Well, both situations in both countries can be compared, although they are not 'comparable'. Both referendums (di) were won for the same reasons, and by the same 'categories' of people. As you say, Switzerland has never been part of the EU and has had agreements which were similar, and yet different, to those within the EU. And had it not been for Brexit- it propably would have been able to 'discreetly' get an agreement on some form of limitation to EU free movement (a third of Swiss inhabitants are immigrants- and a lot more are of Italian,Spanish, Portuguese, Kosovo origins now naturalised) - but just as those agreements were being put in place- they've all been cancelled due to Brexit. The EU knows that if they get some deal with Switzerland that allows them to limit free movement, it will set a precedent for the UK, and possibly others.
