Brexit and power to the people

Really interesting court case and day 1 of "The Royal Prerogative"

It basically boils down to whether a minister -in this case Amino 1 - can remove rights established by an act of parliament.

It raises questions of "fundamental constitutional importance about the limits of the power of the executive"

Pannick, QC for the challenger, said " this court is not concerned with the political wisdom of withdrawal" "The government was wrong to suggest the legal challenge was merely camouflage to prevent Brexit"

Pannick's client the court was advised had again received threats, abuse and insults.

A further QC - representing the people
Argued" the constitution of our parliamentary democracy, unwritten as it is , is predicated on the sovereignty of parliament and the courts working as arbiter. Notification of withdrawal leads to the removal of the rights of UK citizens.
Chambers QC argued that the referendum did not replace the UK system of parliamentary democracy"
If the government triggered A50 it would be setting itself up as "de facto legislature"
This is a case about what is legally required, not what is legally expedient.

Good ain't it?

What an odd rebuff to Ana durhamjen when you have put up a link up again to left wing Tom Pride who gives the impression he must have spoken to 'everyone he knows', apparently everybody who voted in the EU Referendum to make yet another sweeping statement based on nowt, Nada, zilch. He obviously doesn't have ' better things to talk about ' if that is the point you are making to Ana.

He never asked me either!.

If he had he might have found out this Remainer is so peed off with the attitude of some other Remainers I just might vote to Leave next time, if there ever is a next time.

Just how such material is given credence bemuses me.

There's a reason why TomPride calls itself an irreverent look at UK politics, POGS. You obviously take him, and me, too seriously.
Lighten up!

Maybe you just don't live in the right place to be asked.

Or maybe you just don't look at the right websites to respond to the questions.
Along, of course, with everyone you know.

Maybe you just spend too much time on GN.

There is a difference between irreverence and downright lies though.
It is often trotted out that loads of people who voted Leave now regret it ( I mean WHY? Nothing has changed as yet.) All the people we know who voted Leave are still happy about it, but not happy that the government of the day is being challenged every which way by Uncle Tom Cobbley and All, so that their job is being made all that harder to secure a good deal for the UK.

Actually djen two points here, one that you cannot put too much faith in opinion polls any more, and two, that nobody spends more time on Gransnet than yourself.

There must be people also who voted Remain but are thinking - perhaps I was wrong and the right decision was made after all.

Maybe you just spend too much time on GN.
I often think that about myself, I must go and do something more productive!

Oh dear durhamjen yes left wing Tom Pride is happy to state he/them ' take an irreverent look at UK Politics'. Tom Pride/Prides Purge, also states he/they are :-

"Sarcastic, cynical, petty, vindictive and paranoid.
But apart from that ………"

Obviously some posters like to promote his/their work.

As for taking you seriously many posters do and like your links . Fair enough but if you are being ironic or joking then why come back at posters in the manner you do.

durhamjen Mon 12-Dec-16 15:39:32

That's why it's in the cynicism category, roses. You just don't get it, do you?
As for me spending more time on here than anyone else....what?
Don't be ridiculous.
