I didn't live in London but there were signs like that in windows in Hull. However, my parents were more enlightened, and I was brought up with various immigrants living in the house, right until I left home. That was through the fifties and sixties.

But not 'NO DOGS NO BLACKS NO IRISH' ? Which I think ( excuse the pun) was a bone of contention.
Certainly there were notices about the two ethnic groups.

However, we had black students, Irish students, Asian students, my parents didn't care. Black doctors I remember very well,pushing me on my swing in the back garden before I was old enough to start school.
Never met a black Irish student, though.

Roses, it would be good if Annie could be pleased that a Labour councillor won a seat instead of a UKIP one. That would be asking too much of her.

Jen you are great at posting blogs but your knowledge of genuine party support is rock bottom and still drilling, I am not knocking Lsbour I sm sharing my fears of it's decline whilst. UKIP is on the up.

The no Blacks, no dogs etc signs,were in most cities in the sixties. I went in a pub with my partner in sbout 1964 eho was black SA, we are asked to sit in a back room, and no the pub was not crowded. Friends of mine from St Kitts tried to buy a house, they viewed and every time they arrived back at the estate agent the house was either sold or taken off the market.

AB and DJ why do I keep getting an irresistible urge to knock both your heads together sometimes and remind you that the things that unite you are much more important than the things that divide you. Neither of you are the enemy to each other in any meaningful sense - at least not whilst Mair's posts are reminding us of the real enemy within

Rigby ,sadly you are mistaken, there is no greater devide in the Labour Party than a member who wants a labour government and a member who wants to support a leader who is determined to destroy the Labour Party.

Clearly not, or you would have been well aware of the sterling work done by Gurdip and his many colleagues and that of other members of the Asian community during that time. It's sad that you felt impelled to make such a sweeping and unfounded comment about the Asian residents of the Borough.

Just seen the title of this thread. Who is the leader of UKIP these days? Is it one of the funny (strange) little men they seem to attract or are they still playing the women card?

Paul Nuttall. MEP. Dodgy character. Known for lying. e.g. about having a Phd and being a professional footballer. Currently in trouble for allegedly funnelling his EU allowances (the money he gets for running an office etc) into UKIP. Against the rules. Trying to get elected to parliament in the Stoke by-election.

I am still not clear who counts as "native British"in your anecdotal schools survey. How many generations back do we have to go? What about mixed race kids( the largest growing group)? What about me with my Irish grandparents? What survey have you done to establish your claims? You don't actually live in inner London and you claim to know the racial and ethnic identity of all the kids. Does it matter anyway? if someone's family have been here 2, 3 or 4 generations I would say they were British " Native" British has no meaning, though I suspect you mean pure white. I trust there are only native British at your local NHS hospital. I despair of the racist tone here. Sorry to divert from the highly attractive individual that is P Nuttall, but I am sure Mair shares his views.

The irony is that it's was a completely unnecessary lie.
The law says that candidates have to put their full address on the form. Lots of candidates don't have a local address at this stage. But he lied.

I would have thought Nuttall would know that, as he's stood in four elections before. He was just trying to be clever. Instead he's probably scuppered his chances. He can't be after the homeless vote, because they don't have a vote, but it certainly looks like that, sleeping on a mattress on the floor.

My take on it was that PN wanted a constituency address because with that on the ballot paper he would present himself as a local who really cared enough about them to live amongst them - aahh bless

Seems ridiculously harsh given Ed and Yvette Balls escaped gaol for
'flipping' homes three times to maximise expenses as well as claiming first class fares for the entire family of five spending their weekends in the constituency.

As IF a family with three young kids chooses the train over the family car for such a trip.

And the relevance of that is what?
Shall we start on moats and duck houses next? Or even stick to the thread topic?
