct-16 12:50:36

I thought Denmark had changed the rules now and that he would be entitled to dual nationality now durhamjen

durhamjen Sun 09-Oct-16 13:16:51

If you were born before July 2006, your father’s British nationality will normally only pass to you if he was married to your mother at the time of your birth.

Relevant bit, Jalima.

Jalima Sun 09-Oct-16 14:32:22

Ah, right.
I wonder why there is a distinction between pre and post 2006
Seems daft

durhamjen Sun 09-Oct-16 14:39:09

I suppose because that's when they changed it, and didn't think about retrospective.
Grandson born 2002, his sister born 2007, hence the difference.

Jalima Sun 09-Oct-16 14:57:14

Misunderstanding, I thought it was Denmark's rules about dual nationality - I know they have recently changed.

durhamjen Sun 09-Oct-16 15:04:58

Yes, Denmark changed last year. However, you have to be Danish speaking and living in Denmark to get Danish nationality, I think. You can't apply for it if you live here.
Interesting, that. My grandson can keep his EU nationality, but the other grandchildren can't. Other two quarter Norwegian and American, but born in UK.

durhamjen Sun 09-Oct-16 15:47:35

Government seen sense very quickly on this one.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/oct/09/plan-to-force-firms-to-reveal-foreign-staff-numbers-abandoned

I can give them a list of other things to change tack on, NHS, Welfare bill, spare room tax........

rosesarered Sun 09-Oct-16 17:39:21

Not happening now and was only being thought if 'in consultation' in the first place.

Ana Sun 09-Oct-16 17:41:49

But let's not that get in the way of a good Shock Horror thread...

Ana Sun 09-Oct-16 17:42:42

missed a 'let' out there - thought it looked odd!

rosesarered Sun 09-Oct-16 17:46:58

Yes, Ana there are a lot of 'outraged from Orpington' on here, when nothing was definite anyway.

trisher Sun 09-Oct-16 17:51:08

It is happening, the data just won't be published. I'm not sure if that is better or not. I believe in freedom of information and if only the government know something I find it really disturbing.

Eloethan Sun 09-Oct-16 17:51:27

"outraged from Orpington"?

petra Sun 09-Oct-16 18:02:41

Roses ' outraged of Orpington' was that Kenny Everett? grin

durhamjen Sun 09-Oct-16 18:25:29

Nearly 250 posts on something that wasn't going to happen, eh?
Why didn't you tell us earlier; it would have saved a lot of aggravation.
It took four days for Amber Rudd to realise that. You could have told her it wasn't going to happen, too.

whitewave Sun 09-Oct-16 18:32:45

They tested the water, hoping for a positive vibe, realised the reaction and scuttled back to think again. Not easy this immigrant problem is it? Well it isn't if you don't approach it with sense and honesty.

Ana Sun 09-Oct-16 18:32:50

If you hadn't posted that link, the thread could have gone on for a lot longer...Spoilsport!

trisher Sun 09-Oct-16 18:34:43

It is happening, just not publicly
Justine Greening, the education secretary, announced on Sunday that companies will not be made to publish the data as suggested by the home secretary, Amber Rudd, during the Conservative party conference.

She said the information would be confidential and instead used by the government to identify skills shortages, rather than to “name and shame” businesses that rely on foreign employees.

durhamjen Sun 09-Oct-16 18:38:09

Has anyone seen Amber Rudd on television today?

Everyone else seems to be saying she was wrong, but I haven't seen her.

obieone Sun 09-Oct-16 19:15:07

The data will still be collected.

Cant see that much difference really between publishing and not publishing.

grannypiper Sun 09-Oct-16 19:48:20

what about 4th generation greek/scot and 2nd generation russian/english with ahild born in northen ireland ? yikes
